  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

good one

good one

I don't mean to be offensive but come on.. you have to laugh at yourself for this one Jim...

Everything moves fast around here... stay tuned.

Jim

For those of us who have been anxiously awaiting the scarlet release since it was first mentioned at NAB... dealing with crappy canon line math and compression problems... saying that things move fast is.. well.. enough said.

Here's to hoping that things will move fast NOW and that I'll be a scarlet owner in 2011!

So, how about that update? :)

I think Jim said things were always going fast at RED, which most of us dont see as we are just getting a small peek inside via this forum.

What they are building is amazingly complex, and has to be 100% rock-solid so just because we on the outside don't see the thousands of tasks that continually have to be juggled doesn't mean things aren't moving.

I think there is, in this case, a difference between moving fast and being behind schedule. RED have been moving at light speed on tech and developments but due to revisions in product lines (well you know what has happened the last few years) and bug issues it has put them back. Consider though what RED have managed to achieve in a little over four years. That my friend moving quick.

Large companies like Sony or Canon et al either were unable to do what RED have managed to do, or know how, just it doesn't suit them and their business models to release it yet. RED is that wildcard. I like to think of RED as slightly different. They are a company that came at the goal of Jim's from way on the Leftfield. Didn't hire all the usual suspects - and they managed to develop a high resolution digital cinema camera in a few years. Like Nick commented, this is different to the R1. It is a camera that will perform from day one without hiccups. No beta release.

Like Jim says...things move fast. Its the sum of the parts that move and develop fast, the whole then becomes something unprecedented. I, obviously understand the frustration -as I am sure so do RED. It'll be ready when its ready.

RED is like RedRum 1973 grand national against the Australian chaser Crisp.

Crisp just started sway from side to side because he had been on his own for so long Redrum just ploughed forward.

I'm actually very interested in seeing footage from Scarlet 2/3 Int... "Cinema" with the Voigtlaender 25mm F0.95 lens that came out. Problem is that it is a Micro 4/3 mount for that prime.
*Still Hoping*

Considering none of us have ANY idea what it actually takes to do what RED are doing, I'd say that's an incredibly... bold... statement. (And that's being polite).

Speed, in this case, is relative. A McDonald's meal is ready in 3 minutes but is hardly "fine dining" Go out to a nice restaurant for a 10 course degustation and you're waiting hours until you're finally finished.

No one is forcing you to put up with Canon cameras. There are plenty of alternatives. Find one.

Fantastic lens,,, but wont it be over 100mm eqv. on the 2/3"?

Yeah, more or less portrait length. And apparently it has that wide aperture glow. Not overly sharp wide open and softer in the corners. Super sharp once you start stopping down. Among lenses I've used it sounds a lot like a Nikon 85 f/1.4D (apparently the new G is sharper in the corners, but does not render the same way - some say a step backwards for portraits). So for 2/3 cinema users it could definitely have a role. T̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶e̶e̶d̶ ̶a̶ ̶d̶u̶m̶b̶ ̶a̶d̶a̶p̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶a̶t̶t̶a̶c̶h̶ ̶v̶i̶a̶ ̶a̶ ̶R̶E̶D̶ ̶N̶i̶k̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶o̶u̶n̶t̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶r̶d̶ ̶p̶a̶r̶t̶y̶ ̶s̶h̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶g̶o̶o̶d̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶a̶r̶o̶u̶n̶d̶ ̶$̶2̶0̶0̶.̶

edit: Sorry, wasn't thinking. The mount to sensor distance in m4/3 is less than Nikon F so you would need a RED m4/3 adapter plate. Though if RED allowed it and it was dumb, it seems a third party could make that pretty cheap, too.

The 25/0.95 is selling fast. Cameraquest, the U.S. dealer has pre-sold their second shipment, which is supposed to arrive later this month. Consensus seems to be a lot of video shooters are snapping them up. I've encouraged Stephen Gandy at Cameraquest to pressure Mr. Kobayashi of Cosina Voigtlander to expand his m4/3 line in the wide and ultrafast direction - as that is where there is a need. For Scarlet Cinema users the choice would be between a RED-designed manual mini-prime and a well-made (for stills-so clicking aperture, no built-in ff gear) manual prime that is 1-2 stops faster - both at about the same price.

But tying this back to RED - I don't see why they would need to make a smart m4/3 mount (or a dumb one) since there are so few lenses worth using. In fact, this is the only one that comes to mind. The Olympus f/2's in regular 4/3 are also good, but that's a different mount.

We haven't gotten the announcement yet, did we? Just making sure, that I didn't missed it. Boy, can't wait to see, what's cooking. Still not sure which camera I'm getting.

fixed-lens-scarlet-first-working-pic.jpg

I'm currently at Red Studios helping with the Santa Fe 3d Workshop with Geoff Boyle. Just as I am sitting there...in comes Jarred with a WORKING Red Scarlet 8X fixed camera! Naturally I was dying to hold the camera. As Jarred passed it to me, he told me I was the first public person to hold a working Red Scarlet. Let me tell you folks, it is real and is working. The Scarlet I was holding had the 5inch lcd touchscreen. The lens gear which can be set to zoom, iris or focus is buttery smooth. QUALITY. The electronic zoom works like a charm. I used the up-down rocker on the camera to zoom in on a Jeep in the parking lot (though I was "Mr. Shakey" due to the sheer excitement of finally getting to hold the Red Scarlet.) Justin O'Neill and I got to see it for a mere brief moment and off it went back to the vault. This should be comforting to those who may fear that RED wouldn't have time for the Scarlet with all the Epic buzz going on. This gives me more confidence that the Red Scarlet is definitely around the corner. I have been really lucky to have held both the Epic and Scarlet. The Scarlet is lighter in weight than the Epic even with the fixed lens. This is due to the Scarlet body being more narrow. The weight felt very good and the camera felt rugged. Touch screen controls were functional. Video Coming soon.

Video Coming Soon.

Red is moving so close to the speed of light that relativity effects have taken hold. :thumbup1:

I'm excited again...

I'm praying it will still be within my budget...

Thank You Michael and Fire Chief from Jarred Land for this fantastic picture and info. The camera looks pretty smooth to me. Just need to be patient for a few more month to learn about the specs and the pricing on all of the options, like Epic S, M, X, Scarlett 8x, Scarlet Int. Is there anything else?
Also, how do I attach my avatar to my posts?
