  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Martian - Ridley Scott + Dariusz Wolski shot on RED DRAGON

Great photography and directing, also glad to see that 3D was proper.
Very good movie and a great showcase of Red potential.

Hats off to the film crew and Red team.

Agreed, Phil.
This 4K-2K conversation is mostly a real crock of crap by grossly uniformed posters.
If the image you're watching looks like garbage in 2k, chances are very good that it will look bad in 4K...only more so.

Who said garbage? The problem is it's 2015 and we don't even get the resolution 50 year old films get when they are restored in 4K these days. It's a step back from 35mm not to mention 65mm.

Probably it's also due that the productions got used to invest less in thechology (camera post-production) than 50 years ago.
I think Technicolor process was more costly than what a producer is ready to invest in the lab today. Proper CGI/4k/3D is costy, why shoud they invest in this if the folks out there are happy with a 2k crappy render?

Indeed. On the other hand we have initiatives like Dolby Vision with HDR and Rec2020 where cinemas (image, sound, seating, walls etc.) are designed for optimal image and sound. Having seen "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" in a Dolby Vision cinema I have to say that the 2K source was the weak link in the presentation, no longer the digital projector or cinema itself.

We saw this tonight, on our Wedding Anniversary no less, and we loved it!

VERY PROUD OF RED!!!!!!
Congratz on the Anniversary :)

I also saw it in 3D, the best film i've seen in 3d this year (those landscapes in 3d were just perfect ... and i normally don't like 3d). I am really looking forward to some behind the scenes info on this film, definitely I'll be studying it in detail. They foley, soundtrack and dialog mix totally locked perfect with everything ... which so difficult to do with these hard science films. This is a great year for RED in film.

As a side from this great movie. I viewed the link from the last post and noticed all those 5 inch mark I screens hanging all over the place on noga arms.

Can the new 5 inch mark ii screens do the same ie hang off noga arms ?

Kudos for Damon doing that wire work. One of those scenes is a fairly active stunt.

Also, nice to see somebody else "feeling the feels" about Dragon at ISO 1280.

Hello from the Hermes :)

True about the 1280, but to be fair...those histograms were PERFECT!! Fat, almost never clipped. A master class in exposure (as opposed to underexposure often seen in "problematic" 1280 .R3Ds).

Wonder if the 1280 was to compensate for the exposure loss for the 3D rig?

Overall though... I loved seeing these dailies!!

Clearly, the set was loose, fun, and inspiring.

I love how Ridely looks like O Bee Wan Kenobi with his hoodie on in the Mars scenes...

And loved seeing their process...(the screen shots, that they shoot 5K with frame guides, their RC settings, etc, etc).

Very very cool!

Yes, thanks for posting the b-roll. Always great to see that. I even glimpsed Axel Henie, the Norwegian actor, in there.
Also makes me happy to hold on to my Dragon for a good while longer ;-)

With all the bright lights you had to deal with in the set-ups, how did you deal with the CMOS Smear issue? I have been having issues every now and then and looking at the scenes in the trailer, I would imagine that you would have had to deal with this more often....?
