  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well, the REDmote is meant to be used away from the camera. So I assume in most situations you will NOT see the REDmote attached to the camera. Just a general observation.

The REDmotes are working great. However, they are not neccessary in every application. Just yesterday, when I shot the Scarlet around NAB, we we were fiddling around with the REDmote...letting my assistant change settings and click the RUN/STOP without a single problem. I don't think they are done with them, however, the units I have used have been working just great...

I never realized from all your posts that you were such a youngin… Props to you man I thoroughly enjoyed the video and I’m looking forward to seeing some of those shots you were getting with the Scarlet. Keep up the good work!
 
Great video.
It's fun to see over the internet that A LOT of people believe Scarlet is a Vaporware and all those "working Scarlet videos" are juste meant to be technical demos for Red technology. It seems a lot of those people think Red will never release it, which makes me think "so I won't find any "out of stock" message when I will be the "only one" to buy it" :laugh:

If I recall correctly, when RED announced Scarlet S35 would be upgraded to EPIC-S you were in doubt if you should go for the EPIC-S instead of the Scarlet Fixed, after all your experience with EPIC-M and now with Scarlet Fixed, are you still in doubt?

Joseph, thanks for the videos.

did you pay much attention to the Scarlet's auto-focus? i have a couple of Sony camera where, unless I'm outside or under set lights, the autofocus is pretty useless because they both constantly "search" for focus every couple of seconds. I'm guessing you've experienced similar with your Z1. basically, any time i'm in low light i can't use auto focus at all. did you experience any of that with the Scarlet or did it hold pretty well?

That's good to hear. I was saving my money for Scarlet S35, but when it got upgraded to Epic-S it moved out of my price range, my attention then shifted to the scarlet fixed, and the more I looked at it, and read about it, the more I became convinced that this camera suits me perfectly. I am glad to hear that you (and also Ketch) are so impressed by scarlet, it only convinces me more that scarlet fixed is the way to go for me.
 
I work as camera op for a production house. Earlier this week we had a meeting regardless new project we are supposed to film this summer and fall for one of the cable networks. I think RED is missing the boat with Scarlet and the market is changing at the moment to the point that this camera will be obsolete before it is released. Last year my boss was interested in the camera, as it would fit the bill- cost vs size vs picture quality. At the moment there are some game changers, like new Hyperdeck for #345 (cheap) or CD Gemini (still half the price of Cinedek) or Sidekick!!! Gee, we will have to spend just a fraction of money to upgrade all of our cameras into uncompressed/ProRes formats. We can use all the lenses, standard 12V batteries and none of the proprietary crap.
It's really hard to take RED serious as far as company. The web page is not updated and the PR is on parr with a garage operation, where the information is leaking through back channels instead of official press releases. I mean this camera is still as a working prototype, not even a pre production unit. A few seconds of looped footage doesn't qualify as something people can judge the quality either.

You can call it anything you want Joseph, point is that you truly deserve to have one, so when that time comes,
the name will matter very little, but will matter what you do with it, how you do it, and how you share what you do with it,
my only wish his that in return for your companionship and your great assistance in such a short time, that I have past on to you something,
no matter how little, that would serve you well in life... ;)
 
I gotta say.. it really pisses me off when I read people hijacking this thread and attacking Joseph over our delays etc... Leave the guy alone..

He doesn't work for RED and has nothing to do with Japan, delays, price increases, etc. etc. etc. Me and Jim leant him a Scarlet to have some fun with.. because he deserved it. Simple as that.

Not quite so cheap when you consider the cost of SSDs and the size of 10 bit uncompressed footage - 10gb a minute roughly according to the BlackMagic reps I spoke to at NAB. So roughly $1000 for an hours worth of footage? Not saying it's not an option, but I wouldn't immediately consider that a cheap option. And of course it's 1080p.

The CD Gemini isn't available as far as I know, and the Sidekick is limited to ProRes as well as 1080p.

And you will not have Redcode Raw, you'll still be limited to 1080p, you'll have a linear codec, less dynamic range, you'll still be going through a presumably inferior DSP, and if you're on any number of prosumer cameras your SDI output may actually only be 8bit.

While there may be available options that work for your needs right now that doesn't mean it's the same thing.
Apples and oranges.
