  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

The point is that 2/3" has similar DOF characteristics to standard 16mm film. In every other respect, sensitivity, resolution, dynamic range, I expect Scarlet 2/3" will outperform S16mm film. The high end HD cameras come very close to doing so now.

....
Which is why I think your Epic-M program is important. Most of us will not be able to afford it, but at least Epic will be out in the world in a select few's hands and will be shooting and getting the world drooling.

For most of us it will be somewhat like reading a menu in a restaurant whilst your neighbor has his food served. We know that something will be coming our way and are willing to wait it out. Which is much more preferable to a full restaurant, everybody ordering but nobody eating... people get up and start to leave at that point.

...
Analogies are great tools for promoting understanding. IMO, yours is top notch.

i had a friend at SCAD who had to do a short on 16mm film. he told me about the experience and how great it felt working with film; he loved the look and feel of it. but he said not being able to 'see' what he was shooting right away and having his film developed made the whole task very daunting and expensive. i am waiting so very patiently for the fixed lens Scarlet so I can have a great camera for personal artistic projects and short films. once i get familiar with the Red process i'll eventually upgrade to an Epic for larger projects.

Definite price and definite release date no more if's may be's subject to change, the time has come to make good before the new year to kill all the doubters!

I just finished a 16mm production. It was horrendous. Granted the Eclair ACL just isn't a SR3, but the whole process was just bad. Ergonomics of the cameras just aren't that good. Getting film to the bay area, shipping it to the lab in LA, then getting it back and through a telecine and it's just not worth that hassle. All the while a week goes by before you start editing.

I'm a big fan of quick turnaround shoots. With digital, the editor is putting a cut together on location, when the editor is not wrangling data.

I'd rather shoot on dSLR any, over 16mm. However Epic-S is the camera for me. Maybe I'll get a scarlet just as an option.

Is the fixed lens equipped with a servo zoom?

If so can I lock 2 of them together and get them to track?

Yes, full servo control of zoom, focus and iris. Don't know how precise tracking and control can be yet, but I bet it will be very precise.

Scarlet Fixed looks interesting. I'm wondering if testing builds of the Scarlet 8X will be available to buyers ?

Since it has been said that a red mote can control multiple cameras and it has also been said that the red mote pro can be set to wireless control of various lens functions including focus and zoom, then:

If these functions and lenses are very precise and or offsets can be set, then the fixed will be utterly fantastic for 3d work. Small size, no external motors, leaning toward extra dof, has the makings to be the smallest most capable 3d config we have ever seen.

Very excited to purchase a Scarlet (whether S35 Epic Light or the 2/3" depending on price) I'll buy both SSD REDSTATION REDMAGS when available as I'm an editor first. Will there be SSD modules for the Scarlet 2/3" in addition to the others? I imagine that's the medium all impending cameras will employ, so apologies if this topic has been covered.

SSD will be the only media module for Scarlet 2/3". There will be a CF adapter for the SSD module if you still want to use those. There will also be an adapter to plug in the old RED drives.

Yes! so SSD will be standard on Scarlet 2/3 fixed? Great!!!

Justin - that doesn't sound accurate to me but I may have missed something. Since the data rate for Scarlet 2/3" (at 3K max) is quite a bit less than Epic and RED ONE, I thought the folks at RED had said that CF would still be a viable option for Scarlet 2/3 and that there would be a CF module. If you get a second, can you point to where this is clarified? It would, obviously, be nice to get clear. (Of course, if a RED team member would chime in, that would be great, too!) Thanks.
