  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W Compression Spec Change

I think you will find 50 fps will look amazing Nathan, if more fps is needed 4.5 k still allows a TON of room to work with in post. I have been shooting 40 fps when i need slow motion. I could see needing a bit more with sports stuff. Long story short I think you will still have a SICK camera on your hands

I agree 100%, which is why I'm not losing my shit here. :)

The guys at Red have outdone themselves regardless of the max frame rates or ratios. At the end of the day, this camera is an absolute fucking beast, and one little upset isn't going to stop me from loving every second of it. ;)

Thanks, guys. Yes, Nathan, I understand your confusion as we originally had WS in that segment and switched to FF with a FF clarifier. We have cleaned up just about everything online to try to clarify/eliminate confusion, but we are doing another full sweep of all product spec mentions - all cameras, not just SCARLET-W.

After going back and forth with folks here, I think showing max frame rate at 8:1 compression like we do in Ops Guides is causing more confusion than clarity. Hell, I was confused today for a minute. We are going to revamp that section... We will switch to a more matrix version of if you are shooting X resolution at Y aspect ratio by Z capture framerate, here is your compression ratio. That let's you see a much clearer picture than just a sample at 8:1 of max framerates...

Red has always been a little confusing when stating its framerates. Often it will say '5k up to 60fps' without specifying an aspect ratio, so while it's true that 5k WS is 5k and can do 60fps, most people will not understand or think of that implication so it's a little misleading. Recently, with most of the DSMC2 information it's been clearer but obviously still gets a little confusing.

Another confusing thing is the acquisition format section. Is it possible to shoot 3.5k and 2.5k like it's specified in the ops guide? Or just 4.5k like in the red.com specs?

Anton, we are very much trying to clear up things by always indicating aspect ratio per resolution mention. Once that is complete, I will post again here to have you guys do a scrub to see if we missed anything...

Trust that we will find any mistakes. You can count on us obsessed and over excited idiots to read the same specs over and over instead of getting any real work done. ;)

Yeah I noticed that all the product pages are much clearer now! I didn't know when that was done but a year or two ago it took just a little digging to know exactly what was meant.

Ugo, the ops guides are the full blown out details of capabilities. Tech specs on RED.com are usually featured or key data points, not full listing. Would simply be too redundant to have the ops guide regurgitated in various areas. The ops guides should always be referred to for complete details.

Oh, don’t I know it, pal! This isn’t my first rodeo here, haha.

I am glad you can see us improving! Bianca and her team (Signal Corps, i.e., ops guides) and Scott (our red.com content manager) plus a host of others like Nick, engineering, etc have made a concerted effort since this thread kicked off a few weeks ago to clarify and do rolling audits. We have done a lot of edits since then, still slogging through more…

haha Nathan. Its good to know you are going to have a Scarket-W only 20 min from me. I may have to call on ya to work on some shoots this summer! whats the deal with bringing your camera to the states?

Wow. I was not sure as the scarlet-D was not shooting intermediate formats. Great news. Thx.

Have we confirmed the max FPS in 5k 2:1 and 5k HD? is it under 60?

Both are 50fps, as per pg 80: http://s3.amazonaws.com/red_3/downl...ON/DSMC_Operation_Guide_WEAPON_v6.2_Rev-G.pdf

EDIT: I take that back, as clearly I'm still confused as hell. Now I see what Brent was talking about in regards to the 8:1 compression. God damn this is confusing. lol

The table is titled as a max FPS chart, which logically one would expect to find the max frame rates for each format. But nope... apparently not the case. :)

For those of you still struggling with the compression. 5:1 is like crazy good. I shoot a lot of stuff 7:1 and it's very very amazing. Only way I can see needing to shoot 3:1 is for like crazy vfx or like a 30 sec commercial where I wasn't worried about card space. Once you cross over that 7:1 compression setting you start eating up mag space very very quickly. People worried about shooting 7:1, 8:1, even 12:1 need to chill.

I met a few times today with documentation team, web team, and engineering. I am having this streamlined. Basically, that 8:1 max resolution kept confusing me so I am axing it. Sounds like I am not the only one... If you look at the Media Ops Guide matrix, so much better. So, the Camera Ops Guide will just refer you to that.

For example, I have been confused looking at the 8:1 stuff and seeing EPIC DRAGON, WEAPON CF, and WEAPON MG were all not 100fps max - but they aren't at 8:1, haha. Yes, they all do 100fps, but at different speeds. Meaning, at different REDCODE values...

* EPIC DRAGON is 200MB/S and 6K 2.4:1 100fps at 14:1
* WEAPON MG is 225MB/s and 6K 2.4:1 100fps at 12:1
* WEAPON CF is 300MB/S and 6K 2.4:1 100fps at 9:1

This should all be resolved over the coming few days. The camera ops guide was oranges, the product tech specs and media guide were apples. So I am getting rid of all the oranges. And making screwdrivers with the juice....

Comparing Redcode specs of EPIC-MX and Scarlet-W I've found the next:

(1st - Epic-mx, 2nd - Scarlet-w):
5K 25fps - 1:3 - 1:5
4k 100fps - 1:8 - 1:11
2k 210fps - 1:5 - 1:7

Does it mean compression of Epic-X is still better of Scarlet-w? To my mind, comparing the prices for used Epics-MX and new Scarlet-w, Epics look more attractive for VFX. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

For vfx I'm finding I don't need to "denoise" the weapon footage. This creates a bit of a apples and oranges in comparing the footage to redcode ratio. If you have a vfx compositing r3d example I can always post a test r3d from weapon (i.e. weapon redcode and aspect ratio for specific vfx type of shot).
