  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

Can the Fixed lens scarlet support this side module? It looks to be about as long as an Epic and can support the length of the 1.8" SSD from what I can tell.

If not, is the 1.8" back module still in the pipeline so that we may add SSD to Scarlet?

KO

Yes indeed...

RC42 4k 2:1 and will offload at ~4x realtime.

What are the other factors of this speed claim? Or is this purely based on the theoretical throughput of the drive itself? I assume since it appears the Red Station is required, it's got to be part of the equation that leads to this speed claim.

What type of computer? To what type and speed of destination storage?

2. Just how 'user swappable' is the Red1 SSD module? Is this a 10 second 1st AC swap, or more like a 10 min clean environment careful swap?

I've swapped CF modules in the field Shawn, it takes a few minutes and just requires removing a few screws and a bus cable. Of course this is just on the Red One, I can't say anything about the Epic's ease-o-swap.

Off-the-Shelf SSD's do not have a high enough wear rate on their connectors.
That is sooooo true, unfortunately. I managed to break a SATA connector on an SSD simply by removing the cable normally. Not covered by warranty, unsurprisingly.

A thought occurred (a rare occasion over here, I promise). Since the SSD sticks out from the module anyway, some additional length should not be a problem. Hence, how about RED manufacturing a "docking connector stage" which transmogrifies the regular SATA connector of a third-party SSD into the kind of connector required by the SSD module? You bolt it on the drive and never remove it, thus negating the wear rate of the original SATA connector. I'm pretty sure someone else will eventually be manufacturing such add-ons anyway, unless RED is again going with the firmware-validation route and prohibiting the use of third-party SSDs.

Yes, I know: I'm a cheap bastich.

THE PRICES

These are Custom RED SSDs. Off-the-Shelf SSD's do not have a high enough wear rate on their connectors.

You will need the RED STATION to read them, and like Deanan mentioned, they are wicked fast.. as our Media always is :)

64GB SSD $950.
128GB SSD $1800
256GB SSD $3200

R1 SSD Camera Module $1500
EPIC SSD Camera Module $2500

Well, that is not too bad I think...Remember the RED CF 16GB are now 300 each, that would be equal to $1200 if you wanted to get 64GB and now with SSD that will cost $950, which is $250 cheaper...

Or the Scarlet ;)

So while it has been a topic of much speculation, it has never definitively been said that the 64GB CF card development is being cancelled.

So for scarlet users who are unable to spend around a thousand dollars on recording media, is the 16GB CF card the only game in town?

I plan on going SSD all the way on Epic. CF was great for handheld on Red One to keep the weight and bulk down. Adding the SSD module on Epic will barely make a difference in terms of weight and bulk.

I wrote that here 4 months ago... It looks like I'm not the only one who will be going with only SSD on Epic.

Yes, I'm also curious about the 64GB CF.

Jarred, can we get some info about whether they are still on the roadmap?

Jarred,

When can we expect to rollout this product to current Red One MX & M users?

Since early 2008 I'm shooting with my RedOne in controlled studio environments as well as on the street, desert, winter, rain, chopper you name it. Right from the beginning I bought 20 8GB CF cards. They served me very well, never let me down and are a very secure medium, as secure as HDCAM for instance. The only disadvantage is the short runtime of 4 minutes in 4K. But 35mm does not give you much longer runtimes when you don't want to use 1,000 feet magazines. It depends what you are used to, of course. 16GB cards give you roughly the runtime of S16mm, plenty enough, IMHO.

Please bare in mind that recording a whole day on one single medium bares a higher risk of data loss than splitting the day onto several media.

The only downside of CF cards in the moment are their performance. Otherwise they are conveniently to backup (Nexto) and hardly to break. I don't know how SSDs behave in this regard.

Mighty big weight reduction for the R1, about two pounds and a lot less torque which makes it feel even that much better. New life and armament for the tank. Just realized something; this means the R1 is going to start looking a little NASCAR if every time some new addition rolls out, they start labeling it on the broadside. MX, SSD, ETC...
