Scarlet...

All cameras have their inherent flaws and strengths. They dictate how you shoot, frame and film with them. They give every camera a "look" not in the sense of picture but how a cinematographer uses the design to aid in the storytelling.

A Scarlet without HDR it would give the camera it's own look and shape to approaching storytelling from the Epic and Red. I like that idea

Question anyone?

Question anyone?

Haven't been following to closely for awhile.. Question?

Does the Scarlet have RAMPING capabilities now or higher frame rates since this would be a good time too implement with the new boards that will handle the new HDRx™?

I'm kind of in the camp with others who have posted here regarding product differentiation.
If the fixed Scarlet is to incorporate so many of the high end features of the Epic X, then what will be gained by spending many thousands more, especially when the PL-mount Scarlet 35 is released? It goes back to the old "good enough" debate.
As the future owner of 2 Epic-X cameras, running a micro rental house with Reds, Epics, Alexa, and Panasonic, I worry about the blurring of product lines here.
Good for the indie kids though!
Cheers,
Harry

Like most everyone I'm happy about the HDR, but unhappy about the delay. (and I'm OK with the $1000 price hike)

I have an MX RED 1 and am going to get the EPIC.

But I'm really looking forward to purchasing a SCARLET as well.

I feel like RED could endlessly design the SCARLET. There are always going to be updates, better features, and new aspects you can add to the SCARLET. "There's always room for improvement." I'm sure something else will inspire the RED Team in 2011 and they will want to add that to the SCARLET as well, that means another delay...

But it means a better product too. And, since RED has never let me down, I trust their decisions and just wait in anticipation.

I'm happy to hear this news...

I know it's too soon to say, but was curious if you had any ballpark on what kind of DR we might expect on an HDRx Scarlet? Perhaps you have a rough idea of Scarlet's current DR from prototypes...

Well I voted no on the inclusion solely because of the concern over a delay. If the delay is insignificant, then, well, fantastic!

not so sure if that is a good think ... don't get me wrong the HDR feature is great and will be a pro killer feature that make the epic stand out all the campaigners ... but maybe that 1k cash might be just 1k too much for an "entry-level" RED to target the DSLR & AF101 users-market ... just saying ...

You shouldn't have to. EPIC will have a lot of headroom to grow. Scarlet will be operating at the top end of its performance envelope.

what does that mean? "headroom to grow"? -

this isn't RED ONE, designed for continuous firmware upgrades.

RED has already stated that their sensor selection for EPIC will put some restrictions on their ability to upgrade (faster start-up times, less upgradeability, I believe was the stated trade-off) -

Future upgrades will require the purchase of a new brain.

I wonder what Monstro with super enhanced HDRx mode will introduce into the future of imaging. Crazy. Just crazy.

Thank you for adding HDR to the Scarlet! I will gladly pay the extra grand. Now I don't want to jump the gun here, but since you're already adding some new boards and power to the Scarlet to handle HDR, why not increase Scarlet's fps to 96 also?? Think about it maybe?? haha :) If not it's cool. I'm planning on buying the Scarlet, and renting the Epic if a client wants slow mo.

Guys, those extra 6 stops are gonna save you much more than 1000$ on every important job in time and lighting stuff.

I just do this for fun. It's not my job. But when I want to do it, I want dot o it good with a good camera. Not with a DSLR...

Im curious, as others have asked...with this addition it now seems that Scarlet s35 will be almost identical (except for overcranking) to EpicX, for 1/4 the price. What are your thoughts on this Jim? Am I missing something here? Or is simply that the overcranking is what comprises 75% of the cost of EpicX? Not complaining at all (I'm still Epic #27!), just trying to understand what's coming down the pipeline.

I'm happy. No problems with the delay of Scarlet.

Just give me my two Epic! :-)

does this mean EPIC is near???

This is great news! Gosh, a few graduated neutral density glass filters by Schneider Optics would go soaring past the $1k mark with a few clicks.. This is VERY good news and is going to be of tremendous value.. Scarlet wants to come home, NOW!

I know this thread is about Scarlet and therefore what I'm saying won't be popular BUT when you actually compare them it looks wrong!

Scarlet S35 is $7000

Epic is $28,000

So what does the extra $21,000 buy you?

A higher data rate, 250 v 100 MB's, higher frame rate and ramping. Am I missing anything else?

Scarlet's higher frame rates will already be more than adequate for 90% of users and the higher data rate will be invisible to most viewers.

So, who in their right mind would pay the extra $21,000? As an existing Red owner I'll take the stage three option BUT if I was a new buyer I would not be going for Epic. Scarlet is going to kill our rental margins completely.

While I'm delighted for all the non Red owners who are about the pick up the bargain of the century, as an existing Red One owner it doesn't sit right with me.

Sorry, don't mean to sound negative here, we are totally behind Red and we're excited about future releases and developments BUT I really think Red need to MUCH better differentiate Epic from Scarlet.

Rant over. :attention9ha:
