  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet For Beginners

I have a friend that has a 7D with some pretty good canon glass that I can borrow. So I assume I can use those on a Canon mount? How do I compute how much they will change on the 2/3" camera?

Those would be pretty useless on a 2/3" camera.

Thanks for the reply John, I figured that out from doing more reading of some of the posted links and doing more research. At least now I know why

Hey guys.

I'm new to 'reduser' and hope you will neglect to notice my lack of familiarity with the format and high-end cameras in general :-)

I'm planning to shoot a short-film for submission to a few local festivals. I have two questions.

1.) Will the Scarlet shoot 24fps? The standard 'film look'
2.) How many minutes of footage will you be able to shoot on 2 8GB cards.

Thanks in advance, I'm about as novice as they come.

Hi Ruan,

I'm also fairly new and have never posted on these boards. However, from what I can tell the Scarlet is still some time away from being released to the public (no one seems to have a date, but six months from now seems like a bare minimum estimate).

Also, keep in mind that production/availability will be smaller in the beginning and pre-existing Red users will have priority.

Anyway, I could be wrong -- maybe the camera is super close to being ready and there will be enough immediate supply to meet demand. I hope so!

I hate the thought of having to get a Canon 5D or 7D while waiting for the Scarlet, but virtually every expert out there recommends that it's better to get started shooting asap than get too fixated on equipment.

I think they're right. Hope that helps.

Yes it will shoot 24fps, it will shoot any frame rate you want from time lapse speeds up to 120 fps.

For 3k Scarlet you can estimate roughly 1 minute average recording time per gigabyte of storage space at 24fps, but it depends on choice of compression rate/quality.

Anthony, something to keep in mind, you could potentially save money by buying new equipment.
Take for example a wedding videographer. Lets say their base package is 1,500. Assuming a low/non-existent overhead outside of the camera package:

To rent a 5D mkII "cine" package would cost you about 650 for a week. Rough math makes that 3 weddings you would have to shoot (minus the cost of the camera package) till you've saved up enough for your own 5D mkII and basic lens. Then you save money on the rest of the gear rentals.
With the savings from now owning the body and lens, I calculate another 5 weddings you need to shoot before you can buy the scarlet (bear in mind it's not even out yet.

Thats a total of 8 weddings shot. You now own a 5D AND a Scarlet.
If you had simply rented a 5D mk II the whole time, it would take you about 10 weddings to get enough money for the scarlet.

Just some ideas to keep in mind. Your circumstance may vary, but use math to figure out your best move.

Hi Josh,

I actually make pretty decent income already just writing DR marketing/ad copy (min of 12-20k per month ... that's not even including royalties owed) -- and my primary professional use for a camera now would be for shoots related to our product launches.

For example, one client is a very successful Wall Street trader with a course on ETF trading. So in October I will be going to NY to shoot him outside in the city and on Wall Street, working with students, short interview segments, etc. It's all fairly simple stuff.

So honestly, I def don't "need" a Scarlet for this ... since whatever I create will have to be compressed down so much for the web anyway. The Canon will be fine for that.

(Although once fiber optics become more prominent, I think 2k, 3k and 4k footage will become more prominent on the web.)

However, I'm really hoping that as I learn all film/video/cinematography better that I'll also someday be able to transition into narrative filmmaking and eventually features. And to build a little agency in Hollywood that does both marketing/advertising and indie narrative filmmaking.

So I am eager to get a Scarlet and begin learning the system -- as I think it's a complete platform that I'll be able to use for the rest of my life (I'm only 30 right now).

I really hope it comes out within the next 6 months :-)

Anyway, thanks for the response. I love this forum!

Autofocus for Nikon and Canon mounts / lenses has already been confirmed.

Ok sorry but I have searched and cant find a definitive answer to these questions, maybe the answer should be added to the front page, once again sorry if I have missed it.

The 2/3 Fixed Scarlet has Auto Focus and Automatic Lens control (motorized)
including Touchscreen/ Remote Focus and Tracking Yes?

The 2/3 Cinema has Auto Focus with certain Lenses and Mounts eg.
Canon L series, but has no motorized control and has AF via the Touchscreen LCD/Redmote, but not tracking Yes ?

The Scarlet S35 has AF with certain Lenses and Mounts, e.g. Canon L series but has no motorized control and has AF via the Touchscreen LCD/Redmote, but not tracking Yes ?

Could a list of all AF lenses that work with the Scarlet 2/3 Cinema and S35 be posted with and included in the Scarlet features page.

Thanks

Till

Do not fool yourself! I say in a jokely manner... :)

Look at this clip, RED to Youtube and looks miles ahead of any Canon DSLR.

Even if compression and resolution weren't an issue, the colorimetry is still funky on the Canons IMO. Not to mention the obvious like aliasing and rolling shutter.

Youtube improved A LOT in one year. I'm sure it will get even better.

A RED camera will definitely make a difference EVEN for web content.

Count on it...

The fixed and cinema Scarlets have essentially the same technical capabilities.
  • They can shoot 3K (3072x1728) RAW up to 120 fps or Full Frame 1080p RGB up to 30 fps.
  • They offer 16:9, 2:1, and 2.4:1 aspect ratios.
  • Both provide for Time Lapse and Ramping (changing frames per second on the fly).
  • Both use REDCODE 42 to encode.

The S35 and FF35 are also very similar.
  • They both shoot FF1080P up to 30 fps, 2K (2048x1152) up to 72 fps, and QuadHD (3840x2160) and 4K (4096x2304) up to 30fps. However, the S35 may shoot 5K (5120x2880) at 30 fps, while the FF35 may shoot 6K (6144x3456) at 30 fps.
  • They offer 16:9, 2:1, 2.4:1, and custom aspect ratios.
  • Both provide Time Lapse.
  • The S35 uses REDCODE 80, the FF35 uses REDCODE 100.
are these shooting specs up to date?

That depends upon what you mean by up-to-date. I've hesitated to update the specs on this page because they have for the very large part, remained the same.

But now there is no S35 Scarlet. It's Epic Light. So that doesn't exist at all anymore.

So who knows what will happen - will there ever be an FF35 Scarlet? Or even an S35 Scarlet? We don't know.

The specs for the 2/3" Scarlet are, as best I know, current. But then again, we were just told that there were surprises in store for the Scarlet program. So they may change here in the near future.

And 2/3" Scarlet was bumped up to RC100. But they're not even using that naming convention now, in favor of compression ratios.

The most "up to date" specs we've seen aren't reflected here, but even those are like a year old. At this point I say unsticky this thing and make a new one when we have something at all current.

I'm all for that.

This is all outdated, but what we "know" now, as you said, is old news already and I just have to assume that it is inaccurate in more than one way.

Of course, another major part of this post was to explain some of the cinema terminology that people were struggling with after the "3K for 3K" announcement drew lots of small, relatively low budget filmmakers into the previously price-exclusive cinema market.

I honestly don't know how much of that is needed these days. DSLRs have cleared up a lot of the crop factor business and questions about S35.

And the subsequent price increases and "professional" positioning of RED seems to have thinned the ranks of the uninformed.

Mini Primes

Mini Primes

What is the mount for Mini Primes?
If I want to change from a mini prime to a Red zoom, is it the same mount?
Is it easy to change mounts?
If I end up with 2 Mini Primes, a Red zoom and 2 Nikon lenses - do you think it is realistic? No run and gun here ...

I agree. Done.

What is the mount for Mini Primes?

RED mini PL mount.

If I want to change from a mini prime to a Red zoom, is it the same mount?

No. All other current RED zooms use standard PL mount.

Is it easy to change mounts?

It's supposed to be easy. -- 4 bolts.

If I end up with 2 Mini Primes, a Red zoom and 2 Nikon lenses - do you think it is realistic? No run and gun here ...

Seems like a lot of extra work, unnecessary mount swapping and this can put the sensor at increased risk. You would be swapping between 3 different mounts.

Thanks, Jeff,

Seems like 3 mounts * 4 bolts = 12 things to mess up.

I´ll forget that ...

I agree too, and a PL mount zoom lense can be really expensive : look at the RED Store.

It starts from 6 000 $ and be aware that you'll have to deal with a huge crop factor by using a PL lense on the Scarlet Sensor.

Good luck also to find an affordable 8x PL zoom...

The Scarlet cinema is nice when you want to stick with mini primes but it's definitely not for a run'n'gun environment, unless RED delivers a RED mini 8X zoom for that cam.

High quality used 16mm and S16mm zooms will serve nicely, but you would have to add external motor systems for servo controls. I plan on using a mix of c-mount and Arri mount used lenses, zooms and primes, that will all be converted to PL mount. All fully manual, at least at first.
Still not as cheap and effective as the fixed though. You could by a fixed brain for servo zoom capability and an interchangeable cinema brain for primes cheaper than you could buy and fit a similar quality aftermarket servo zoom.
