  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Martian - Ridley Scott + Dariusz Wolski shot on RED DRAGON

Oh man! I want to be an astronaut! Or Han Solo. This looks so cool.

To say Ridley has been an influence is a tragic understatement! The fact that he and Wolski are continuing to raise the bar visually armed with Red is nothing short of inspiring! I am so looking forward to this!

I got to see a rough cut. Very good movie, liked it better then both Interstellar and Gravity. The Dragon looked great. Matt is awesome. It's always good when you can work ABBA into a space movie!

REALLY NICE TRAILER... Definitely looking forward to this.

When will we be able to see 4K 3D ?
From what I can tell most theaters are set up with 4K-2D / 2K-3D projection. I don't even know if there are any 4K-3D out there...
The Martian and the Hobbit etc all have the footage to go true 4K-3D... But when and where can we see it that way?

Or am I just missing out on the "good" theaters?

I saw Mad Max and although it's an amazing movie, I always wished it had better quality. 3D conversion with 2K+ Alexa Material doesn't quite hold up the image quality I'm looking for in a 150 million dollar movie nowadays. (Especially the establishing shot with max and his car, when he stepped on and ate the two headed lizard, felt soft like dv material. Will go see it again tonight and check on that again)

Shot on a 6K camera and another sfx heavy film mastered in 2K. I'm still waiting for a big recent film where we actually see 4K detail.

Now thats a great trailer, full of stunning visuals. Fantastic stuff. Wow! Want to see it now! :)

Congrats Daniel! :)

I don't know if that's a projection problem because there are cinemas that can do that.
The main problem with 4k is that only a few movies get finished in 4k, let alone 4k/3D (or even 4k/3D/HFR ;) ).
Was there ever something finished in 4k/3D?

I guess it's simply for time/money-reasons - a 2k-version is cheaper and faster to do and it's enough for the mainstream. Most people prefer to save the extra-money they would have to pay for 4k or 3D and especially HFR.

Thats the good thing about movies shot on RED, they have a bright future, they can easily be remastered. VFX can be re-rendered, computers get faster every day, render-times will get cheaper... And there is Blu4k coming. I hope thats the kick the industry needs to widely adopt 4k and re-master all those movies.

Lets face it, REDUSERs are spoiled. :)

I'm always sad about movies shot with cameras that don't deliver enough details for 4k(re)masters... There are a lots of modern movies going to look softer on Blu4k than many old movies shot on film.

P.S.: i just checked my local Cinemaxx program and there is currently NO SINGLE MOVIE being screened in 4k, not even 2D. No moive at all. :(

Wasn't much of Interstellar shot Imax 65mm? Not sure how much better it can get.

Can't both movies be good? Filmmaking is a better place when everyone succeeds.

What an amazing oportunity this was. DP'ing the Florida unit for this movie was a blast. And seeing it mixed in with footage from such amazing artistic genius, is nothing short of breathtaking.
I used an Epic and a Scarlet, both Dragons on this. These cameras just rock.

So cool. Congrats, Daniel! I'll be cheering for you during the end credits! ;)

I'm really excited for this, although the last two weren't his best work. I hope the Martian will break the spell...

Once the movie is released, you need to tell us a bit more about your experience! :)

I thought that 4K was the big trend right now, with NAB and all... wasn't everyone talking about 4K, 8K and beyond?
So when will the industry truly master their movies in 4K and not just David Fincher and Netflix :tongue_smilie:

I was just thinking HOW MUCH BETTER Interstellar would have looked if shot on Red!

Interstellar had much shot on IMAX film format. I like Red as a digital format, but you don't get much better in terms of image quality than 65mm film. The debate between 35mm and digital has been stretched thin and it's probably better to shoot digital if choosing between them, but digital is nowhere near 65mm as of yet.

I do agree. I got to see Interstellar here at the iMAX in Melbourne, which has installed new 4k projectors on what it claims is the worlds 3rd largest screen. It blew my face off. Saw it three damn times in that cinema. Masterpiece
