  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Hobbit...

He was referring to "the laser projector" and nothing specific beyond that. Crimson didn't pop up until a short time ago and Jarred isn't spilling the beans on what exactly that means though I suspect it's just a product name, "Crimson Laser Projector". We were told some time ago that there are two models, a home version and a professional/digital cinema version but we have never been given straight info on what the difference is between the two. Before, they implied that the difference between a pro and home projector would be the number of laser modules (1 vs whatever) but the new policy is to STFU until everything is ready, so we'll have to wait and see just what exactly is going on with that.

Yes... so we have two weeks to go crazy with anticipation and speculate like mad men!

Where will YOU screen The Hobbit? I'm in NOVA too. I don't ask to stalk you, my friends and I are just beginning to look for the best venue.

Take your pick. Just about every multiplex in NoVA has an HFR3D screen with Sony or Christie projectors. Just go wherever is closest to you that you know is a good cinema. Go during the day if you can though. Evening screenings will be packed to the ceiling. AMC is advertising HFR3D in ticket sales, so you can't go wrong with that I suppose. I'm not too keen on The Hoffman Center though. I'll go see it at Rave Cinemas in Fairfax, which is also where I saw ROTK.

Kudos to PJ, Jim Cameron and Red for revolutionizing the cinema industry in the last few years :)

So far the list of cinemas showing 48HFR in little Norway is around 50, and they are scattered across the whole country. Even really small towns seems to be ready for it. I was very surprised when I saw the list. I will wait to pass my judgment until I see it for my self, but I have to admit I´m sceptical. I Never was a big fan of the LOTR films, nor 3D, so I guess I will be a hard sell, but I would love to be pleasantly surprised.

Tell me about it. My theater has every possible version, so now I'm torn between HFR 3D, regular 3D, and IMAX 3D (which has a 9-minute preview of Star Trek in front of it). First world problems...

I'm stuck with regular 3D for opening night, but I've got to decide which one to see the week after.

Wish I could say the same. Every theater near me is showing 3D in HFR only. No HFR for first viewing for me though.

I just returned from nearly a month traveling in New Zealand. We returned to Wellington (Wellingwood) the day after the Hobbit World Premier and Red Carpet frenzy. Visited WETA...It seems Sir Peter Jackson is a national hero. Hobbit-mania was everywhere, including the Wellington airport. Can't wait to see the Hobbit in 4K 3D 48HFR at the Emeryville IMAX!

On a side note, we were more than half-way across hiking the Tongoriro Crossing when the Te Maari Crater of Mount Tongariro suddenly erupted right in front of us. We had to turn around and evacuate, turning what would have been a 6 our trek into a 10 hour trek. Unfortunately, I had left my Epic in my motel room due to the weight and the grueling climb...but I did capture it on my GoPro!

I found this cartoon in one of the newspapers the next day:

The good news is they can "re-release" the film again in 10 years. :)

So after all that long waiting for 3D 4K 48fps marvel, we must face that ugly truth that all the 5K resolution will be crushed only into the 2K picture??? WTF... I'm quite disappointed!

Woah Paul! What a crazy experience and nice picture. I bet you are kicking yourself for not manning up to the extra 10 pounds :)

Actually, it would have been an extra 30 pounds with the lenses I was carrying; just my pack alone when completely empty is 15 pounds. Still kicking myself though!
