  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet For Beginners

High quality used 16mm and S16mm zooms will serve nicely, but you would have to add external motor systems for servo controls. I plan on using a mix of c-mount and Arri mount used lenses, zooms and primes, that will all be converted to PL mount. All fully manual, at least at first.

Am new to this forum, and am glad folks have held on so long waiting for the 2/3 versions of RED.

I held off getting an Optex or Abakus 132 converter PL mount (B4 to super16) for using one of the many standard 2/3 in. B4 video camera zooms available for cheap.

Assuming the Scarlet will be available someday soooon, I now have the opportunity of getting a used one, as well as a 300mm 2.8 PL mount used on an S16mm camera. Should I get these or will I be disappointed not being able to use them for another year or two??

Also, am I wrong to assume the Canon and Fujinon video zoom lenses will provide an image not too far less noticeable (acceptable) to newer high def zooms or primes? I know image content and sound are most important, but definition also plays a role.

Thanks to all you guys for your contributions.

He he, I have been picking up 16mm lenses here and there for two years now. There is a thread at DVXuser for B4 lenses on the GH1/2 cameras. Some of the results look pretty good.
At some point there will be a B4 mount for the Scarlet Cinema with the necessary optical correction. The camera will provide power to the servo zoom with a proper adapter cable, but it is not known whether it will support auto-iris functions, probably not at first anyway.

So David, I understand you to say there will be a better B4 mount than the Abakus, which has optical correction? Is it because the correction for S16mm is different for the 2/3" Scarlet Cinema?...the film plane being different than the single CMOS chip? I'd hate to pay a couple of grand to find the adapter wouldn't work on the Scarlet.

Thanks.

It should work fine on the optional PL mount for Scarlet. But the Abakus slightly magnifies the image to cover S16. Unnecessary on Scarlet. The Scarlet B4 mount might well be cheaper too.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Since the Scarlet B4 mount may or may not be available for quite some time, plus who knows what it'll cost...maybe I should be looking for a fortune teller with crystal ball! :undecided:

I'd wait and see what info comes out at NAB. The Abakus and RED B4 to PL adapters are readily available, no reason to jump in and buy anything yet. I would be surprised if there is not a B4 mount solution for the Scarlet 2/3" right from the start. And it makes sense to have it constructed as as an actual mount for the camera (since they're so easy to change) rather than an adapter. And no magnification needed.
