SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Jim, what kind of head is that? Is that another surprise?

Loving those side cheese plate thingies. What are they called and when will they sell?

Your post is killing me. I'm on the fence right now... and those words are... brilliant. I have my details filled in the purchase form, and I literally don't have enough money yet to afford the 14k. But I know I could get it. Won't be easy. But I could.

Who wants to push me?

it's 30% the cost of an Epic and exactly the same camera technically at 24FPS 7:1 compression . . . oh and, upgradeable. DO IT NOW!!!

Still slightly confused. If we are using 35mm stills lenses and shooting 4K what is the crop factor?

Just move to Europe. That $14k looks even nicer when you say €10.5k. Or better yet, £9k :biggrin5:

Yeah going from 3k @ 120fps to 1024x540 @ 120fps is a what killed it for us. We had the credit card sitting on the desk in front of us ready to go but as soon as we saw 1024x540 @ 120fps we knew it was done.

We shoot sports almost exclusively and without high fps the Scarlet is pretty much useless for us.
Obviously it's horses for courses. But even at its lowest maximum frame rate, Scarlet-X still gives you 12fps. Go to 4K and you get 25fps. That's amazing as long as your intented output is stills...

Ahh they are so cute before they realize they are going to become the new camera overlords! ;)
That is effectively Skynet's baby photo. :-)

You know what, guys? Even the 3K Scarlet at $10K is still more impressive than the C300. To me that is the most amazing thing of all.

Soon, there will be no difference between motion and still cameras for most applications. Thanks to RED.

Interesting footnote: Canon has a DSLR concept, the EOS C, which will have a 4K sensor in a standard DSLR body. What I don't get is why such a sensor isn't already in the C300. Either Canon is smarter than I think it is or...

Despite all that, this is one of my favourite Karl Lagerfeld quotes:

But then I know only how I am, not how others are. I never compare, I never compete.

I think I'm wrong but here's my clue... If "FF35 at 5K" the camera does, then I assume at 4K it is APS-C size windows. If I'm correct, the crop factor is 1.6. (but I can't help thinking that I'm wrong)

He he, I say what I know, and what I see... Oh here you go Josef...

As for the EPIC v Scarlet issue, I really think that for me, having worked with the EPIC, and now played with the SCARLET tonight.... that EPIC owners shouldn't be sad. On sets where filmmaking is exercised at the highest level, there is no substitute for an EPIC camera. This is where your cameras belong, and they should still find their home.

Using the SCARLET, after supporting an EPIC, was like playing with the DEMO version of a software.... all the basic functions are there, but all the cool stuff, you cant activate! You feel like if you buy the full version, you know you will be able to do everything you need. Many people will be able to use SCARLETs for indie features, and this is a great thing: Wouldn't you rather see a film with a good story and a small budget shoot on a Scarlet over a DSLR? Rental wise, I'm sure this will be an option now.

These are exciting times. I still cant get to sleep!!

Quick question :

Can we have custom names engraved on the camera when we order it ?

Srry to post this in the wrong place but i dont know where to quickly find the info. - by placing my deposit for the package deal, am i sealing my place in line for the camera? secondly, by doing this am i telling red that when the camera is ready to ship i will have the remaining funds ready?

For instance if i didnt have the funds by the time the camera was ready to ship to me what would happen?

Thanks man, this is also the question I'm burning to ask; I really don't care of my place in line only to be able to pay the rest when I'm ready, just so not to loose the package deal. Is that Ok with you guys at Red. Thanks.

Ps: I was already here when Red first call for $1K deposit for the REDONE, then I was unable to do this only because I don't have the $1K not the lack of faith. I already believe in this unusual company and the man, just as excited as today.

I'm not quite sure I understand the omission of 5K 2.39 if that's really what is happening based on the chart and specifications. Doesn't less data equal more possible frames?

Also, if the max data rate is 55MB/s and that's 5K 5:1 at 12fps, then why can't this camera do 24fps at 10:1? Will we find more about that soon? For that matter, even if my math is slightly off, the camera should surely be able to do 5K 2.39 at some higher compression to equal 55MB/s.

If it's a case of the camera only being able to compress a maximum ratio of 7:1 (as indicated by the chart) then this does make sense. But what about 5K Anamorphic, if we use a 7:1 ratio, it should be able to shoot 24fps.

I am truly excited for this camera, I just don't understand the chart only showing minimum compressions instead of both minimum and maximum compressions at given frame sizes.
