Weapon Side Handle Teaser on Facebook

C'mon

Redvolts keep it small and light....
Get some high power small batts.... cylendrical shaped so the can fit inside that new handle????

Design a slim high power xl battery for the xl module, so the body isn't back heavy....

I dig the new handle, but it absolutely needs power

He said it won't house a REDVOLT because of ergonomics.

Correct. Pretty much the biggest complaint of the OG DSMC Side Handle was it didn't exactly "make love to your hand". RED remedied this by designing something much, much more ergonomic. I got to touch it before it was in this form and I can confirm it's way more comfy to grip, which is great on long field days or things like that. There was likely a design conversation where the question was "Do we slap the REDVOLT in there at the cost of usability?". Usability and ergonomics wins in this case.

Keep in mind the camera is a bit lighter all together these days. You save weight on the camera body itself and using say REDVOLT XLs or something similar you are pretty much just getting up to Epic Dragon Brain only weight or a hair beyond. This allows still for a smaller weight class and you can now have 1.5-ish hours of up-time.

Is it weapon only or does it work with the epic mx aswell?

The DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] Side Handle is compatible with DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] bodies. Weapon, Scarlet-W, and Raven.

i dont get the whole wood handle and modular grip discussion on facebook, please explain!
is he saying available at the end of march, or april/may, dont get that either.

wondring if i should cancel my outrigger order, but if its going to be months(i ordered the hour you could actually do it) then id still keep it so i have something…still, wood? module? what?

Jarred said the wood handles would come in during March, depending on how those feel on the handle and if everything works well, they might ship April/May. As for the current grip material, don't know when those will ship, but probably around the same window or a bit sooner.

The DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] Outrigger Handle are slightly different tools. On the new Outrigger you mount that on top of camera and get a whole bunch of 1/4-20 mounting points as well as the ability to have the Start/Stop button up top. This would allow for you to still have the SIDEKICK on the camera and still be able to use it for instance.

The DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] Side Handle has more programmable keys and mounts to the side of the camera. It will likely be more expensive than the DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] Outrigger Handle, but you could essentially pickup and handle the camera in a similar way using both. It's just a matter of do you want more keys really.

As for the wood? Some folks like wooden handles. Some don't. That's pretty much all there is to say there.

I'm a big, big, big Side Handle and Top Handle sort of fellow. You end up moving the camera 5-100 times a day. Anything I can do to make my life easier on that front is worth it. Also, the having a Side Handle allows you to customize your camera a bit by assigning custom keys to useful features. In my case, that's usually the In Camera Focus and Exposure Assist Tools and likely some control over the Motion Mount and/or Iris on electronic lenses. I'll know more when the new Side Handle ships. It's one of the things I've missed on Weapon thus far.

Phil, how would this be different than say, the A - D function buttons on your SIDEKICK? I'm trying to assess the pros and cons of the SIDE HANDLE versus the SIDEKICK, but the Red store doesn't really give much information on the SIDEKICK. Can you say, assign the function buttons to stuff like aperture, iso, etc, and then use the rotary wheel or D-pad to quickly alter the values, or are they simply on/off buttons for features like exposure assist tools? Thanks!

Pretty much any button found on a RED camera or RED accessory can be assigned to a feature.

Thanks Phil. I assumed so, but then was a little confused when you said that it's something you've been missing on Weapon thus far.

I'm the type of shooter that keeps the Side Handle on the camera. It's a decent grip, but also has more buttons that I can assign that are easier to manage from the operator position. That's what I've been missing and that's why I'll be grabbing this new one when it's out.

thanks for clarifying, i hope the rubber grip ships sooner, but in the mean time it was suggested to me that if i didnt need a roll button on the handle, which i dont, then the dual outrigger handle might be more versatile in the long run and maybe i can take off half of it and use with the new side handle. though i see its made to connect to the front of the brain on the epics, where would it connect, if it even does, to the raven?

That makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying. Always helpful!

RED probably has the naming already wrapped up, but if not here are a few suggestions: Rocket Launcher, Sniper Grip, and Guerrilla Handle.

not sure how it mounts but was thinking last night maybe there is room to have a tiny redvolt plate instead of the sidekick, then the side handle would come out from the top and down with enough room for your fingers to fit in-between. Essentially the DSMC² OUTRIGGER HANDLE with more buttons and ergonomics and a single redvolt plate instead of the sidekick, similar in style to a lp6 battery plate. The handle would probably sit out a ways from the camera tho... just an idea. Actually a small redvolt battery plate like an lp6 plate where the sidekick goes would be great for movi/drone use.

thank you for the clarification!
i didnt realize you could use the dual outrigger on the raven, i wonder how it attaches, in front of the monitor on the back end of the body? i think ill switch my order to the dual then.
looks as if you can take half the dual handle off too right? so if i did get the side handle i could still use half of it on the left side, no? yes?
we really need to know a price estimate and functionality of the side handle!
yup that's it. If you don't need one you can take it off.(the lower rosette part will of course be still there. So maybe it's good advice to check with RED if that interferes with the future sidehandle but I wouldn't think so)
Plus: being able to adjust the handles is very sweet, too. So that way you at least have a little bit more flexibility when ending up buying two handle types.

The fixed outrigger with trigger doesn't have any true advantages over the side handle, except that it will probably be lighter and cheaper. But with less control functionality of course.

The dual is officially noted as compatible with the DSMC2 system. I don't own a weapon but the integrated top plate should allow for the same installation as it used to with Epic/Scarlet. Depending on what you need or want to install of course you can always confirm with your rep, because I don't know which of the top connectors it might cover up if you plan on using the new displays. But maybe Phil can chime in again. At least he confirmed my last post ;)

Mark,

With the weight of PAG latest V-Lock being exactly 2 x a Redvolt .. But with 90 WH of capacity.

Have you considered using:
+) The Raven 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander' (using the same material as your Weapon Brain!)
+) PAG L90 Slim ( https://www.paguk.com/landing/pag-l90-slim )
+) The TBA 'DSMC² Red Handle'

It would (if my math is correct) weigh less than the Epic + Side handle did, and with a centre of gravity closer to your wrist.

AJ

Would be interesting to know how much the weapon with the new side handle, XL module and battery weighs compared to epic with side handle and redvolt.

EDIT: just read your post, Phil. So the weapon CF + Base I/O + XL module + XL battery weighs about as much as the Epic by itself?

There's a new pic on Jarred's Facebook showing the new side handle

Supposedly there's something else that's new hidden in the picture. The DSMC2 side handle (far camera in Ninja's hand) looks like it sticks out far more than the original DSMC one (near camera).
