  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Roger Deakins' site shut down

Mr. Deakins' website is one of my default browser pages. I was sad to discover he had shut it down for the reason noted by his webmaster:

"Thanks to the vindictive and abusive behavior of one individual, we've decided to shut down this site.

This was a hard decision for Roger since he has put alot into this site. However, the abuse and the threats were taking away from the goals of the site and it was just too much. In the end, we were just providing an arena for this abusive behavior and who needs to see that? "

Mr. Deakins maintained a forum on his site as well as graciously posting some of his notes and lighting diagrams from recent projects. I wrote the webmaster, requesting that Mr. Deakins publish his wonderful notes and commentary and forgo a forum environment inviting feedback from anonymous, ungrateful wretches. It is a terrible thing when an entire community must suffer for the actions of one.

You might consider doing same at rogerdeakins.com

Michael, I felt and responded the same way you did (before you posted this). Hopefully enough of us will write and at least get some closure.....a real shame...i wonder who the asshole was
 
Opinionated cowards seem to come out of the woodwork on the Internet. Things you wouldn't dare say to a stranger on the street seem to be easily said online.

It is possible to permanently block people from a website. If Deakins webmaster could find out what IP addresses the idiot posts from, he could ban those from the server. It's quite easy. Even if he had to ban an entire IP block, it is better than taking such a useful resource away from everybody!

It is also easy enough to make comments or a message board for members only.
 
Just saw this too...what an invaluable source that was. There are too many lowlife idiots out there to let the world have good things.
 
What a great and generous way of Roger Deakins to share his knowledge on his site!
Its really sad to see in about every forum those disrespectful individuals who like nothing else then destroying one thread after the other. Sick egos!
Very sad we loose such a great site of such a great artist because of one f############

Does anyone know the story behind this? I didn't go on his forum regularly, only when I saw links to it. Was there someone continually trolling there?

It seems that some guy started hounding Deakins and the webmaster after a disagreement about whether Deakins had used a certain tripod head.
 
Let us not forget that some people are simply mentally unstable and not to be blamed, entirely, for their loss of perspective. Thus seems to be the case with this person.

That is incredibly sad. As Roger went out of his way to help and give advice - Like our Mr Mullen. Guess he/she really just completely lost the plot after the whole tripod head thing - hope no-one got physically harmed because of this...I would imagine they went on a rampage after that. Don't think a foam baseball bat would have the desired effect in that situation...Maybe four rolls of rubber wallpaper and a frontal labotomy!!
 
Mr. Deakins is a true master of his craft and what has transpired is a shame. Extremists on these types of sites make it difficult for everyone. I seem to remember another famous cinematographer who had had enough... never mind.

Just out of interest - did they have a real name policy at deakins.com? I really hope he carries it on without the forum (I was never particularly interested in that part of it, much more interested to read his freely-shared lighting wisdom).

He/she went by the name 'kamerawhore' and had posted a few weeks back about his/her frustrations with breaking in to the film industry. The rant was very wordy, at times aggressive and showed a serious distaste for the professionals that this person felt were undeservedly in his way. A few folks empathized with him, offering some good advice. Roger chimed in to second that advice. It was a good post overall.

It was when this same person asked Roger about a tripod head, referring to a photo in a magazine. He insisted Roger used a certain brand...Roger insisted that wasn't the case. The person insisted it WAS the case, accusing Roger of not even looking at the picture he linked to. Roger INSISTED that he has never shot with that type of head. The person took this as a rude response and went on a bit of a rant. Someone responded, siding with Roger in some way and the poster went off. He posted a massive, hate filled vindictive response and copied and pasted it in every thread. He insulted both Roger and the people he felt were kissing his ass.

So I think the unusual thing is this person didn't seem to be some random troll. It was a genuine reader of the board that lost his shi*. Pretty messed. I don't even want to know what sort of emails he sent to Roger and the webmaster.

Still, really sucks the site is gone. One person ruins it for everyone. "

This could be a scoop if it turns out to be someone we know ( Someone of great notoriety ) behind this incident ... I would not be the least surprised if it was.

CameraWhore might just turn out to be the Rosebud of 2009.

I have my own ideas on retards like that (but I`ll keep them to myself) - and it definately sounds like "kamerawhore" was a nuthead. People like that don`t belong into human society. In no way!

This really deserves its own thread, but I don't want to attract too much unnecessary attention to it. I contacted someone very close to Roger regarding the site. The person explained that Roger obviously did not want to shut down the site, but because of threats of this poster and his apparent knowledge of Roger's daily routine, that Roger felt it was time to close down the site. Apparently the poster is just being harassing Roger. So two questions:

1. In terms of tech solutions, what can be done. Ban the IP address sure, but wouldn't he get around that when he uses another computer? Any other solutions.

2. Can we weed this guy out? Even with the site down and the guy being emotionally unstable and having information on Roger, this seems like an issue that needs to addressed.
