  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Martian - Ridley Scott + Dariusz Wolski shot on RED DRAGON

No, he does not have a wife or kid..... thats a from scene where one of his crew mates is talking to his family. I've seen it several times now and its a great movie. I really like this trailer too.

As was the case with Chris Nolan's "Interstellar" I just can't believe Matt Damon's acting as an Astronaut.

I thought that 4K was the big trend right now, with NAB and all... wasn't everyone talking about 4K, 8K and beyond?
So when will the industry truly master their movies in 4K and not just David Fincher and Netflix :tongue_smilie:

It's amazing that this is still the reality. Late 2015 and the biggest of the big scifi productions are being mastered into 2K.

I guess studios do it the cost-effective way. Do a 2k-master for cinema and hd-distribution now, save the assets and remaster later if/once Blu4k and 4k-streaming/VOD-services are worth it.

It looks like 4k in cinema doesn't get too much attention from the audience, even less than the often disliked HFR. ;) I just get a big question-mark over someones head, when i ask "Did you see it in 4k?" Nobody wants to pay extra...

Nobody wants to pay for the VFX at 4k. We put in a bunch of the glass face shields for the helmets and that would have been a lot more expensive at 4k.

Well, 2K simply does not cut it on a big screen. Especially on Dolby Vision screens/cinemas. The pixelisation is quite obvious. Shot on Red etc. I find it more acceptable due to the lack of in your face grain on top, but 2K and grain is not a pretty sight on a Dolby Vision screen (see "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" where the Dolby Vision projector clearly was no longer the quality bottleneck but the 2K source itself was).

Huh??? A prop brings down 4K? You got to be kidding.

Saw it last night, good movie. The Epic Dragon looked great. And yes, I was bothered a bit by the 2K, but I'm guessing 99% of the audience don't know any better or even care! that's the sad part. But if they were watching in 4K they would feel it, they'd come away saying things like, "it was so vivid" or "it seemed really pretty" they wouldn't know why but they would sense something was better.

We saw it last night and watched it just as a film - really great - no problems as a straight movie, yes 4k would look fantastic but 2k was great and the film immerses you so no
pixel peaking was needed.

The film was lovely. Scratched my nerdy space itch in so many ways. Nicely written, nicely shot, nicely Directed, nicely acted. Just an all around great film.

Agreed, Phil.
This 4K-2K conversation is mostly a real crock of crap by grossly uniformed posters.
If the image you're watching looks like garbage in 2k, chances are very good that it will look bad in 4K...only more so.
