  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W Compression Spec Change

I see that the documents have been updated in march. I still see 5:1 for 5kFF 24fps and 9:1 for 48fps 5kFF. Is it still 4:1 and 8:1? Any scarlet-w owner?
 
According to the UI on my Scarlet-W running 6.2.55, minimum compression settings for 5KFF are:

5K - 23.98fps - RC 5:1
5K - 29.97fps - RC 6:1
5K - 47.96fps - RC 9:1
5K - 49.96fps - RC 9:1

The thing is the camera will not tell you if it uses 4:1 as Brent explained. But if you choose 4:1 anyway in the list, and if, then, 5:1 appears in yellow instead of white, it means it's 4:1. So can you confirm that this process doesn't work? Thanx
 
Comparing Redcode specs of EPIC-MX and Scarlet-W I've found the next:

(1st - Epic-mx, 2nd - Scarlet-w):
5K 25fps - 1:3 - 1:5
4k 100fps - 1:8 - 1:11
2k 210fps - 1:5 - 1:7


Does it mean compression of Epic-X is still better of Scarlet-w? To my mind, comparing the prices for used Epics-MX and new Scarlet-w, Epics look more attractive for VFX. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Dragon REDCODE is better than MX REDCODE (compression).
 
From what I understand the yellow color indicates that the selected Redcode is not possible given the current record settings. When this happens the lowest possible Redcode is selected and appears in yellow. I checked what you suggested on my camera and 5:1 does appear in yellow after you select 4:1 for 5K 23.98fps, but I'm not confident that this indicates what you suggest.

I do find the idea very odd that 5:1 potentially doesn't mean the same thing on different RED cameras, especially within the same DSMC2 lineup. If this is in fact the case it seems a rethinking of this convention is in order by RED. Consistency of results is so important in high end production (as with almost any high end product or service).

This is the new "Target REDCODE" feature. Your target REDCODE has been set to 3:1 or 5:1 (whichever you selected) but the actual REDCODE is currently limited to 6:1 based on other settings. Since the actual REDCODE does not match your target it is shown in yellow. If you bring down the REDCODE spinner your target REDCODE will be the default value.

In the past you would be able to set the REDCODE to 3:1 or 5:1 only to be let-down by an annoying dialog that popped up when you tried to record informing you that the camera needs to set it lower.
 
What I do to ensure I always shoot on the lowest redcode compression mode is:

1. Eject redmag
2. Set compression to 3:1
3. Insert redmag
4. compresson ratio font changes to yellow

From that point forward, compression is always the maximum lowest it can be for whatever framerate is selected.

Granted, I do this on DSMC1 bodies.
Try it out on DSMC2 and see if it works for you.

The scarlet-W is 140MB/s. It can't do pure 4:1 by a super small amount. But Red allowed it to do 4.1:1 because 5:1 is bringing the datarate far less than the 140MB/s announced. The camera is set to tell pure whole number redcodes. So 5:1 is 5:1, no problem, it's displayed in white on the screen, but if you force it to use 4:1 it will in fact be 4.1:1 compression. I guess you could try by selecting it, shoot something, select 5:1, shoot the same image, and compare the size of each. Or maybe in the metadata of redcine-x if it works differently than the camera UI and shows "4:1" or "4.1:1". That's great anyway.

Sorry for my stupid question but I'm prepare myself for purchasing S-W and still do not understand one moment: there is red official calculations http://www.red.com/tools/recording-time
and based on it (if we choose Weapon MG as Refference) S-W has to have solid 4:1 compression ratio at 25 fps (133 MB/s) and there is still a little bit more room for lower rates (in yellow numbers as Brent say)
