I wouldn't worry about it. You will have a whole year of Epic rentals before scarlet is released.

You win some, you lose some. It would be great if HDRx was offered as an option for the extra $1000. Not that $1000 is a huge increase, but when the original concept of the camera was 3K for $3K, then it increases to $3750, then $4750, now $5750, it becomes a bit disheartening for those of us who have major budget constraints. Don't get me wrong what RED is offering for $5750 is amazing, but I would have gladly taken the original $3750 Scarlet back then than the one that is being offered in the unforeseeable future. May have to hold off or back out now, but hopefully finances improve and Scarlet becomes an option once again in the future.

That's one price increase too many. No Scarlet for me.

Sooooooooooooo disappointed.

This is still really cheap for such a high-end camera. RED is pushing the limits for what's possible.

Motion HDR in a camera for under $10.000 is just astonishing anyways.

No argument from me that Scarlet + HDRx is WORTH another $1000. I just don't have it.

Nice! That S35 is looking better with every passing day. Waiting doesn't seem so bad.

All Red had to do with Scarlet to COMPLETELY dominate the "pro-sumer" lower end of the market (EX1, 5D territory) was produce a camera that shot 1080p in RAW at 50MB's, that offered decent dynamic range, say 10-11 stops, with the ability to shoot at up to 60fps.

Job done, a simpler camera to produce and costs kept down - nothing in the market from Sony, Panasonic, Nikon or Canon would have had a look in.

They could have saved a few sexy "extras" for Scarlet 2 etc.

Can't believe it BUT I'm actually complaining about Red making Scarlet too good!!! I can't believe it, but it's true. :mad2:

You've made Scarlet potentially SO good, Epic may be left stranded.

Scott

Scott,
Your point about the rental market is spot on. I'm very concerned that the extra $21,000 (and whatever features that buys you) will be meaningless in an era of shrinking budgets.
I'm worried that S35 Scarlet will set the rental bar low, and Epic will follow...
Cheers,
Harry

For those asking about EasyHDR™™™™™™™:

If we did this, Scarlet could have both EasyHDR™™™™™™ at 30fps and HDRx™™™™™™ to 60fps.

About ramping on Scarlet from the “Scarlet for beginners sticky”:

The fixed and cinema Scarlets have essentially the same technical capabilities.
  • They can shoot 3K (3072x1728) RAW up to 120 fps or Full Frame 1080p RGB up to 30 fps.
  • They offer 16:9, 2:1, and 2.4:1 aspect ratios.
  • Both provide for Time Lapse and Ramping (changing frames per second on the fly).
  • Both use REDCODE 42 to encode.

Some of these specs have changed for the better, but does anyone know where the info came from that is leading people to believe that ramping is now not possible?

And for those worried about Scarlet cannibalizing the EPIC market, if RED isn’t worried about it why are you?

You know, as the current Scarlet continues to move up-market, maybe they should add another model in below it...

But, Scott... RED doesn't make "simpler" cameras... :) They try to make the best... and, since they don't have giganto marketing budgets and huge infrastructures like the other guys, they kinda have to in order to compete...

p.s. EPIC has tons going for it. Larger sensor, 5k resolution, higher data rates, higher framerates (at equivalent res), etc, etc... It is the no-compromise, professional tool.

Was one of the original specs info.

As exciting I am for HDRx™ in the Scarlet-which I definitely will use when (if) it ever gets in my hands, I still wish I could choose to have it or not-don't mind the price (actually is really reasonable) just hate another delay.
Originally I was planning to shoot a film early next year with the Scarlet, and since the Scarlet is behind the Epic, we decided to shoot with the Epic since it would be released first. And since there's still no news on a release date for the Epic it looks like it'll be shot with an M-X. We have a couple WW2 battle scenes which would look amazing if shot with the Epic-5k 120fps=AWESOME, I know it would look great with an M-X if we wind up shooting with a Red instead.:gun:

I'd pay the extra $1000 for the Scarlet to be released this year! Really not looking forward for another delay...

Jason, Scarlet s35 is supposed to be the same sensor and also 5k

I know this thread is about Scarlet and therefore what I'm saying won't be popular BUT when you actually compare them it looks wrong!

Scarlet S35 is $7000

Epic is $28,000

So what does the extra $21,000 buy you?

A higher data rate, 250 v 100 MB's, higher frame rate and ramping. Am I missing anything else?

Scarlet's higher frame rates will already be more than adequate for 90% of users and the higher data rate will be invisible to most viewers.

So, who in their right mind would pay the extra $21,000? As an existing Red owner I'll take the stage three option BUT if I was a new buyer I would not be going for Epic. Scarlet is going to kill our rental margins completely.

While I'm delighted for all the non Red owners who are about the pick up the bargain of the century, as an existing Red One owner it doesn't sit right with me.

Sorry, don't mean to sound negative here, we are totally behind Red and we're excited about future releases and developments BUT I really think Red need to MUCH better differentiate Epic from Scarlet.

Rant over. :attention9ha:

Scott

are you really asking them to hobble scarlet ? then they would be sony , canon and panasonic not red. 5k at 120fps probably is worth 21k.

Was one of the original specs info.

Exactly. They have really only increased the specs since, so why would this now not be available? I was just wondering if they had actually said somewhere that this has changed. Given the way RED works I just don’t see the fact that they have increased specs since that post means that they have removed the feature in the process.
