  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Someone ask for Rec Start/Stop?

Ok, heres what I'm going with... I added two buttons for volume control on the newly added piezo buzzer. I also tossed in a coiled cable... the micro controller will store that data in flash so it will stay at that setting until you change it again... I'm also going to throw in a setup mode so if you press both volume buttons and hold them down so you can change the duration of the beeps.

It sounds like we just convinced you to make a very expensive accessory when it only started out as a button. :-) That's the Red community for ya!

I want the wireless version with custom colored anodizing and a footage readout. ;-)

hehe.. you know what they say... a camel is a horse designed by committee. In actuality, the changes are adding a bit to the cost but like Jim we are making these for ourselves too. It only makes sense to make it right.

Sorry this is so late, It took a little longer to get sorted out than I expected...
Here's the video of the working proto... the boards and machined housings will be here by the end of the week so I will be able to show a finished design then.

I usually wouldn't show something this nasty looking but I wanted to get your feedback on the functionality to make sure its what you were all asking for. Let me know if the tone is unpleasant ;)

Curt ! I'm impressed. Could the first beep be a bit longer ? The tone is good or I could go a bit lower in pitch. Pretty fricking' happy about this right now.

Sure. I'm thinking I'll spend some time on a slick setup routine that will allow you to change the duration and pitch of the beeps... that shouldn't be too hard to do.

Curt what is the camera port this goes into? How many of these ports are there and do you possibly see the need for a splitter box to be able to run more accessories?

Very, very nice work. Can you make the beep sound like a soundstage bell (ha)?

It plugs into the top or bottom aux connectors in the back of the camera. You could also plug it into the front B4 connector but it would only work as a button (no beep or led functionality). At some point we could make a splitter or some sort but I'm not sure how many people are actually using those ports to begin with.

Can you find a link to the soundstage bell? I could try to emulate it. Maybe we can toss in some easter eggs and have the option to use pacman, tetris, and mario bros sounds ;)

Sound stage bell was just a joke but I am sure you got that. Sound stage bells are simply fire alarm bells that they hook up to a live button.

Sounds like a splitter box is not really needed with all the extra ports.

Pacman, tetris Mario bro's- maybe asteroids also (ha).

This is a really cool product Curt, I'm pumped about it. By the way you will have to let me take you out for a beer at NAB.

Hi Curt, it looks like a great little simple product. Did you say it will include a gpi trigger for ramping and timelapse? If not could a version that has the option be created? Perhaps a lock switch on the left of the unit to toggle between gpi trigger and record mode. Being able to switch to the gpi trigger once recording would be essential also. I know this will add more to the cost again but would make for a more worthwhile product in my mind.

Cheers
Paul

CVB, how hard would it be for this to do a low voltage warning ? I'm going to be using block batts some of the time and sometimes power from non red batts ( jobs where I have to fly somewhere ) Seems like you've already got the piezo... How about it ?

That is an EXCELLENT idea!!!

Someone has already said the 12v output is unregulated, so it should reflect pretty well the voltage the camera is seeing.

Red hasn't committed to fixing the non-red battery problems (and if you ask they call you an ass) so this is a great opportunity to build the must-have accessory. I'll buy one to keep in my AC kit and I'm not even buying a camera.

Do it, CVB!!!!

This is great Matt. Your brain more better then us others brain.

Are you thinking the voltave meter incorporated right into the button itself? I think this would be the best option myself. I see 99% of people that buy the button putting velcro on it and pretty much leaving this button stuck on the camera all the time. This is how valuable an item it is. Now if it was just a little bigger with a voltage meter lcd or screen it would be perfect. If the screen idea would ballon the price to high a green, yellow, red light system would also be good. I am thinking solid green (good voltage), solid yellow (you have 5 or so minutes so finish take and you better start thinking of swapping soon), flashing yellow (look dummy swap that battery), red (you are up shit creek real soon). There may be some people with a much better idea on how to do this so please add your thoughts.

I've already tried it in the gpi trigger... works fine its just that the beeps get really annoying. I'm going to have a button sequence where you can change modes so the unit will be better suited for trigger/ramping mode.

Darren... LCD = a bad idea from a cost perspective and delivery schedule perspective. I could use a single multi color led and follow the same notification scheme that you mentioned. I'll have to look into the complexity of determining the time left on the battery for a given voltage but it seems like a possibility... the big variables are how much other doodads plugged into the battery/camera affect the battery life.

This would be a great option. I just sent you an important email Curt, did you get it?
