  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The First Komodo Out in the Wild

This is amazing Phil, only got to wait 15 minutes for it to download. Appreciate all the effort you've been putting in so that we can further understand this unique camera.

FYI, I've put this clip also in that "reserved" 2nd post in this thread. When I have other stuff, I'll drop it there too. I know I have been posting too much and it's been hard to follow along!

How random, I have that same book .

Heh. I am indeed an OG Cousteau Kid. I actually nearly did a couple summers on the Calypso way, way, way back when. I met Jacque when I was about 6 when they docked at Catalina. Still remember that whole day.

Oh, other fun fact about the Komodo clip you have. Camera was on for about 18 hours. I think I cycled power a couple times there, but I was doing silly tests like rolling and unplugging the camera to see what would happen. Easier to setup the test shoot stuff after the battery burns. Those took the longest.

Thanks Phil. These are the most natural skin tones I've seen to date on a Red with little to no adjustment. I liked that moment in the mega stream when you started to compare it to some other camera but chose to not name it.

Phil, thanks for that. What is the meaning of the fact that the Gamma setting in the metadata is RedGamma 4? I've started a separate conversation with the team at Blackmagic Design about whether IPP2 recording (with the intention of using output tone mapping) kinda makes gamma-at-recording a kind of anachronism, and whether controls should be changed so that the gamma setting is exposed more as a display choice when selecting output tone mapping. But curious about your thoughts here. We've had IPP2 for quite a while, and it still seems as if the design of that system and the way that not only the NLEs, but even RED's own cameras and Red Cine-X has exposed some strange corner cases in the way it works.

That is awesome Phil, I worshiped him as a kid and he's still a hero of mine . Those films he made were transforming and that's not evening counting his numerous inventions .

Thanks so much for doing this, Phil! This is very useful...

Okay, onto some actually pretty damn useful stuff. I've just finished several days of power testing. Yes. Days.

Komodo Diary: Day 11[/yellow]

My general circadian rhythm nets me between 18-32 hours extra uptime per week than average, and as such I've been investigating Komodo's power draw for several days. Which is a time consuming test to do right, but necessary if you're going out the field and building your kit.

So first thing to know, at the moment Komodo takes about 20 seconds to boot, no biggie. As things are added and/optimized that might go up or down.

You have choices for power. You can use one or both of the Canon BP slots on the camera brain and yes it's hot swappable (drains left to right, one at a time). Or you can use the 2-pin LEMO-style DC-in on the back and feed a V-Mount, G-Mount, or whatever battery. I do recommend using the actual Canon batts. The chip in there transmits the charge info to the cam and the cells are good. Some of cheap options are, well... Cheap and actually suck, not all, but some.

Onto the meat of this meal.

Komodo Power Draw as of now. 1X Canon BP-955 ~ 1.5 hours. 1X Canon BP-975 ~ 2.5 hours. GDU Mini V 98Wh ~ 4 hours. Anton Bauer 150Wh Dionic XT ~ 6.25 hours. Now in particular be aware if you powering things like accessories through the D-Tap from those bigger batteries, some things draw more power than you'd think, like super bright displays. But for a straight run, you get the idea. I have a brick here that can power Komodo for over 11 hours. Using a Shark Fin, you can literally be up all day on a camera you can still lug around.

TL;DR, Komodo is not very power hungry and is rather power efficient, which is nice to see in a raw recording compact camera. Hope that helps you plan your juice. This is actually inspiring me for some specific recording ideas, but that's for a different day.

Hello Phil... Do you know if the Audio input will work same as Helium: Using an A-Box to split the stereo to mono and being able to have 2 lavaliers etc instead of just 1 like on DSLR's?

Thanks...

Hey Phil,

Loving all the updates and looking forward to finding out more and more, appreciate all the info and posts. I've used RED many times on the work I do but this will likely be the first one I own.

You must have a deluge of questions but I'd love to throw a couple more into the mix :)...

Would it be possible to post an image of your set-up with the mic and audio box? Would love to see this set-up.

I know having read hundreds of pages over the last few months about Komodo that this isn't inteded as a full feature A-Cam, however (and maybe you can't say), will there be a handle accessory that has iris/shutter control as with the DSMC2 bodies?

I'm asssuming there's no reason why you couldn't use something like a Gratical if you wanted to use an EVF in a more shoulder rig style via the SDI instead of a monitor?

Finally, what's make/model of the baseplate with the Arri rosettes that you have on in the photo wih the batteries?

Thanks again!

Hey Phil, the sample shot R3D drop box link appears to not work. Get a 404 error.

The Youtube version looks pretty good though. Much thanks for all the hard work.

Apparently 3000 downloads nukes my dropbox. I'll find another solution. I can host it on my website, which has unlimited bandwidth, but who knows if a bunch of people download 30GB of footage what they will do!

I'll make a smaller chunk and find a place for it.

Such a bummer. I mean, the director on this shoot was a real pain in the butt :)

Thanks alot Phil! I got a couple of "Checksum" errors when I tried to unzip the file.

BitTorrent was designed to solve this problem.

Phil,

If this helps,

After I downloaded the 26 GB file and tried to unzip it, It tried to break up the video into about 7 or 8 R3D files. Of the 7 or 8, I was only able to get 4 and the other 3 or 4 R3D files gave me a "Checksum Error" at about 98% completion. So of the 4 R3Ds that did unzip successfully, below is a 9 second clip that's 2.33GB if anyone just wanted to try that until you're able to upload your original file on another website or server.

9 seconds 2.33gb file

This doesn't work... I tried the file in red cine X and premiere and doesn't work... Are you able to upload the original file? I tried downloading the original but always got stuck at 99.9%
