  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What more would you like out of the REDlink?

That's not too crazy. We've talked about it internally.

Hehe cool... While we are at it...

Was thinking about the next crazy step the other night : after letting users talk to the camera via RCP, let us develop apps that would run directly inside the brain of the next generation of cameras :

Customs UI.
Advanced looks and grading options.
Specialized apps, in camera motion tracking or allow who knows a new revolutionary focus system to be created.

If camera has built in wifi/bluetooth/usb power/10gigE and serial... Let the user modularity go wild !

Would require a strong sandbox system tho but if we only access post raw recording there should not be too much danger for data integrity... But could limit scope to custom UIs and post fx like any iPhone camera app...
:-)

While we've got your ear.... :D

I would like the ability to rename a camera through REDLink. That way you could have "CameraA" hotbox etc and then when it attaches it "makes" that camera "CameraA". We could do it through packet manipulation but that's a little messy. This would bridge the real and digital world pretty nicely.

That would be nice because I would like to port it to WinRT for Windows 8.1/Windows Phone/Windows 10/Xbox etc. But WinRT doesn't like C libraries. So a C#/WinRT friendly library would be nice too while we're asking for things.

If it was just HTTP/JSON then it's incredibly simple to create data models in any language.

Also it would be great to have an emulator server app we could run locally. I'm worried about clock hours on my camera while developing. Not to mention it makes working while on the road hard.

You can do this with the current RCP Parameter set.

Use either RCP_PARAM_CAMERA_ID (CAMID) or RCP_PARAM_SLATE_CAMERA_ID (CAMMEID) depending on what you mean by the name of the camera. RCP_PARAM_CAMERA_ID is the name used in the communication dialog. RCP_PARAM_SLATE_CAMERA_ID is the camera ID on the slate dialog (A-Z that makes up part of the clipname).

I don't know if foolcontrol lets you change either of these, but the mechanism is already there.

Changing letter can be done in the app easily.
Changing camera name is not yet available in foolcontrol as of today but once FW 5.3 will be out of beta, foolcontrol iOS will allow you to change it via menu tree where this can be changed easily :-)

I think think the LUT's idea has some really cool potential. If you had a Mac or iPhone with the LUTS stored you could send this to multiple camera's or even just as you work with different Epics. Even cooler but a whole settings file saved in the Red app or FoolControl app - everything from ISO and Shutter speed to how the short key buttons on camera are config'd - so then if you swap around between rental camera's alot you can just simply send the way you like your camera set-up instantly no diving through menu's. (There is a method currently if im not mistaken that you save onto a RedMag?) but if you rent or swap between alot of camera's this may not be too easy.

I saw earlier that some people wanted a low res live feed, Im guessing this issue with this is latency? The GH4 I think has a Wifi camera feed into their little app (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HK0u46sTwig) - is this something that could be possible just so a Director or DP could get a reference frame or possibly even save a still to the iPad and not to the camera for continuity.

But I really want RMD access, I can just see all the awesome DIT apps now ^.^

I'm working on building a command line tool for this right now.

It sucks that the Redlink only connects to the back of the camera. And I would love to get 1080 wireless video to my iPad while running the Foolcontrol with the iPhone. I love the Foolcontrol! Once someone figures out the wireless video I am a happy camper!
