The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

That having been said, I would like here to reiterate, all of the fantastic stuff I got on that trip was enabled by Mike Hastings. After being crushed by the Amphibico/Fedex screw-up and the resultant absence of my brand new Rouge, Mike came through with an Epic housing for me at the very last minute, at no charge, an act of generosity I will not soon forget. The housing performed flawlessly.

Despite all of Mike's faults, the biggest one him being from Minnesota :-), he is a great guy, and a real champ. Cheers Mike.

Thanks also to Ron Lagerlof, in attempting to maneuver the Rouge past Bahamas customs from Lauderdale to Bimini, in some sort of timely way, Ron allowed me unrestricted access to his internationally enabled I-Phone, I must have racked up a few dollars in those angst-ridden discussions. Next time in Los Angeles, I owe Ron a big steak dinner and an excellent bottle of wine, at a restaurant of his choice.

You guys rock! Heartfelt thanks!

I have faults? ...... alright, too many to list ... :(

Although it may be a good thing that Virgin doesn't fly to Minneapolis ;-), Thanks for the kind words. Things have been a bit haphazard here lately with the major move, family stuff, and a couple new products (and thank you to a couple great customers that have been very patient with me) but when a situation is staring me in the face I usually come through - glad I could help.

We think the world of Mike and his products. Well done Mr. Hastings.

Hi all,

Anyone aware of a database library tool to hold track of all your footage?
Something where you can tag and perform quick-searches on your clips.
Now I just store my clips on a file-based manner, catalogued per critter.
Not exactly user-friendly :-/
Thanks!

Check out CatDV works well with most footage but unfortunately not with .R3D. but if you transcode to ProRes or another codec then you can tag, catalog and search to your hearts content. I have not found a way to carry all the relevant MetaData i.e. camera settings down to the transcoded version. I have spoken with them about the R3D files and they said they are working on it but were not prepared to give me a time frame.

Just as Tom says, I think it's a cool tool too for quick browsing of clips.
There would be some nice extra features possible (like deleting a (bad) clip) but given it's a new product, I guess it has a lot of potential for growth :-)

Besides deleting a clip, what else would be useful ?

Would it be useful to create some kind of 'offline' catalog (with similar small animated vignette and metadata info) and would it be more useful to you than the pdf / HTML catalog foolcat can create ?

foolcontact is just a small "preview" or "spin off" of another 'in progress' app that will allow metadata ingest (see a quick preview of an early beta here : http://vimeo.com/foolcolor/metabox)

I'm not at all a full time developer (doing it on my fool time) but feedback is welcome for future developments..

Remote Lens Control

Remote Lens Control

Something of interest to DEEP EPIC owners -- current and future.

We released information for a Remote Lens Control (RLC) kit this week. Surface DP / focus puller now can have control of focus, iris and zoom. Heaps of work went into this project, with great support from Redrock Micro and Heden to modify their motors to fit inside the housing. That's the only way we could offer this kit without modification to the shell itself.

There's a lot of info on the RLC kit, so PM or email me for details.

Official Release:

Gates Underwater Products releases Remote Lens Control Kit

RLC provides surface control of focus, iris and zoom for the discerning DP.

Poway, CA – 1 March 2013 – Gates Underwater Products is pleased to announce a highly requested accessory for its family of digital cinema underwater housings: the Remote Lens Control (RLC) kit.

The RLC is a key component for any production location that requires surface control of focus, iris and zoom. Combined with Gates SDI surface feed kit, the topside DP / cameraman / focus puller retains full monitoring and control of underwater scenes -- a long standing requirement of many cinema productions.

The RLC kit has several key features:

  • Use of popular brand controllers from Redrock Micro, Preston, Heden and others;
  • Integrated and tested with Gates DEEP EPIC;
  • Can be readily added / removed from the housing for different shooting situations.
The RLC kit is backed by Gates legendary service and 2 year warranty. Reliable, durable, dependable for over 40 years. That’s why customers say:

Don’t Take a Chance....Take a Gates!

Thanks Mark, I'll check it out!

so, a new post on Wetpixel shows the Nauticam in action. pretty nice, you had me right up to "The Block" at 3:10... I'm over it.
Love my Redmote, even for it's flaws...

Nice music though...

What flaws with redmote?!?!
I really like having an external monitor. I also like having multiple clamps around the housing to properly and equally compress the O ring and of course the seal check is a make you feel good pre-dive check. I believe the naughtycam is limited to lens options as well, last I've heard anyway.

Short video of the Feb. trip to Bimini.

Extraordinary footage Frazier what lens did you use for this material? Really sharp edge to edge wonderful!

Thanks Ross and Johnny,

Sigma 14mm lens, Aquavideo housing. Behind a 8 inch glass dome, most shot at 48 and 60fps. Thank you for your kind comments. I love the lens and although not quite as sharp as some, sharp enough for me and my clients...:smile5:

Shot the same look in camera that I created in Red CineX from a clear day at Tiger Beach. Then a quick tweak in Red CineX after.
