  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

It already has Dragon, My guess would be an option for a small credit towards weapon price.

Most likely, the only potential benefit of having a Helium sensor instead of a Dragon sensor in a Scarlet-w would be for Photography. I'd guess that processing power would be the main limiting factor.

I am predicting this Virtual Camera Status Quo where people are waiting for one camera that takes months until they "receive" it, while in the meantime a new one comes out so they switch for the new one, but then again the next one comes again before they receive the previous camera, hence creating this Virtual Camera Status Quo and never really have a real product in their hands.

i still own Epic-X Dragon and hope there would be an upgrade for us to 8K Helium in future :(

Nobody knows for sure what the deal is with Epic-W, but you can certainly upgrade your Dragon to a Mg Weapon and you'll definitely be able to get 8k Helium if that is your end goal.

Jarred tends to choose his words very carefully. Remember him saying "a small but big way"? And now we are looking at smaller sensors with more pixels.

That said, he never says helium is a new sensor in his update. He's careful to refer to it instead as a new pixel. Of course, the sensors will be called helium, but I'm guessing that he's phrasing it this way because the major difference will be the size of the pixel and much of the rest will remain the same. While sensor improvements are to be welcomed, this could be a blessing in disguise if it means that we're essentially looking at shrunken dragon sensors because it means that it will still be easy to match looks across the product line. This would help make sense of the fact that it's arrived so quickly while they are still well behind on getting a lot of the dragon cameras out and it's not like cameras with helium sensors would be promising better low light performance or anything that would make dragon sensors seem obsolete. Sure, Jarred's NAB helium stormtrooper was set to 3200 ISO but remember that scaling down your 8k to your delivery res is going to minimizie the noise by making it smaller. 3200 8k is going to look cleaner than 3200 6k on anything but an 8k monitor.

As a Weapon MG owner, we may have a bit of an interesting decision on our hands if the helium 6k sensor is to go in our existing bodies. It probably means shooting at higher compression at existing frame rates and needing to window down to get our current 6k frame rates back. Of course, there are all sorts of possibilities out there for how red may integrate the upgrade so none of it's too worth getting worked up about just yet. Maybe the upgrades will also involve swapping out some boards and they've got some way of keeping that affordable or maybe they've got some other trick up their sleeve. Red usually makes you wait and sometimes makes you spend more than you'd really like (if you want to keep up), but they do think hard about how to be fair with this stuff; especially if they've hinted in no uncertain terms that a particular upgrade will pay off down the line. The only time I felt I got bit by any sort of obsolescence was when the original rocket turned out to be useless for dragon footage. Hoping that the rocket-x will still be capable of cranking away on helium images.

Onward and upward. It's guaranteed to be a gas and a noble one at that.

Phill, do you have confirmed info that the height will remain the same?

Also, the difference in size to the current Dragon 6K is not that big. I see Helium being larger than Dragon 5.5K (a size that most S35 lenses cover, but still a big part struggle in that regard) by almost the same amount it is smaller than Dragon 6K.

The S35 terminology becomes confusing if the sensor width is 5mm wider than S35 and that will probably give us the same lens selection as with Dragon 6K.

Or the official sensor size is different than the one in your graph.

As you wish:

Take special note that Helium 8K S35 is damn near the same height of Dragon 6K.

The numbers are from RED and verified for 8K Helium.

As I mentioned earlier, think about the image circle and different formats. It's not going to be precisely on the knob of S35. However, it will be in bounds for the vast majority of S35 glass to cover at 8K FF.

That sounds great!

At least we know that for 7.5K or at least 7K we are getting perfect S35 coverage for ALL S35 lenses :) As those formats will be closer to the S35 width. And that is AWESOME NEWS!

Off topic: your quote seems strange, you quoted my line but it says: "

Love Detroit. Shooting a doc about it and will be there for a couple of weeks at the end of the month. Always looking for good crew hookups there - especially any that are more representative of Detroit's diversity.

I grew up in Detroit and its definitely changed from the time I lived there until now. I am happy to see Bay still is bringing work there, Michigan as a whole was gaining a lot of momentum in the film industry with the tax incentives for a while but the powers that be decided to change some things up. Its funny my Mom's office can be seen in the 1st Transformers movie and she would call me and say these movie people are blocking my sidewalks!

Enjoy the city Tom its an under appreciated gem.

Sorry for the delay on the update, I found myself stuck in Detroit.

Anyways.. For the most part it is the same old story.. ship and wait ship and wait ship and wait.

Right now we are exhausting our Dragon sensor supply almost immediately as soon as they come out of the oven every few weeks and it is going to continue that way for the near future.

If you like what we are doing.... waiting is just going to be part of the game. No cutting corners.

If you can't wait any longer.. it's ok. If you need to bail, I promise we will still love you. Or at least like you a lot :)

On the bright side.. We did just have a small batch of great 8K VV sensors come in. There will be a few very happy customers next week.
8K VV is still the slowest line of them all to be in... but it is definitely worth the wait.

As many of you might have noticed our new Helium 3.65 micron pixel is complete and ahead of schedule... WAY ahead of schedule.

Helium's first sensor is the 8K s35 build on a completely new sensor line and will be available to Weapon customers in the coming months. (Or the coming weeks for those that know where to look)

Helium will take pressure off our Dragon sensor lines and allow those lines to completely focus on Raven and Scarlet-W sensors.

O... and Epic-W will be Helium.

What Sensor is the DXL from Panvision - curious minds want to know?

Not sure about this, but I think it is the 8k (6.7k) anamorphic.

EDIT: But according to others, apparently not.
