  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have been experimenting with RedCine the last few days to see how fast I could get r3d files to SD files for editing an offline on our Avids.

I did a short screen capture showing my findings, you can check it out here. I am using RedCine build 90, but it was the same on build 82
We encoded an hours worth of footage in about 1 hour 10 min using the same settings.

I am using a MacPro 8 proc running XP on bootcamp. I thought the nvida card drivers were faster on windows, but when tested on OSX we got very close to the same results, also with ProRes.

I would be interested in any feedback. I don't do screen recording very often, so go easy on me :)

Ahaa!
Very interesting. They should make Redcine have a no display setting.
Because it seems it is rendering twice, depending on your display setting, just one render is ending up on the screen. But if you have the same setting it uses the same process.
Very good to know!!!!!
I wonder if you can speed up a full decode, by setting the viewing settings to full just before hitting render?!?

What screen capture technique are you using?

Yes is was kind of an eye-opener for me.

Screen capture done with Camtasia, I was surprised it worked as good as it did with the way RedCine takes over the screen

This was very intriguing. I was running some similar tests today as well. I need to go back and test it out but does anyone know of the optimal preview setting when using "Standard" instead of draft. In my tests, Standard would be the bare minimum that I'd feel comfortable with exporting and having a client come in and look at without freaking out. Using SD settings in redcine and exporting out to DV50 I can also get almost realtime settings on an 8 core Mac. Much better than what I was doing earlier which yielded 24+ hour render. If you watch your activity monitor you can tell if you have your settings correctly because it uses upwards of 650 - 700% of your processor versus the 200 - 300% that it uses when not optimized. At least that's what I've seen.

Make sure your clips aint cached when exporting.

To get consistent times I have to exit and re run RedCine.

4k 1/4 medium > proj 720x576 I get 24fps on macbookpro playback

export is 4>7 fps unless cached then its 19fps

No tried external drives

Aha! I hadn't put my finger on it yet, but I was getting inconsistent render times on the same footage as I played with different settings. I was never really paying attention to where I left my display setting (half, quarter, medium, high, whatever).

Good job, Terry.

I'll have to play with this a bit... If this is how it works, REDCINE needs an option to disable display during render (like Ian said). Or it should, at render time, default the display to whichever mode is appropriate to give the best performance.

Great discovery! Thanks for doing the video as well, that was great!

I mean if you export a clip and it says exports at 8fps

Abort it.

Change the codec if you like..

Hit render again.. wherever it got upto last render , at least on my laptop, screams out then goes back to 8fps where I aborted the last render.

So it's holding as much as it can in memory somewhere.

ya cant turn it off as far as I'm aware.. poss a read-ahead tag somewhere:-/

For what it's worth I've found directly importing the proxy files into Avid (on a Mac obviously) to be pretty efficient... Although not that speed - It was taking me between 1.5 and 2x clip duration to get footage from QT reference files into Avid as media.

I agree that RedCine should default to the the appropriate setting to give the best performance while rendering, or just turn off the display, but until then I would recommend pairing up the show mode on "High" with the process setting you are rendering with.

Process: .................... Show:
Full (4K)----------------> Full res.High
Standard (2K)---------->1/2 res.High
Draft (1K)--------------->1/4 res. High

Sticking with these settings speed up rendering time with all resolutions and codes I tested.

Unfortunately all our Avids are PC, and after we make the SD files we still have to import them. It is much faster than realtime, but still takes time.

Just curious, what resolution are you importing at that speed?

Perfect! Thanks!

A single Avid licence (for Xpress Pro or Media Composer) can be used on multiple computers. You can log in to Avid's site with you dongle and system IDs and download the appropriate Mac version, install it, plug the dongle in and bingo - Avid on the Mac at no extra cost.

In the most recent case I used the 1024x512 proxies from 4K 2:1 footage, imported as DV25 (the scaling is a little wrong, but a simple resize on the timeline to letterbox it slightly clears that up).

I found similar results with the 1024x576 (which is PAL square pix anyway) from 2K 16:9 footage.

Using Jabez's MetaCheater app this gets me clips with metadata, ready to edit in about 1.5 times realtime (so a bit longer than capturing a tape, but less than telecine->tape->Avid).

I do not seem to get the same output options with the latest redcine that are seen on the screen capture posted above. any ideas?

thanks.
There is a simple text file you can edit called "ImageFormats.cfg" Just open and edit with a text editor.

In Windows XP you can find the file here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\REDCINE\Settings

In OSX you can find the file here:
MacSystemDrive\Library\Redcine\Settings

Here is what mine looks like:
