  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Quite sure the IS does work -- its in the Canon lenses; they just need to be powered (which they are) to work. The IS already works with the Birger system and I think Jarred mentioned they were enjoying the IS on tests they had been doing (I'm assuming they were using Canon lenses and not yet RED prototypes).

What I'm really wondering is will RED have a follow focus knob available and if so, when? Without the knob the lenses are of limited use because you're still stuck with tiny lens rotation.

Does RED have a follow focus for the Canon, Nikon, RED electronic mounts in the works? If so, can you get hard stops on it?

Regards,
P

I am really banking on the RED MOTE PRO, which has the follow focus dial. I hope it's not too far behind the Epic-X. I built my entire prime kit around that piece of gear. :) IE, all auto lenses rather than the Zeiss ZE.

If the body and sensor are the same, would it be possible to upgrade an Epic-S to full Epic by simply swapping out the CPU board somewhere down the line? It would be great if that kind of upgrade path was an eventual option.

By similar bundle, I assume you mean a camera around the same price with lenses but one that doesn't shoot RAW but rather an RGB compressed codec instead? And less frame rates? And a plastic body? And no HDR motion mode?

If you are happy with the F3's limitations, you should buy it. Just don't be disturbed when EPIC-S is released and you have already spent your money on something that doesn't have all you are looking for. What they are offering could certainly be "good enough" for some people...

Jim

Did sony actually put this camera out in a long gop format??? Are you kidding me. This confirms what Jim has always been saying. The alter what they have and try to pass it off. It's a ZU1 or what ever they are called with bigger sensor.

I'll look forward to my scarlets and epic. This sony will not even compare to a scarlet fixed.

Upgrade by selling your Epic S Brain and buying an Epic X Brain.

That looks very cool, but for regular focusing I think I would prefer a larger follow focus knob. Obviously, I haven't tried what they've got, but a large disc with provisions for hard stops would be excellent.

I should add, I've been surprised with how much I've used my Canon/Birger set up and with how well it has served me. It does not replace manual lenses and ff, but it has come in very, very handy in a lot of situations that a box of PL primes or big cine zoom just didn't make a lot of sense.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Wishing you good health and happiness for the year of Rabbit!
Question:
When my turn comes up for Epic X (which is around #1900) do I have option to ask for Epic M (of course with extra cost)?
Am I crazy? I guess I am but I like the idea of owning something special.

Join the nobody club. 3 years ago we were nobodies as well. Its a great club to be in...

Will there be an option to shoot over-cranked at a lower resolution like the Red One. Not sure I'll need over cranked at 5k but the ability to have it in some capacity would be nice, even if it was a 2k thing...

How is 1080p going to be handled in-camera?

For at least the first years I don't see myself shooting 5K for anything but theatrical films or television.

For corporate jobs, etc, 1080p is going to be enough.

Is there a "1080p RAW" option?

The EPIC-S should be able to shoot 5K at 50fps or 60fps (The EPIC-X can shoot 5K at 120fps).
According to Jim, the EPIC-S should have about 1/2 the power of an EPIC-X).

If you need more fps than that you can shoot 4K, 3K or 2K.

I don't know about the 1080P option, but there will be an 2K option.

There is some form of 1080p RGB output among the listed features for these cameras. We don't know the specific details or file formats for that yet.
By definition it will not be RAW. It will be deBayered and scaled from full frame in camera, similar to what the Alexa does.
For quick turn video jobs one can also record to an external deck through a monitor port with a preset LUT and clean feed to whatever format you choose.
