  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The first RED Weapon 8K has Landed!

Phil, is the firmware the same as WEAPON or somehow different?

Congrats Phil!

Do you still have a Canon Motion Mount? If so, would be nice to know what it covers and if the ND works.

Was hoping you were one of the "other ones" who got their camera. Soon I hope as that suggests the line is moving.

Hurry up and post something

Wow, congrats, I'm interested to see some pics. I'm also interested in how Still glass covers the sensor. Some day I hope to have my own, seems like it's a year or two away, and would love to use my Leica and Sigma glass. I'm confident the long lenses will work fine, but it's the wides that I'm curious about.

Great news, landed in the perfect hands to champion this beast. Will be watching from the sidelines on one this one as 5k is more than enough for me for the foreseeable future.

niiiiiiice!

I don't know anything about the Nikon mount. Leica Mount should work. I have one here to test. PL Motion Mount for 6K, I can't imagine that will work correctly, but hell I'll try it out. Why not :)

Congrats Phil !
FWIW we tried the Motion Mount on a 8K VV ANA camera at RVZ 2 weeks ago and it worked just fine with no vignetting but it might be different on a spherical / full 8K sensor width... let us know once you tried that.

Congrats and well deserved Phil.

Who else has one? I would like to rent for a couple projects

Just wanted to say thanks guys.

I've been poking and prodding the camera for a bit. Very interesting stuff thus far.

I think the biggest revelation I've had thus far is how the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF looks with the extra resolution. When I shot Forged I just had the Standard OLPF, but I have to say the STH OLPF looks pretty damn banging at higher ISOs actually. I'll be exploring that a whole bunch.

Congrats and well deserved Phil.

I know a couple other peeps got the good news. Very, very soon you'll know.

I've got one longer gig coming up and bidding on one other, but hit me up with dates and we'll see what's possible.

Congrats Phil !

That's fascinating! I will indeed check that out.

very cool, lets see some work!

Heh. First few hours so far have been making sure it's bullet proof. So far so good. I'm going to likely shoot a short thingy this coming week that will be out soon enough.

I'm having a bit of a special moment personally. Slapping a few different lenses on there really provides a different world. The FOV is very cool and investigating the different draw that each lens has produces has been fun.

Kinda smitten with the Mamiya 45mm f/2.8 on there. Picking up my Zeiss 28mm f/1.4 Otus shortly as well.

Congrats Phil! Can't wait to see what you do with this beast.

Whelp I'm getting to the end of the first "hours" of having the camera. Looked at all 3 OLPFs and compared 8K FF 5:1-12:1 to motion picture film. Disregarding the format size comparisons and focusing on just resolving power, the only thing that comes close to the resolving power of the 8K FF frame is something around or larger than 65mm 5-perf depending on who's juice you're drinking regarding what film is. It is actually closer to properly scanned IMAX 15-perf.

This isn't exactly a revelation to me as I've sort of known this for about 4-5 months since Forged. But this is the first time I've been able to "stare" at it further with the OLPFs.

It's also notably cleaner than even slower film stocks, also nothing new here as we've known this for a while regarding the Dragon sensor. I'll have to shoot some stuff at ISO 2000 with the STH so you can see what I'm talking about. Didn't really shoot much below ISO 800 today, but I'm gonna try some ISO 500 shortly. Maybe a full range of tests again just to do it.

Did some of my normal tinkering with various finishing methods as well. There's a lot of meat in the REDCODE RAW if you looking to dig into detail as well, if that's your thing that is. It's otherwise a nice smooth, high resolving image.

Considering the camera's physical size & weight, it's technical merit, the flexibility of this particular format size, and the fairly wide range of optics available to this format I'd say this is surely new territory for a lot of filmmakers.

I'm having a hard time fully explaining everything I'm seeing and I'll have some fun images soon, but I'll try to summarize this. If you love making motion pictures and "care" about your images, you'll love this thing.

Glass will be the gripe for some as there isn't much proper cinema glass designed for this format (or approximately this format), but seriously if you expand your mind and take a look at all the glass that's been used on VV in the past, modern DSLR lenses, and more recent FF35 cinema glass you'll find a lot of potential.

Today I've used optics from 45 years ago all the way up to stuff released this last year. I'm exceedingly pleased.

My biggest question is will my contax lenses work with 8K? I'm sure you will be letting us know what glass works and what doesn't as you shoot with your new toy. The other question is how much space the 8K files take up. thanks Phil

Don't know about Contax coverage yet, but I'm actually going to "redo" all the lens coverage thus far on the 8K VV. Now that everything in the camera is final and not prototype it's imperative we get good info.

As for the files size, I can help you with that now. Give this a whirl:

And if you need to know things like DPX and ProRes or DNxHR/HD files sizes:

Stoked for you Phil, you will produce stunning imagery with that sensor that's for sure and I can't wait to read your input on all the lenses you will test.
Exciting times! Can't wait to get that upgrade, I have a water housing at the office ready for Weapon 8K ;)

I am so happy that it is you that got one. You are the perfect friend to have one and test it and push it to the limits. I wish I had mine for my Transformers work ( my weapon is getting quite the workout along with Weapon 3D rigs and IMAX Alexa 65 3D) but I am so happy for you Phil.

Congrats!

Cheers,

Peter

Exceedingly wonderful news, congrats Phil ... and perhaps we're one step closer to more predictable 8K wafers and some traction in the order queues :)

Congrats, Phil! Looks like fun times ahead. :)
