What is that lens??? 18-50?? Can't find it at the store?

We'll, basically looks like what I was suggesting instead of a fixed. So, what's the future, ff35, I hope so, cheaper s16 or 4/3rds fixed. Will dragon be ff35 as previously suggested, nice upgrade.

What is the one thing I would have liked too see aswell, 4k p48 and p50. These speeds are the future with digital cinema projection. Canon is trying to erode from above, and with the 24p 4k SLR EOS from beneath (I guess) without threatening themselves too much. P50 just walks up and slaps them in the face, and is usefull for future SHD TV work, and work in Pal countries.

Anyway, my suggestion was for a $5k-7k stills motion camera. So, as I can't afford this, and want a fixed rugged compact anyway for extreme weather etc, what about a low-cost s16 fixed (with water sealed case buttons sockets)?

What happened to the scarlet brain that could do 120-180 fps 3k? That would be great for s16 fixed with 50p 4k and highspeed 2k mode.

dont know if its been mentioned, but some are reporting another Canon offering also, with 4k raw?

http://blog.gsmarena.com/canon-showcases-upcoming-eos-movie-dslr-will-do-4k-resolution-video-at-24fps/

canon are weird if this is true..

Not RAW - MotionJPEG. Interesting though, since the 1D should be capable of up to 14 fps continuously. And that is RAW in the camera's full still resolution. "Just" 10 more pictures per second would have make it - basically - something completely different.

Short answer now is:
Look at Epic footage.

It is the same camera essentially with frame rates cut back. The sensor and DR are the same.
But the resolution is a little lower. Unfortunately, footage on the Web won't do it justice.

No pricing or delivery date yet... Strange that they would announce a camera that sounds a lot more compelling than the other one they just announced though, so I think it may be fake (or maybe they're planning to ship it in a year or something).

Funny that now Scarlet is the one with the shipping date though!

No HD-SDI 4:4:4 then? Or would that be a 'not yet' we're constantly releasing firmwares?! Need to get my order in!!! :biggrin5:

I think they announced that 4K camera because they knew everyone won't understand why C300 is only 1080P and, but it is just MY personnal opinion, I think they had hints that Red will unleash a 4K S35 Scarlet instead of the 3K 2/3" one. But I also think it is clear that since the launch of the Red One, everyone in the business is looking more or less at 4K. They all just want to keep the market at a higher price range for some reasons. My 2 cents.

PS : I know a camera with a name starting by "A" and ending by "exa" that seems to have been launched very poorly. Despite the fact it is a great camera, I'm not sure in its price range it can compete with the Epic-X or the japanese F-numbered 4K camera. Maybe a german company priced it too high. That was my other 2 cents...

I think it's unbelievable that some people want their camera to cook them breakfast while still entertaining guests and making love to your images at the same time... You wanted upgrades, you got it, you wanted modality, you got it, you wanted PL - CANON & NIKON you got it ... People are upset they are getting a 4K camera for 10K? It's closest competitor is more expensive, and is still stuck trying to make sure you will lose 90% of your investment in a larger format camera once new tech comes out... Spoiled...

Paul, with respect, perhaps you could consider showing some sympathy to those RED Users who've been here a lot longer than you and are understandably disappointed that the camera they've wanted for so long is not here. Despite 'Everything is subject to change' many here had been hoping for something similar to the original Scarlet.........they want to join the RED train but simply can't afford Scarlet-X at the moment so their frustration is to be expected, but that doesn't make them "spoiled".

I'm not in that group (if I needed to I could go for Scarlet-X, but I wanted something smaller) but nevertheless I can understand their angst.

I feel like red could hav done both cameras. That could have web on the epic s and the fixed lens would have been great. I understand that red is a "Professional cinem " company you prove that by giving the pros you cams and the made magic with them ... But also people made magic the canon 5ds so they most cinema professional camera to . I am dissappointed by te fact they stop playing the game in te middle of the game. I love the new camera because that what it is a new camera. People was happy with the fixed lens. You guy make short films and take the fixed cam around and people fell in love with red all over agian even when they dropped the ball. And if you don't think they dropped the ball your blind to the fact. I Want the fixed scarlet sorry. If I knew these guys would have pulled this trick I would just invested into a Red One. You guys took away from the little man. They fan base you have. Now what is the next move if canon really bring a camera At 4k for 3750 ... Red going to chase after thy cam to compete. I am
Sorry , you just don't hurt your fans the way RED has done sorry

ARGH!

Waiting for a paycheck to come has never been this painful. Just a few more weeks now. Then that Scarlet will be all mine...

Oh. And nice work RED TEAM :)

I think the grey is perfect.

Reminds me strongly of Rollei 6003 vs. 6006... wonder if Jim had that in mind, I'm sure he has both in his collection!

I do not work for Red and don't want to be fanboy-ish or something but they already told that they dropped the Fixed lens model because of an issue with the lens ! (it couldn't keep in focus in the full zoom range or something like that). Then they choose to place the camera in the S35 market. It was the wiser (is that a correct word ? *french, bad english*) decision to make for them. If we take a look at the market, everyone is begging for S35 sensor. I was about to write "in the cinema industry" but not only. I know a lot of TV networks that are working with s35 sensors. National French TV Group (France Television) has a lot of Alexa shoots for telefilm and series (it replaces S16mm in fact), M6 network shoots some shows with 5DmkII cameras, more and more documentaries are being shot with S35 sensors (the BBC tolerates DSLR if it is justified... But now we have a bunch of "affordable" cameras that can match broadcast standards !). In fact, appart from news, sports and some entertainement shows, a lot of TV stuff is being shot in S35 format.

Red Digital CINEMA, as the name says, is a cinema company. ENG and stuff like that are not their market. And in the Digital Cinema Business, when everyone was stucked with 2/3" sensors, everyone wanted S35.

It's just a better business decision. That being said, maybe they will be able to put an S16mm camera on the market or a cheaper S35 camera (come on, Scarlet-X is under 10K, or is 14015 with the package and does a lot more than a lot of other cameras. It is a big amount of money but it is a steal for what it has to offer) but for now they just knocked out their competitors for that Round !

As a 3+ year scarlet waiter, turned Epic-S waiter, the Scarlet-X is a dream come true, at a $10K price point seems unreal. Thank you Red red team for all the restless nights and sacrifices you did in making the Scarlet-X into a camera with a ship date. I know this is a big let down for those who had their eyes set on the scarlet-fixed, 3 years of waiting only to have it morph into something out of range. I can feel the pain, but I believe Red made the right choice.

It seems most of the fuss is over lack of 120fps @ 3K. For a narrative shooter, this isn't that big of an issue, though not so much for sports guys. The way I see it is, I'll prob really need 120 maybe 1% of the time, and for those times there is the option to rent Epic, or my personal choice is go twixter or kronos route. At 48fps 3K, retiming it to 96fps or even 120fps is only 2-2.5x of 48fps. That's not a lot of retiming for negative artifacts to creep up. Of course, it all depends on footage content. I'll be sure to post up retimed tests to see how well it compares to Epic.

Kudos again to Red and the reduser community for making Scarlet-X a reality! It's hard for me to believe that Red is making a profit at this price point with it all made in USA but still crushing the competition! That deserves a hats off.

Thank you Red. As a new business owner, you'll have my order after I place a few calls. Excited to finally be apart of the Red owner's family.
