  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

Ketch, unfortunately Jarred said a few months back that the red bolts were a feature only for his cameras, but I am all for pushing the issue to see what we can get. Maybe an accessory kit since the side panels are removable anyway?

Jarred, care to share the RED bolts with us?

KO

sure...

These are Custom RED SSDs. Off-the-Shelf SSD's do not have a high enough wear rate on their connectors.

You will need the RED STATION to read them, and like Deanan mentioned, they are wicked fast.. as our Media always is :)

64GB SSD $950.
128GB SSD $1800
256GB SSD $3200

R1 SSD Camera Module $1500
EPIC SSD Camera Module $2500

Are they fast enough for 5k at 120fps?

It's going to take an investment to get into these, a lot more than it was going into Red media initially.
2x 64gb = $1900
1x Red Module = $1500
1x Red Power Station = $250
1x Red SSD Module = $250
Total for minimal SSD config: $3900!

Cheap next to those who were rockin Red Rams, but for everyone else, that's a chunk of pennies. I hope I could order it on launch, though also hoping those SSD prices get into some volume and come down. I'd love to see the 64gb about 3 for $1800.

RED Station Base - $250
RED Station 1.8" - $250
RED Station CF - $250
1.8" SSD Side Module for R1 - $1500
64GB 1.8" REDMAG - $950
128GB 1.8" REDMAG - $1800
256GB 1.8" REDMAG - $3200

Hmmm....interesting. At minimum one would need:

RED Station 1/8" - $250
1.8" SSD Side Module - $1500
(1) 64GB 1.8" REDMAG - $950
Total - $2700

But more practically for a lot of shooting scenarios
RED Station 1/8" - $250
1.8" SSD Side Module - $1500
(2) 128GB 1.8" REDMAG - $3600 (need at least two so you can be downloading one, shooting on another)
Total - $5350

And for those who don't have to worry about money:
RED Station 1/8" - $250
1.8" SSD Side Module - $1500
(4) 256GB 1.8" REDMAG - $12,800 (3 mag changes, keep media on drives until next day)
Total - $14,550

Thanks Shawn.

Question: can you clarify what you mean by this:

1x Red Module = $1500.

Is that the SSD module that was to attach at the back, or is this a guess of what the side SSD upgrade will be for EpicX?

EDIT: I think you meant the Red One Side module. Not Epic.

:puke: I'll take one 64gig please.
One just won't cut it for most of us. Two of these will be necessary at minimum. The 128GB is a better value but it's just one MAG and you can't have it offloading with nothing in the camera. So, two 64GB Mags at least allows you to swap out.

how much would it be to upgrade the stage 2 side cf module to the ssd side module?

I think you forgot the Red Station Base - $250.

Base Is optional remember... the 1.8" SSD Station ( and 2.5" Station ) can both be bus powered off of firewire. If you are using Esata ( like you should ) then the Base Station powers a whole stack of modules so you dont have individual power cords and wall warts.

Thanks Shawn.

Yeah, $3900 is what'll take to get my Red using these. And then I've just made my 4x 16gb cards unusable. Great. I really want to love SSD, I do. Just having to spend $3900 to make all my current media worthless on my Red is kinda sucky. Though, I wonder just how user swappable the SSD vs CF is.

Now this may be too late. But what I was really hoping for, was something in the form factor of the RedDrive that was a bay that took SSD. Best of both worlds. Was that considered? The drive port should be plenty fast enough, should be a matter of proper pin wiring and such.

and this is where the incredibly fast offload rates of the cards really comes in handy...

Yeah totally agree, I think 2x of the 64gb is the barebones config, always gotta have redundancy in the field. 3x would be best. In fact, I wonder if Red would do a 3x bundle right off the bat.

64gb at best data rates on the Red1 should be what, about half an hour of shooting time?
