  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Just to add to the above.
We where using a EPic MX with quad module with 4 redvolts. And the diving was not in any warm waters really. (South Africa, we used full body wetsuits even) Eric Börjesson was the UW DOP and it was his house and our camera. We had these power down issues which resulted in the clip that was recording would not show up on the mag. But I'm sure it would have been possible to rescue with redundead.

Later at night we did some testings with different fan modes and such in a bath tube with about the same temperature water and yes the camera shut down for no reason after a while of testing, and the batteries where crazy hot when taking them out of the bat module. And reading on the back of them it is clearly stated that they shut of at a certain temperature.

So we had some large V lock batteries with us and we could reconfigure and get rid of the quad module and redvolts and proceed with no issues.

As everyone that worked wit redvolts knows, they do get warm from usage much warmer than most bigger batteries. And I'm guessing that when one battery in the quad is running it "Preheats" the battery next to it and when the first battery is out and the battery swap to the next. It's allready really warm when starting and the heat builds up faster than it can transpond trough the diving house... which makes the bat temperature go up and the battery shuts off, even though the sensor or camera is not at the same heatlevels.

Most of us shooting underwater use the 5.0" touch LCD. This is no longer available on Red store. What now ???? Is the TV Logic 5.5" going to become our new monitor of choice given its size and the fact that Gates already make a housing for it?

Gates Underwater Imaging Seminar

Gates Underwater Imaging Seminar

We have last minute openings for an Underwater Imaging Seminar here at Gates, starting Wednesday the 22nd. In collaboration with REDucation, this two day course will focus on equipment setup / test / maintenance, optics, and operation. Experienced underwater cameramen Ron Lagerlof and Sean Ruggeri will assist with their knowledge, DEEP DRAGON housings and Red Dragon cameras.

Contact me directly for details to join this distinctive event.

The nice thing about the red monitors is that they give four programmable control buttons that are easy to access. This can save thousands of dollars by having a housing with extensive control capability that is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. (alright that's a semi-shameless plug :wink: )

The 5" fits very nicely in our epic housing. We were able to fit the old 7" in the housing with some minor mods but won't know on this new one until we get hands on.

Also, there are thousands of 5" epic monitors out there so I'm sure used ones will be available for quite a while from those that are upgrading to a 7".

RT7 External Monitor

RT7 External Monitor

The Gates RT7 External Monitor shell is already cooking. Except for size, it is 100% interchangeable with the 5" Red Touch External Monitor currently sold with the DEEP DRAGON kit.

As an alternative, we already have the TVL55 External Monitor shell for the TV Logic VFM-058W. You can instruct the Epic SDI output to provide the same overlay as you get on the RED TOUCH monitors.

Thanks Johnny for pointing out the non-touch version.

The 7 inch non touch and touch are not the same beasts though. 7 in non touch is only 600 pixel vert resolution versus 1136 for the touch. I did have a look at the touch recently it's very very good. Watch this space we are launching two products shortly. The IMP housing for dragon. Likely to be the smallest form factor of any housing on the market and using full frame lenses, also Nexton an adapter system for gates housings to shoot with Nikonos RS lenses with full control. 😊

Further to the temperature issue, these notes from OffHollywood and the EWA Marine Splashbag;

FOOLCONTROL iOS will soon feature realtime monitoring of the CAL:T/E (blackshade calibration meter) and the ability to change FAN CONTROL settings remotely from the app to help control temp. Yes, it can get nice an toasty in the splashbag - so in most cases you will want to calibrate on the warmer side and set your fan settings to run the camera hot - but this depends if you are in the water - which often will offset temp. Some folks also use cold packs or even dry ice in a plastic tupperware container inside splashbags for extreme situations like shooting a sandstorm in the desert. If you are not fighting buoyancy you can also seal the bag with a larger amount of air inside - and speaking of buoyancy - there's plenty of room for weight(s) to be added and even plenty of room height wise to keep the camera on a baseplate and even have lens control motors & rods.

Also worth mentioning is that the RED-A splashbag ships with 5 silica packets to absorb moisture from condensation within the bag. You can use any silica packets - but what is cool about the ewa-marine ones is that they have blue letters/markings that turn pink as they absorb moisture - so it's a great visual indicator that there is moisture in the splashbag. You can take these silica packs out and throw them in the microwave on the popcorn settings and they will restore to blue and be moisture free for re-use.

Thank you John & Matt :-)

I usually always work in 5K / 8: 1/50 fps. The lenses are Canon 15mm and 16-35mm.
The shots I try to have the ISO at 800, aperture at f8 and speed as high as possible.

Figured I would check in and let everyone know I am still alive, I should have more content coming in near future.

Hello friends,

I know I've been MIA for a long while, but I've followed from a distance. I have a quick question/request for assistance.

There is a gentleman, who should be joining our forum soon as he has bought my last RED ONE/DEEP RED system, and he would like to pick it up at DEMA, which he will be attending and I won't.

Do you know if there's a way I can ship a couple of cases to the convention center to be picked up there? Do they offer such a service? If things need to be shipped to an exhibitor, then perhaps one of my friends here will let me ship to them and my buyer can pick up once there. But as I don't want to ship 100 lbs overnight or second day, and as I don't want to take a chance with ground shipping with the rather narrow 4 day DEMA window, then I would ship early enough that the stuff might get there before the show. Is this doable?

Thanks in advance,

Guys, have any of you had success using Resolve color charts underwater?

Rudi,

I use FedEx "HOLD" services often. Ship to a nearby FedEx/Kinkos, the packages are held there up to one week waiting for pick up, then returned. Not exactly to the convention center, yet just a cab ride away.

There might even be a FedEx station at the convention center that will accept the shipment.

Cheers,

Bert

Thanks for the advice and offers to help,

The Red ONE/Deep RED system is on its way to Ron Lagerlof, who will deliver it to the new owner's agents at DEMA, thus enabling a new member of our small community to join in the fun that is underwater 4K acquisition. That new member's name is Steffan Kilby by the way, so whenever he comes onboard our forum, let's give him all the help he needs, as we routinely do around these parts.

Thanks to Ron and all, and have fun at DEMA, I cannot make it this year.

Sorry we'll miss you at DEMA Rudi. We'll watch for Steffan.
