  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The first RED Weapon 8K has Landed!

I just downloaded the BETA build but I can seem to find the REDWideGamutRGB

Edit>Preferences>General

Select "Show Advanced Controls"

Restart REDCINE-X PRO.

Good to go.

Go to Edit->Preferences and put a check in the box next to "Show Advanced Controls"

At this point, REDWideGamutRGB will show up in the Color Space dropdown at the very bottom. Log3G10 will also show up. Both of these are new.

As Phil points out, this may appear underrated compared to DC. This color space is very large an contains everything the camera can capture.

Edit: Damn, Phil beat me to it! :)

Patrick, you should try the new REDWideGamutRGB in RCX-P build 42. It should no longer have that purple pattern. You will need to enable legacy as it is not exposed by default. It is at the bottom of the list, just below XYZ.
Just downloaded 42 and tried the REDWideGamutRGB ... WOW ... I just love that. Someone's going to need to explain that in detail, I just love that one so much!

... Are you referring to the noise pattern you see in the noise floor? Like if you lift it up 5-8 stops? Or something related to edges?

I also mostly prefer the look of DRAGONcolor2. I find it provides a truer color, richer more vibrant blues, and generally more pleasing skin tones. The key thing with DC2 is to know when not to use it. Mainly I avoid it when shooting things like wide shots with punchy neon signs. Also, if I'm shooting recklessly or with certain lenses that exhibit more chromatic aberrations I'll sometimes go for DRAGONcolor. ....
Agreed as it's a very interesting starting place now. Most will find the need to punch up the saturation a bit when getting started. If using REDCINE-X PRO, Post:Look:Effect:Saturation with a value of 1.3-1.5 should provide something pretty fun to look at. REDWideGamutRGB's introduction aslo provides a glimpse at some interesting potential as well.
I am normally in Linear mode because 90% of my stuff goes to vfx so can't use some of those tricks. I also prefer dragon 2 over dragon 1, and since I convert based on a spec it is currently always set on dragon 2/linear. I think where I have the wavy noise problems is happening in a combination of factors (and btw an example is in your black shirt on B004_C005):
1) in linear mode it's normally the 3-5 bits after kelvin/tint/iso is set
2) it often happens when the kelvin/tint/iso is shifting up the bits 1&2 to bits 3-5
3) I don't think this happens at all when I'm using something like a hive light (i.e. if the rgb bumps on the histogram are roughtly aligned in the dark/shadow zones when the camera kelvin is default).

I btw really love the new redwidegamutrgb.

Thanks Phil, appreciate the r3d and I owe you a kidney!

And that's a wrap. I'll have more to say shortly, but after almost 3 months of filming I'm going to bed :)

But holy hell the 8K visuals are OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Congrats on the successful shoot. Looking forward to more details about the project and seeing what you've managed to capture.

Congrats!!

What were your lenses of choice - what were you finding looked best on Vista Vision?!

best

Is there any other lenses besides these that fully cover the Vista Vision image circle?

The short list in no particular order and often what I've been shooting with:
- Zeiss Otus Primes
- Zeiss CP3
- Tokina Cinema Vista Primes (first "designed for VV" lenses)
- Sigma Cine (the 14mm has some slight vignetting in the 8K FF corners)
- Leica-R (haven't tested every one of these, but many cover)
- Mamiya (got mine converted to PL and Cine-Mod via Duclos)
- Olympus OM (a great deal of these cover)
- Canon CNE (haven't tested every lens, but many cover)
- Leica Thalia (designed for 65mm)
- Cooke S7 (designed for VV)
- Whitepoint Optics

Numerous zooms too. I use the Zeiss CZ 28-80mm T2.9 for instance a bunch, but mostly for 8K HD filming.

Thanks Phil...great list. Here's what I could gather from their official websites...

Top 10 lenses with the biggest image circle in 2017

1. Whitepoint Optics 82mm
2. Leica Thalia 60mm
3. Tokina Cinema Vista 46,7mm
4. Cooke s7i 46,31mm
5. Zeiss CP3 46mm
6. Schneider Xenon FF-Primes 44mm
7. Canon CNE 43mm
Mamiya?
Zeiss Otus Primes?
Sigma Cine?
Olympus OM?

Curious about the Whitepoint Optics... Anyone use them or have any references?? Pretty limited on things I can find on the web at this point.

Haven't had them on my 8K VV but might soon as Camtec has a set and they are close by. They are rehoused vintage Hassy glass.

You can find most of the "base lenses" pretty easily these days.

We have released the TS70 series in June 2017. ARRI uses exactly the same optic in the Vintage 765 series. We've made minor changes to the optics we've ever been able to get the most beautiful Bokeh like ARRI? We use full circular iris so Bokeh is milky throughout and at the same time readable. We have rebuilt all chassis parts and we only use glass parts from Hassy
