  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET-W arrives. Instantly out of date sensor technology :|

Technology is pretty much always out of date by the time it's in consumer hands... but Scarlet-W hasn't really arrived yet, since they still aren't shipping to pre-order customers.

It's always been worth the wait with RED. We all get anxious but when I see all these insane 8K options, and helium, and Panavision, you gotta feel "Lucky" to be a RED User... 6K for me changed my 4K "Great Enough" thinking.... I cannot imagine the 8K which Phil knows better than any of us what precious it is to shoot at 8K...

Exiting for Helium details and more 8K footage, while I enjoy the 6K to the fullest in the meantime.... Time to start saving money too! :)

Scarlet-W has been shipping for a few months now. I've had mine for 6 weeks. #75 - I've had my Mini for almost a year, its still current tech...

I was under the impression that we wouldn't see a new sensor for like two years.

So basically Weapon 6k, Scarlet-W, and Raven are all already obsolete, even though they were recently released, because they contain a Dragon sensor?

Seems like waiting for theses DSMC2 brains to ship with a Helium sensor is the best option.

Can't go back to s35 after 6k weapon, I love the bigger sensor

When were you allocated and what was your timestamp? As far as many of us have noticed, no one other than people who switched from Raven orders and dealers have gotten allocated yet.

Your pretty much right about that. But I'm sure there will be some clarity on what the helium sensor is actually for, and I am guessing it won't be available to S-W anyways. So in that case if you want the new tech you would have to spend $40k+ to be in the weapon category. Or spend $15k and be with Scarlet-W. Pricewise it seems reasonable to be only offered a slightly older sensor that still kicks ass.

This isn't exactly the correct perspective, but there will be more news regarding Helium and Dragon in the near-ish future.

And yet no one who preordered a Scarlet has received one, as far as anyone can tell...

Yeah Totally fair... If you know thats what your getting upfront.

I hope that my perspective is wrong hehe.

Seems weird to think that my Scarlet-W, which I have not even received yet, would be a poor investment if new sensor tech is on the horizon.

True. Hopefully Red will let us in on what exactly does this new sensor mean ASAP, and who/what camera is it for. Seems like that update only made people have even more questions about what is going on with their investments.

Nobody knows that for sure.
It's also conceivable that Helium and Dragon are supposed to live side by side. Like many have pointed out, they do not want so much resolution/data rate unless it's for a bigger sensor (VV)
A lot of people are happy with 5K super 35. Gives a little room for reframing/stabilizing for a 4K finish.
But it's great to know that we are covered, should the 8K revolution come faster than we think.
Also, it's amazing to know that RED is alway in the knife's edge of tech. not resting on their laurels.
I see Arri losing a lot of terrain since their tech hasn't moved forward for years.
Let's wait for more Helium info before we make all kinds of decisions, and we extrapolate on all kinds of rumors. All we know is 1 size of the sensor and the resolution. We know nothing more...

Well, for one new sensor tech is ALWAYS ON the horizon. The S-W is not bleeding or even cutting edge in sensor technology. RED's R&D labs, custom cameras (fincher, bay, etc), and highest end camera technology all pave the way for something like the S-W to exist and be as wildly affordable as it is. And, look at the demand for this sensor rollout. The next line of sensors or tech won't roll out and fulfill all orders immediately. It's going to take a bit for the product to get in people's hands. Also, I personally don't expect a camera to be "in the game" for more than 18-24months, sometimes if that. All this being said I like to have as much time with a technology as I can so that I can squeeze another 6-12 months out of it by knowing it inside and out while prepping for the next thing. Just my approach so definitely take it with a grain of salt. I'm also awaiting an S-W....I feel the pain.

I thought it was really interesting when Raven and Scarlet-W went to delivery estimates of "Fall 2016" right before NAB. My first thought was they were going to update the product before shipping it because that is sometimes what Apple does. They'll push out the delivery date of an item about to be replaced to after a planned announcement of its replacement. That way you can still take orders, but the actual deliverable will be superior to the ordered product. It appears that Jared is gently suggesting that if you cancel your pre-order that it is "no-biggie" and that the Dragon line will be vastly smaller once we see a Helium announcement.

I'm guessing most of the Scarlet-Ws on pre-order are going to be going out the door with Helium, one way or another, instead of Dragon. Of course this doesn't really apply to Raven, since its price point is so low and there is no upgrade path for it. That's why we had a month of Raven.

Or maybe it is just my wild imagination :-)

It's absurd to think that way "out of date sensor technology" when the Scarlet W kicks all the camera's ass out there. RED is pushing new technology within the already groundbreaking sensor "DRAGON WEAPON" that many people dream to have on set. Then the price range comes in... All options for different scales of filmmakers... I think this is a perfect WIN-WIN for all RED Users....

My 2 cents

That I agree with. The only sensors better are stills only sensors from Sony, imo -- their top end medium format sensors... And the backs from Phase One and Hasselblad cost as much as a weapon carbon body... But as I mentioned, their stills only.

Does an upgrade path still exist for Scarlet-W, and what would that path be? Is it to Dragon or Helium?
