  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Kind of like the humbolt stuff that was hot in Sea of Cortez for awhile. The squid in the video seems bigger than the humbolt. If that is the case and they have the same level of aggressiveness I could picture some pretty hairy situations on occasion. Still sounds like fun, where do I sign up?

Happy New Year!

Yes foolcontrol is amazing. Just finished a job where I used it extensively. The subject was to shy to be filmed by a diver holding the housing. I set the housing up on a tripod underwater and pulled back a distance and controlled everything from my Mac. The results were somewhat static but at least we got some fantastic footage. We use the same system for our Dragon in side our towcam.

Thanks Mark
As you posted in another thread about the lack of GIG-E on DSMC2 at the moment (part from the larger REDVolt expander module) wanted to let you know I was able to use a cheap Ethernet to RS232 converter to make this work via the CTRL port on WEAPON : REDUSER thread

I am available by email for further assistance if needed to set this up
only issue is the need for a 5V power inside the housing to power that converter but we could find another converter that accept POE (power over Ethernet) and use a POE injector on the mac side if needed...

I'm glad someone qualified picked this up, so I can move on to other things :)

I'm expecting that base V-Lock Expander will be the most popular Expander module, and you can grab 5V from the USB port there.

Ditto on this - I'm planning on the base V-lock expander as there are some V-lock batteries about the same height that should allow a very compact housing. Now I need to find a USB to 2.1mm or 2.5mm power plug.

Mikael is that power plug 2.1mm or 2.5?

edit: Here's one for 2.1mm:

and one for 2.5mm:

I am very glad that there is a solution for getting foolcontrol working with the DSMC2 systems in underwater housings. It was one of my big hesitations moving forward. Thanks all involved.
Mikael do you have any idea what sort of cable run this converter would support on a good quality Cat5e or 6 cable.

Mark, we are working with 250' CAT5E/SDI without problem, FoolControl is busy creating some very competent u/w DP's, guys that have never so much as got their little toes moist.

Kinda makes you wonder, but. All good, we live in a changing world.

Mark you can use around 100m of good cable on ethernet... If you need more than that, a fiber converter can be used on both end and provide several sdi / gig-ethernet across several kilometers...

Info for a housing

Info for a housing

Hello all,

To introduce myself my name is Sean and I live in Melbourne, Australia. Currently I'm in the development stage of making an underwater housing for a DSLR and making it with the latest technological production methods. Basically I'm wanting to design custom housings for Red and possibly the sky is the limit with what is possible to create using the production method. What I would like to ask of you all is what do you want in a housing? Basically the size, weight, the buttons (mechanical or electronic) the features, ease of use the type of camera rigs etc. Another thing would be what is lacking in today's housings and what is something that no housing has but you've dreamed of having?

Hopefully if I get good feedback I should be able to create something different for everyone,

Thanks

Sean

Welcome Sean,

You might begin by having a look at the housings made by established manufacturers already out there, each one has its advantages and price points, and almost all of them stop by this thread every once in a while with latest news and product updates. A brief of list desirable features:

Light weight/compact - airline baggage fees are becoming ever more extortionate.
Lens versatility - DSLR and cine
Port and port extension options
Battery configuration options
External monitor options
Access to camera menus
Vacuum seal check
Versatile buoyancy adjustment options
Rugged construction and reliable O/X ring configuration
Ports for topside cable connections

These are just the first few that come to mind, what latest technological production methods are you using?

Hi Everyone:

Wanted to introduce myself as well. I've been an underwater shooter for the past 20 years and I work primarily on conservation and science projects. I've owned a Scarlet X since 2013 and I ordered the new W in Dec. I've been following the forms for quite sometime, but l haven't been very active. I've worked with some of you in the past and look forward to being more involved going forward.

My Best,

Kip

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the help with answering some of my questions, regarding lenses would you want control over iris, focus and zoom?(would motors be the best choice to control these?) With the production I'm not really wanting to say much about in case anyone copies it, but what my production man has told me, this could really change a lot of things!! Don't quote me yet but it might be possible for full access to controls with special buttons, with no possible penetration for water to enter the housing!! (not 100% sure on that but it I should be able to comment back on that in the next couple of months)

Thanks for the help Tom

Welcome Kip! That Scarlet-W looks like it could be great camera for the UW community. I can't wait to check it out.

There's an old joke in the dive business "how do you make a small fortune in the dive business? .... start with a big one."

Not trying to discourage you - just having a little fun. As Tom says - take a look at what's out there - quite a few options these days at every level of sophistication and price point.

Thanks Michael

I have heard of that joke and it applies in far more areas than diving  I'll have a look around at other products. But is there something that no housing has that you've all ways wanted?

Thanks

Yes, control over focus/iris/zoom.

I have also thought an adjustable camera tray would be a good idea, fore and aft for dome port nodal-point/lens entrance-pupil alignment, (that would eliminate the need for most port extenders, a significant cost), as well as micro adjustment of axial alignment to ensure the center of the lens is pointed directly at the center of the dome. This would provide maximum edge sharpness in all quadrants, as well as solve a number of other issues.

If this could be done on the fly/swim through mechanical/electronic control, I would certainly consider buying it.

Welcome, Kip. Last we spoke you were aboard Alucia. Hope all is well.

Tom -- you gotta have an adjustment for lenses somewhere. If it's the camera, then the housing must grow in size to accommodate. A certain volume is necessary for any given lens. All trade offs considered, PE's are the best approach -- at least that we've found.

Thanks Matt, looking forward to making a dive together in 2016!

Thank you John for not only your message, but your past help with my questions. I love your customer service! Looking forward to hearing more about Deep Weapon in the months ahead. K

Hey Kip,

I found this pic of you and me on my computer, welcome! :-)
