I have black widows all around my house. This thread is creeping me out now!

there is a remedy which can be extremely helpful in such situations. Charcoal, it sucks out the poison.

by the way while we are talking about remedies... I always seem to remember hearing that if you get bit by something poisonous in the woods you should open the wound and suck out the poison... The doctor in the emergency ward told me that was the worst thing you can do.

not only could you die from sucking down on poison, but the germs from your spit on your lips creates even a bigger problem as it infects the wound even more.

Your doctor's right. You can take something like the Sawyer Extractor (http://www.rei.com/product/407144) but definitely don't ever cut into the wound or try to suck it out. BTW, I'm there with you, several years ago I was bitten by a Brown Recluse on my back. Not fun. Hospital was able to take care of things before they turned ugly.

Hope you heal well and don't turn into this: http://www.badspiderbites.com/brown-recluse-spider-bite/

Outhouses...that makes for some painful mental images of where on the body a bite could happen...

It may come off as a bit paranoid, but that's the subconscious reason I always check under and around the seat before I sit down...a water source is a water source, right?...

OK... Tex had enough. Jarred kept teasing him all day long and Tex finally snapped. He jumped off his perch and slashed Jarred pretty good. But Jarred (remember he is 7' tall) promptly beat the shit out of Tex. Tex is in intensive care and will have major surgery this week. Don't mess with Jarred.

Wow ... thats amazing.
Jim posted a blurry grainy pic. That must be a first.

Well, I didn't want to say anything but if history is correct, yes that is one of the more common places people were bit.

Seriously, I'm starting to get a bit paranoid reading all of this stuff about spiders. I've worked on a few docs about spiders in the past and it never really bothered me, but somehow this first hand account of a friend getting bit by a Black Widow seems to make me feel a bit uneasy about what might be crawling around in the shadows.

Have guys like Steve Gibby, Kenneth, and others had any encounters when crawling around out in the woods getting cool wildlife shots?

omg wtf

A rattlesnake bites Johnny on his rear end.

“Don’t panic,” says Johnny’s camping pal, “I'll call 9-1-1"

"The only way to get rid of the poison is to suck it out."

“What'd they say?” asks Johnny, panicking.

“Says you’re going to die.”

WTF?? A black widow did THAT? Your body and widow venom do not mix... Damn.

Just as well for your girl the spider didnt bite you further up then

WOW that musta been one mean black widow....man that wound looks painful.

My buddy's aunt worked for PG&E back in the day, and one day after lunch she went to put her gloves back on...and needless to say her hand wasn't in the glove long. Got her right on the finger if I remember correctly; she was one tough cookie though and immediately went to the hospital and was fine. Apparently the venom of a BW is much less harmful to an adult. Kids can die from it apparently.

I have to admit at first I didn't realize black widow meant the actual spider; I just assumed Black Widow referred to another RED prototype spider thing like last time lol. Damn spiders!

It's actually a reactionary problem and how each person's body deals with the venom. A child could be at a much higher risk of death when bit if their body reacts in a severe manner, simply because they are smaller in proportion to the amount of venom, compared to an adult. Widow bites rarely kill people, but a severe reaction to a bite could be fatal if the bite occurs near the head / neck or other vulnerable areas.

As for Jarred's bite... I have to admit I thought it was something else and not an actual black widow spider. Partly because it was posted to this old thread about him battling with Tex. I'm still looking at that picture and don't understand the item protruding from his leg, unless it's a drainage tube like someone else mentioned. And then there's what looks like a laceration on the side of his knee. However, it's hard to tell from that picture... If it's really from a spider bite, then I'm impressed and even puzzled about the severity of the reaction. I know many who have been bit by black widows, myself included, and have never seen anything like that! :yikes:

the cut was actually from the doctor cutting a hole in the top of my knee to drain out the infection.. That white thing is a drainage wick. The actual bite was very small and really not that painful at the time it happened, but man the pain was pretty incredible 24 hours later. The infection went pretty deep, and i think thats where most of the pain came from as it was right on the knee joint. The meter long ball of wick they shoved in my knee cap wasnt so comfortable either.. luckily i pulled that out at about 4:00am this morning :)
