  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet For Beginners

I was just reading this post. Sounds like your gonna need a lot of horsepower
to work with Red footage. I hope I am set. I built my computer from scratch
to make sure its future proof. Right now I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Bit. I have about 6 gigs of memory at the moment. My motherboard can
handle 24 gigs of memory so I might be upgrading that. One 1.5 terabyte with
room for several more ( at least 2 empty slots. and if remove a fan or two I
could get ridiculous). Intel i7 processor, ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card,
and a Pioneer Blu-Ray drive. I still have room for upgrades inside the case.
Is my system ready for Red or would you recommend some added accessories.

Horsepower, no. Storage, yes. Redcine-X will run on a three-year old laptop just fine. Rendering can take some time, but you don't *need* incredible processing because it automatically generates and utilizes quicktime proxies of different sizes.

What manufacturer's lenses will I be able to use?
There are a number of solutions produced by RED directly and by third parties that let you use other mounts.

B4
BNC-R
C-Mount
Canon EF
Canon FD
Contax/Yashica
Leica M
Leica R
mini-RED
Nikon
OCT-19
Panavision
PL
RED-Mount

I have some very nice Olympus Zuiko 4/3 system lenses for my still camera. Does anyone expect that there will be a 4/3 mount? I'm guessing no? These are some very nice lenses and it'd be great to have the option to use them, although, price-wise, I'm probably going to have to go with the Fixed Scarlet to start with.

I hope they make a 4/3 mount option too eventually, with electronic lens controls.

I have a Aaton mount cooke super 16 zoom lens. I am wondering if I could use it with Scarlet. I know there is not Aaaton mount for scarlet. Anyone has any idea that I can use my aaton lens with scarlet. Thanks in advance.

You can get it converted to PL mount for Scarlet.

Thanks David for your response. I forgot to mention earlier that I knew I could convert it to PL, but it just cost too much. Someone told me 950$ and I have to ship it to UK. It is impossible for me. I am wondering why Red scarlet is not designing Aaton mount, I mean there are lots of great lens for aaton camera. Anyway, please let me know if there is better and cheaper way to convert aaton to pl or other methods. Thanks again in advance.

Does anyone know the place I can remount my lens to Pl for reasonable price? Thanks in advance

Hello all!

I'm very new to these forums and to cameras in general. Needless to say, this is a fantastic place to learn - the number of industry professionals on here blows me away. And the way the RED team interacts with its customers, both existing and prospective should really be a model for other companies.................

thank you michael .your work is wonderful. and useful to prospective buyers at all. i am new to these forums i am indie i want to buy scarlet interchangeable with bare bones. what is the expected cost for that? and also i want to know that in scarlet fixed means brain and lense is fixed and remaining parts like batteries and side cf modules are modular design or total entire unit is fixed itself. what is the expected release date at all.

Hello,

I read near of all the subject but I wasn't able to find the answer to my question :
Can I use a Nikon AF lens ( non AF-S so no internal motor) on Red Scarlet or Epic, with Autofocus working ?
Or do I need AF-S lenses ? As most of the AF-S lenses are Gelded, I can't use them on adapter & cie.

Same question for Canon EF : Does the autofocus works ?

Can someone please tell me what the expected weight is for either EPIC or SCARLET brains?

There will not be any focus motors in the camera ( except for the fixed lens version) There will be electronic controls for the Canon and Nikon mounts, but we don't know yet exactly what the features of those will be. Count on iris control, but auto focus is not likely.

Did you seriously just quote the entiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire post? Can somebody fix that?

Did you seriously complain about the post you already read by adding more noise to the thread?

Autofocus for Nikon and Canon mounts / lenses has already been confirmed.

i am indie i want to buy scarlet. sir can anybody tell what is the focal length of the fixed scarlet in mm. if i take the 2/3 inch scarlet interchangeble any body suggest me in selecting any two lenses out of available five mini primes if i go for 16:9 aspect ratio always. is this question is answered elsewhere or previously please excuse me for that
thank in advance sir

I have a friend that has a 7D with some pretty good canon glass that I can borrow. So I assume I can use those on a Canon mount? How do I compute how much they will change on the 2/3" camera?
Mike

Thank you David, that is exactly what I needed. Getting ready to make a camera purchase and trying to learn all I can about the Red products to make a informed decision. I am not a camera man or DP but hold the producer role in our company. I just want to be able to fully understand what is going on so we can do better work and I can make good decisions.
Mike
