  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will the Scarlets have the same black shading problems as the Epic?

Wondering if someone with a scarlet can do a test. Apparently a friend of mine, and Epic owner (Hi, Rick) has found a pretty serious problem with his Epic, only to be told it's extremely common. Since the sensors are the same in both cameras, it could be something that the scarlet has too.

So apparently all EPIC cameras have this gradient issue. If you have an Epic, here's a test for you.. Put the lens cap on.. Turn on FALSE COLOR... Crank up the ISO past 800 and watch the gradient appear... A black shade will resolve the issue only for it to return the next morning... Epic owners, try it out

Can someone check this out? Here's his thread:

Edit on 2/2/12:

I've been so busy enjoying shooting with my Scarlet, I totally forgot about this thread.

I put the lens cap on, cranked the iso up, and everything looks great. For the first 1 minute or so, there was a slight gradation from left to right, but after it all warmed up I don't see it. Took the file into Cine-x Pro and tried really hard to get bad results and all was good.

The Epic has a much more complicated internal engine than the Scarlet, so my guess would be no. But even if it does, I'm sure they will fix it through a firmware update.

Sounds like a very simple (and important) test for an issue we should all be aware of. I don't disagree that the epic is a more complex camera, but this is a problem a $5k camera should not have, forget a $35k camera.

Can someone with a scarlet do this test and post the results?

I don't really think this is a problem.

It is pretty well known that the EPIC needs regular black shading. Whenever framerates are changed, firmware updates, and big ambient temp changes.

I expect Scarlet to be the same, but perhaps less apparent because it can't make such drastic changes in framerates.

Read his thread. He isn't talking about black shading as a routine thing. He's talking about repeated black shading not doing what it's supposed to do and crippling a production 30 minutes at a time. RED also must have thought something was wrong as they had him send in his camera, only to tell him his problem isn't a problem.

That sounds like a problem to me.

That statement is not accurate.

NICK

My apologies, Nick. I'm going off 2nd hand info here, and that's just how I read it. If someone from RED has more info on this, I'd really appreciate hearing it as this is an issue that concerns me.

I've been shooting for about 5 days with the Scarlet X and haven't seen this. I'll do some testing tonight though.

Sergio, you have my email address. Shoot me an email delineating the specific issue(s) you are experiencing. A log file and single frame R3D will also assist with troubleshooting.

NICK

i most certainly will Nick...Have a great New Year. Talk soon

Ben, for someone who doesn't even own a Scarlet yet, you seem intent in turning this thread into Dead Horse Theater.:beatdeadhorse5:

I think we can safely say RED is aware by now, and probably trying to duplicate the problem in their lab.

Thanks for the not-very-useful comment, Elsie.

My goal isn't to bring this problem to red's attention; they obviously know about it. My goal is to see if this is also a problem with the current batch of scarlets (one of which I'll be receiving in a couple weeks).

O.K.

@Elsie: I tried to find the GIF of a smiley face pooping, but it's not listed anywhere. Let me know when you find it!

What!? :confused1:

lol

I was puzzled by that too.:confused1:

But to further explain, the OP says he is not expecting his Scarlet for a couple more weeks. IF there is a problem with the Scarlet, my guess is it will be fixed well before he gets his camera. There are probably 500+ Scarlets in the wild and this thread has been up for awhile now with no one reporting any black shading problems. It just seems a little patience is in order.
