  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon Side Handle Teaser on Facebook

I wish someone would make a Sony battery side handle so you can hot swap bricks

Font and center. It looks quite ergonomic, yet doesnt appear to detach or rotate. Hard to tell. I'd imagine there are a few other little goodies hidden in here as well, one being quite obvious.

Hi guys, just saw the announcement, would this be a better replacement than the outrigger handle? I still have a chance to bail out on my outrigger handle order if this is real.. I would presume this would fit the DSMC2 series yeah?

New handle looks also awesome, but I'm afraid about price... :/

The DSMC2 AKS prices are very similar to the old DSMC1 AKS prices. For instance the Redvolt XL modules are on par, and the sidekick/switchblade prices are close. As such I'd expect the DSMC2 side handle to be priced similar to the DSMC1 version, which is $950.

Then again, the new version won't have Redvolt support, however it seems to be more versatile, so who knows.

It would've been nice if Red had implemented a more ergonomic solution by allowing it to rotate. Canon's rotating and sheathed hand-grip really is a good one. Nevertheless I persist with Red since the other cameras (Canon, Sony) I tried all came up short for one reason or another (weight, image, quality of product ...).
As a visual artist and soon to be new Red user waiting for the Scarlet-W, I bit the bullet to go this very expensive route because of the image quality, flexibility of design (both software and mechanical) and relatively light weight. The latter is especially important as my practice often requires the mobility handheld operation allows. At the same time, it also would have been nice to include strap lugs to support the camera while moving and/or filming. Shoulder-mount is an option, but one that is cumbersome and less than discreet outside of a film set. My back is not the best and anything that will take the pressure off of it is important. I hope that Red will consider these needs and ergonomics in their future design decisions to accommodate a user base that isn't necessarily blessed with the resources a film-making team provides yet wants what Red has to offer. Anything that will make the camera easier to use by displacing pressure from the back to the hips would be a help. I invite Red to develop a solution for their cameras. Perhaps Red could, in the meantime, provide some thoughts on this issue via their tutorial section of their website.

There will be several 3rd party solutions too.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have suggestions? I notice in your avatar that you seem balanced and very comfortable walking with your shoulder rig. Are you able to maneuver and for relatively long periods with ease? I would not be adverse to a shoulder solution for those times when discretion is unimportant.

Will they be "Smart" side handles with functionality from 3rd parties ? It's the missing link for me with the Weapon, but of course it is on the horizon!

I want to Pre-order this so bad just to have something that I can change settings with very quickly in higher stress environments, much like I change manual settings on my 5D when doing stills.

I think red should come out with a DIMC2 top bar that could accommodate current outrigger handles. The design would be pretty simple, almost the same as the current top bar for outrigger handles, but with connections that run though and allow one to attach DIMC2 top handle. New top bar should also have screw holes that align with both the back mounting points on weapon and xl module. Also would be nice if said new top bar would be flush to handle adjustments so that one could attach dicm1 or dimc2 red touch monitor to it if need be. If one could mount it on the back one could move handles forward and control camera with switch blade. Also build screws into new top bar like they are on new top handle! Last if they could somehow have design dodge the lemo adapter while mounted on the side and handles mounted on back that would be all the more amazing!

The outrigger handles are such an awesome shoot from the hip option with weapon and redvolt xl module...just wish it was more compatible with weapon.

As far as top handle design goes its a bummer there are no mounting threads on the front of the handle, but looks like it would have interfered with electronics.

I just wish there was a capacitor in there for quick hot swaps, I don't need a battery (that's just an extra case, charger etc) A capacitor could easily be hidden inside this wooden marvel or the black plastic one that started this thread.

Campaign for hot swaps when there's no room for the OMOD.

Stu.

Exactly what I was thinking. We don't need a redvolt sized battery in the grip, just a small battery or a capacitor that allows to keep the camera on for a couple of minutes, just long enough to change the main battery without shutting down the camera. I use that feature all the time on my Epic, love it.

This is the right answer.
