  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another year of the Blues, no Red Scarlet yet.

I don't think that anyone is saying that the Scarlet is behind with regards to the tech that it has in it, more the fact that RED constantly makes statements about release dates and "big announcements" and then fails to ever follow through. No one is saying that if this camera ever materialises, it won't be years ahead of anything in its price range, but until that time, maybe it's better to keep quiet and surprise the world.

It's kinda like going into a gourmet restaurant that promises to have your food freshly cooked from RAW (haha) in 10 minutes. You'd think "wow that's amazing, I wonder how they do that." 40 minutes later, your gourmet dinner arrives and it's all that you expected it to be... But it was 30 minutes later than they had advertised. Fact is, they didn't do what they set out to do. When you complain about the time it took, the waiter points to the bottom of the menu where it states 'everything is subject to change.'

All well and good telling RED that whatever they do (missing deadlines, not coming through on announcements, increasing the price again and again) it's the right choice, but some of us actually take what Jim say seriously, budget ourselves with his words in mind and schedule buying into new tech based on what he has previously stated.

Just my opinion :)

+1 :iagree:

It was RED's biggest mistake in history to release any information
about a new cam called "Scarlet" or "Epic".

RED just speed up the development at Panasonic or Sony. Now,
both released their new products, and RED get rid off a lot of
potential customers. It's a pitty that RED did not catch the bus.
They tried to hold customers with empty promises.

RED was a kind of a new star... but now they turned into a supernova. :violin:

Even this forum here is like a "dreaming platform", talking technical
stuff about rigs and accessories for a cam, which will not be available
for a long, lomg time. Waste of time. :frown2:

There is this saying: Talk is silver, silence is golden.

George,

But the scarlet was not announced with the Red one, but after and years ago. :)

People go on about this delivery issue, but I would have been happy with a simpler camera with less codec quality, but 4K. It is just that Red tried to do so much more that it is delayed, good for you guys, not so good for me. If Jim had gone for my idea of a $1000 quality camera that would also be sold onto the mass market as luxury/prosumer video camera with cine like image, to reduce price, the Sony and Panasonic competition could seriously been comprised by now. Just one more competitive strategy on top of this... As it is they have enough room to survive the Red onslaught, people will still, presumably, buy Sony and Panasonic, because it has Sony or Panasonic on it, their service and support and is "good enough".

Do you really think RED is trying to drive Panasonic and/or Sony and/or JVC etc, out of the camera business?? Show me a market where one company meets everyone's needs. Jim has made it clear that he is in business to serve professionals. Something tells me that a $1000 camera doesn't fit into that business model, at least not yet. I think Jim wants to build the cameras that HE would want to use himself and that he can feel proud selling to others. He has said many times that the reason he went into this business is because all those other companies weren't producing those cameras. I seriously doubt he is delusional enough to give even a passing thought to how much he is "hurting" Panasonic, et al. He is not trying to "beat" them, he is trying to serve his target customer the best way he can.

I still believe in RED company those other companies have billions of dollars be hide them... this company is starting from the ground up...every company start off slow.... If red decided to just stop making cameras and say F**k it we would all be looking stupid and wanting them to come back and try once more and we would be back in the same boat wishing and waiting.... every good thing in life take time...three years or five year will still getting a good deal on the product.... and if you have not got a camera but now because you have been waiting that sound like it your problem not red... go rent something (RED 1) and make magic or canon or any thing that take pictures.

it is not what tool you have it is how you use it

look at this Sh*t and say it is not amazing your lying to your self

.

I still have a print out of the original Nov 14th 2008 announcement of the Epic/Scarlet modular camera systems. That was when they first announced they were going to develop them. A two year development cycle is pretty fast track for such an ambitious project.

AF100 has also been in development for nearly two years. Panasonic just didn't tell you anything about it. Unlike Red they also didn't ask potential customers what features they would like to see on the camera. Also unlike Red there is no fundamentally new technology embodied in the AF100. It is basically a repackage job with some tweeks.

Real engineering innovation doesn't conform to predictable schedules.

If you have to have a camera now, obviously you will have to pick something else. Some of us can afford to wait and continue to do so because we are fundamentally unsatisfied with the status quo long GOP compressed HD video cameras that are currently available or coming from the big guys in the near future.

Being that I spend time on DVXUser and you obviously don't, I can tell you that yes, Panasonic DID ask the end users what they wanted in the AF-100 and 90% of those features are in the shipping camera.

Before they began development, or after it was 75% complete and announced last summer?
I have followed the threads on DVXuser (Razz16mm). Seems to me they haven't added or changed anything that would significantly improve image quality or take it out of its target market price. Like 10 bit HDSDI output or P2 recording with a true intraframe codec.

After RED floated the 3k for $3k handicam concept at NAB 2008 they asked for and got 6 months of input from current Red owners and potential customers. The entire shift to a broader range modular camera system approach resulted from all of that input. The original concept didn't get developed at all because in many respects it was not what most potential buyers wanted.

To hit their target market, no you couldn't have those features for $4795.

Perhaps in what comes next (AF-200?) But that will most likely cost what a Sony F3 now goes for.

Cute concept, interesting music video. But the image quality is crap. Looks like it was shot with an iPhone.

it was lol but it showed the skills they have with no matter what they have in their hands lol but i guess it do not make a different bring the epic / scarlet out lol who i am i fooling

Some of you should have asked for RAW, a larger sensor and a whole bunch of other stuff...

Or just RAW, for that matter. Well, maybe 3K as well... modular would be nice... and HDRx?

Awww... never mind.

This was not a sad year at all !!!
A lot of new tools on the new cameras and Epics shipping already.
I'd say it was an awesome year !
And people should ask Sony's president for Raw and 4k. Oh wait, is he online talking to people now ? Or ever ? Give it a rest guys, when the cameras are out it's gonna be heaven.

If I want RAW and all the other good stuff, I'll just rent a RED, and I have;

Not every production or budget requires it.

Right tool for the job and all of that.

Just because you have a hammer doesn't mean that every production is a nail.

Perfection is relative to purpose.
If the purpose is your own artistic vision, which photographic palette would you choose if you could afford either?

Why?
For $5,000 it will do certain jobs.
I would prefer 2" VF and better codec..don't mind micro 4/3 CMOS...at least i can use Voigtlaender 25mm f0.95.

Couple of decent features were done on cameras with small sensors..........

Anyway-I am looking forward to EPIC-s.:blush5:

I feel like every thread like this one should be moved to the “Complaint Department” section where they can properly wither away and die. It seems to me that those that want to make fists and stamp and scream should be doing it in a nice padded section of the board designed for that.

I can afford both.

That is not the point, the point is wether or not it makes good business sense to buy a raw camera at this time.

With the few clients I have that specifically ask for it, I rent.

There are other things to consider than just pure "artistic vision".
