  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The dream has come true - thunderbolt redmag reader

I would be stoked to know how much faster it is as well, you can test with a free app on mac called - Blackmagic Disk Speed Test

Also where you buy that? Cant seem to find on the line.

I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but you guys are aware that this is a USB 3.0 interface wrapped in a Thunderbolt interface, so you will still be bottlenecked by USB 3.0 speeds.

I'd suggest that the max read speed off the RedMags themselves would make the difference between USB3 and TB2 bus speed irrelevant anyway. That said, I'd be stoked to have both USB3.1SS and TB2 ports on a reader simply to make it easier to integrate into various computer systems/networks.

If anyone has empirical evidence that RedMags can be read at greater than 350MB/s then perhaps it matters, but that would surprise me.

Cheers - #19

FYI, when docked it will use the SATA connector, not the USB-3 plug which is handy for undocked mobile use...

I can offload 2 minimags in the G-Dock Ev Thunderbolt at 900+ MB/s combined.

i think it's sata. it has a usb interface but that case is sata.
im using the same solution

For backup purposes these are great. All of these accept the mini mag reader (or two) and come with TB2.
G-Tech is tough to get here in Germany though, and I'm still on REDMAGs anyway so I'm out of luck. But this is one of the coolest products out there.

A 4Bay would be sweet, for a smaller on-the-go-package.

yes Benjamin, that's the guy. I haven't clocked the speed yet. It seems faster, but will do that and let you know. also it makes a great rugged case for the mini redmag reader.

Stephen, it's connected via the sata port in the back of the reader. I had to remove the plastic cover to get it to fit. seems faster, will do a test.

Hi Patrick,

Sorry, I was heading out the door when I typed that and I typed the wrong interface and also explained myself poorly. Rather than provide clarification I just muddied the waters. My bad.

What I was trying to point out is that the slower interface (it is in fact sata as you mention) is downstream of the thunderbolt interface and will thus be a bottleneck. I do see better speeds from the Minimags than from the 1.8's, but still under the theoretical limits of USB 3.0 and Sata. (but pretty close to actual max throughput speeds) There can be lots of reasons for that. As Blair points out the media may be the thing limiting speed.

I haven't had a chance to test this as I didn't bother with the thunderbolt adapter because of the issues aforementioned.

Thanks very much for testing this, I'd very much like to be wrong about the lack of a significant speed differential between USB 3.0 and the sata/thunderbolt interface.

I look forward to your findings.

Steve
