  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reduser noise, Professionals, and finding the information you want

@Dominique

Would you mind to share some examples of the work you are doing?
Maybe we might join forces.

Following the discussion, I really do not see the problem of having to much contributors, but having any of them at all. There are about 5 other pages out there, that are trying to do the same thing, but nobody knows them.

It seems, that it comes down to some sort of "official" redwiki, where a summary of the forum's info would be gathered. Again without an official statement from RED, i do not see that happening. People just love to hang around here, even with the noise :sarcasm:

I would be willing (as would other serious REDusers I hope) to pay a subscription to such a site/forum.
It would root out most of the BS if you had to shell out $20 for a year. It would also pay for the time invested. It would be a pro thing and all things used for our profession should be paid for.

I will pay 250$ a year for a full coverage of Red knowledge on set, cinematography and post-production, etc. by experts.

Thats what it cost me to be member of my local union and they do nothing for me and thats what it cost me to be subsribe to a daily news of the audio-visual local market and be listed as a company in their annual book and i'm sure it do nothing THAT good to what i really need in my business.

I feel a subscription is not the best way to go. The reasoning is newbys who might be considering red as a possibility (especially low budget producers) will be less inclined to join if they are just looking for info. The system has to be open. I think its much better to either make money from banners or have the site sponsored by red and maybe other companies... Just make sure there is a strong stipulation that sponsorship does not give the sponsor rights to changing information to their favour or that the information will benefit them in any way, just notably a sponsor banner or advertising.
Considering the new roll out... this kind of resource will be more important day by day going towards the newer models. First things first we need to get the attention of RED and see where they stand and what they can offer. If that is a no go then maybe we can have a donate thing happening... I just can't see this really evolving unless the person has a strong motivational factors involved. It's ironic because some of the most knowledgeable people on these boards do spend a lot of time providing answers and their energy is best spent this way, because to find their answers may take 2 hours of wading. The problem is not just the crap but also the way forums are presented... For instance a thread on onset monitors could have been there in june but is now buried and a search on monitors won't help you... Perhaps the contributers can have bios or something to help with their marketing? I don't think it should be one person who writes everything. Specialists in their field. The main reason i see contributers not getting involved is because of commitment... It would be good to at least have them available to proof read...
For me the ideal would be to have these people being put into front of line for new products because this will give a lot of motivation and they would be rewarded for ultimately giving to the community. Thats a Win Win situation...

www.redwiki.org

I started www.RedWiki.org some time ago with the hope of collating much of the information and left it alone for a while. To my surprise a number of people have added information to it but it's not quite enough still. There is great swathes of information that haven't been added.

Like Ian I had a bunch of problems with spam and had to back date the site and change it to registered users only.

It has the ability to make moderators that can lock pages etc. I'm more than happy for a bunch of people who are keen RedUsers to be made mods of the Wiki to improve it. I simply don't have the time to keep it up to date.

I also sent a link to Jarred and Brook a while ago in the hope of tying it into RedUser a bit more but it didn't come to anything at the time. Unless the thing is official I think it's always difficult to get off the ground as I'm sure Ian will testify.

A Wiki is only good if everyone knows about it, relies upon it and adds to it.

I'm not knowledgeable enough but i can give you a list of names to start with...
1. sanjin - still lenses, ims, lens tests - maybe leica would sponsor him?

2. David Mullen - Red for high level film production. DI, projection, getting the most from the sensor etc..

3. Aquavideored260 - birgermount, underwater

4. mitch gross - film production accessories - higher end

5. Mark L pederson - anything but stock speculation...

6. Jannard- Introduction (He's too busy building cameras to do any more) better time spent than designing blings...

7. nattress - nothing, he needs to code...

So many others whose names elude me for now (and sorry for misspellings I may have had)

Hey all-

It would be difficult for RED to put out manuals for their products, as everything changes so quickly and we want them putting their energy into building new cameras.

This I have a hard time swallowing. As Red continues to change, do they not document what they are doing? I would assume so, therefore how difficult is it to officially communicate this directly to the community in an organized fashion such as a manual? It would seem like a modest staff could manage a technical communication department that covers not only Red hardware but workflow as well.

It's worth mentioning that Red is not only a hardware company, they are in fact a software company too. The camera itself runs on software, and Red has created software offerings for post production workflow as well, however un-finished, un-supported or un-spoken about. I was very disappointed by the December 3rd announcements having nothing to do with Redcine or other software updates or workflow improvements, no announcement about the vision of that division of Red.

In this forum, my questions and suggestions feel like they are getting lost in the abyss. I'm all for a Red Wiki style information interface, but I believe it's in the communities best interest, and Red's, for that to come from Red itself and be 100% vetted information that supports both production and post.

Absolutely, positively!

It's some sort of cosmic strangeness that Red does not seem to have a technical writer to post coherent, surmise-killing documents on Red products in a read-only forum here or on the Red site.

Jim or someone else speaking for Red will post a tidbit of information which is then followed by a smothering blanket of posts, some of which can charitably labeled "distracting." Then we are forced to wade through dozens or even hundreds of posts hoping to glean a nugget of actual fact from Red.

I know many find this treasure hunt scheme entertaining; many of us do not.

I'm not crazy about the "Wiki" idea; I want my information directly from Red.

It's fantastic that Jim takes the time to interact with us here at RedUser; I just wish all his posts were in one read-only forum.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Dont worry.. Big Jon is working on a pretty detailed FAQ that will cut through the bull and contain all the new important news.. that should help alot.

Big Jon.. Thanks for what you are doing..

Rather than pdf style which is very unfriendly to computers can you do a html style with everything linked and cross referenced so finding info is super quick.

The key is great, well thought out indexing...

Once you have this, everything, including future updates will become so much easier for you and easier for people to access information.

What we really need is a wiki that is a) hosted on RED and b) gets frequently announced here on Reduser and on the RED.com homepage

I completely agree.

- a long forum thread, when it dies down, could be distilled into a wiki article - it's a fairly natural progression
- we use a wiki at my work (IT department for a major healthcare organization) and it is the only way to keep relevant information up to date
- the accuracy of a wiki is proportional to the traffic, so it needs to be a permanent section of the official RED web site
- vandalism and misinformation no more likely than in these here forums
- but don't let people edit unless they are registered (i.e., no anonymous edits)
- a few users will arise voluntarily and will help keep the edits in line --- probably the same people who contribute effectively in these forums
- with wiki software like MediaWiki (same as is used for Wikipedia) each edit is logged, so you can always undo, and you can trace vandals and misinformed writers

The fear of rampant vandalism is understandable but it happens a lot less than you would guess, especially if you require registration and boot bad people.

I offered this to them about a month ago but haven't gotten anywhere. My girlfriend is a published technical writer and has been for a long time and when she takes on a project she does it to the max. She will live the project to the point where she will know more than most people who are developing it. She would bust ass with her eyes closed on a project like this.

Absolutely, positively!

Spike, I've no doubt she would do an excellent job.

The best owner's manual I've ever read was written by Robert Goodman, author of the VariCam guides. I consider it essential for VariCam shooters.

Quite early on I suggest that Red contact Mr. Goodman to develop a guide for the Red, but received faint support for the idea.

I'd like someone like Mr. Goodman to act as a Red owners ombudsman, to keep updated a list of features, procedures, and bugs with work-arounds. Someone savvy enough to anticipate the frequently asked questions and keep the answers updated in one easy to access place.

Furthermore, I'd like someone to honestly answer the questions that seem to disappear in the ether. I don't mind the answer being "no" or "not yet determined;" what bothers me, and others I'm certain, is silence. It leads to wild speculation and misinformation.

For example, take the issue of upgrading Epic X to Monstro; I've read posts here saying that this would happen, although I don't believe Red has ever stated this. I don't want to drive off into a tangent, but buying a new Brain (camera, as far as I'm concerned) is not an "upgrade;" it's a new camera.

Back on point, I fear any Wiki-like solution would be subject to all sorts of misinformation. Only a Red or Red-blessed solution is completely trustworthy.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

On Topic...

On Topic...

As a foot note to my thoughts already expressed here on this thread, I find it odd that this pertinate and well thought out thread attempting to address concerns about finding current and vetted information, gets moved from Red Discussion to "Off Topic".
