  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will the Scarlets have the same black shading problems as the Epic?

For what its worth, I ran the test Rick asked for in his thread on Scarlet, I was unable to recreate the issue being discussed. Clear blacks right across the screen at any ISO. Camera on for 3 hours, will no noticeable change. Full ISO selected after 15 minutes of running, held for 30 minutes. Then back down a couple of values every 5 mins , then back to 12800. screen was constant in all aspects across the board.

FYI there is no False Color setting under Settings>Display>False Color as indicated in the Scarlet User Manual pg. 210 step 6.

The problem with threads like Rick's is that people go and assume there is a problem with a lot of cameras, or even all of them. Not the case. Plain and simple, his camera needs service. I own two EPICs and have shot on a handful more, have never had one black-shade issue.

Thanks, John. Appreciate you taking the time to do this. Hopefully a couple more people will do this too so we can get a small sample of cameras tested.

+2 here, never saw a hint of this with my Epic M or X.

Your welcome, however I do not agree with your statement that this is an "extremly common" problem If you take in to account that there are hundreds if not thousands of Epic's out in the wild being shot every day, vs the number of views on Ricks post, vs the number of people that have come forward citing the same issue....5? I am sorry for Ricks hassles but if anything I am thinking this is an issue with a small number of units. I am sure Rick wil post his findings once his camera is returned from RED. Till then ......

I'll be thrilled if a couple dozen people come into this thread just to disagree with me, and post that their Scarlets are fine. And hopefully Rick gets his camera fixed up.

My experience has been solely with RED One's, and I'm testing the waters of becoming a RED owner with my Scarlet. So far this has been the only bug I've read about that concerned me enough to look into it further. So again, thanks to people posting their feedback and results here.

Would have been great if you could abort the blackshading if you se you have the wrong framerate, lenscap not on or whatever. I have no problem with the blackshading thoe. Just nice to skip the 10min wait to be able to redo a proper one.

I have Scarlet 655 - I HAVE NO PROBLEMS :-) audio great, black shading great, just received my OLPF from RED in super quick time.

RED Scarlet is a fantastic camera PERIOD so please people stop spreading threads of trouble when there's none.

Tips

READ the manual, then reread it again, its all in there.

Still problems or lack of understanding read the threads on here or email RED, there really helpful.

Its not a video point and shoot camera that's for sure, its a million times better and produces the most gorgeous picture ever.

Agreed, Andrew. And it isn't hard to find the time to read the manual. It's not too bad. A lot of pictures in there. Put it on your phone or iPad or computer and read it in your spare time. If you're still waiting on your camera, you'd better have read it cover to cover more than once. It has a TON of useful information there.

Just to reiterate what they're saying...

I've been so busy enjoying shooting with my Scarlet, I totally forgot about this thread.

I put the lens cap on, cranked the iso up, and everything looks great. For the first 1 minute or so, there was a slight gradation from left to right, but after it all warmed up I don't see it. Took the file into Cine-x Pro and tried really hard to get bad results and all was good. I'm going to edit my first post to reflect that.
