SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Great night tonight. I was very happy and grateful to be there. It felt so much more genuine than the other announcement today.

I'll be sending you a small truck of money next week for one.

After a long time of being a Red user and supporter, I'm proud to say that I'll be a Red owner.

Sad I didn't get to say high to Jarred, but I shook Graeme's hand for a moment and I met a few cool people too.

Excellent job guys. Really.

Impressive news today, unfortunately a shooting package with zoom lens puts it into the $15-$20k range and way beyond my needs.

What you guys would charge to part with your Scarlet-Fixed prototypes? :-)

I think you could be shooting with a scarlet-x for under $15k, you just might need to forgo some of the RED-brand aks and use a still zoom. Ways to save money on a Scarlet Package:

-Record in lower res (3k) or higher compression (17:1) to stretch a 64GB SSD (its still a lot more data and detail than most compressed HD)
-Skip the raw and record (redlog possible?) to an external HD recorder with less expensive media and longer recording times (recorder could even double as a monitor?)
-Use a less expensive HDMI monitor instead of the $1600 RED LCD
-Look for other power options with lower cost and higher capacity and get a redmote instead of side handle
-Use an less expensive still zoom lens

You could potentially be shooting with a Scarlet-X in a few months for $12k-15k i imagine. You still get lots of latitude and resolution and frame rates in a small package and you could rent other components when you need them for bigger jobs.

I first wanna say congrats on the launch.

Second I am posting here because I am a film student looking to buy one of the two cameras released in the last 24 hours. This is a big investment for me professionally and financially. I would love to jump on the red but I havent seen any footage from the scarlet yet. Any ETA on possible test footage?

Bravo Jim, Jarred and the entire RED Team. Well Played

How is it a amazing artist like yourself doesn't have a RED. That will not stand!! Love you work - both still and motion. Very cool

That cam is out of my price unfortunately, not only because of the starting kit price but also for the media. Shooting in 4K & S35 requires a lot of SSD and a good follow focus.

I was hoping for a run'n'gun rig. It seems I waited years for nothing. RED just trashed the Scarlet and took the EPIC-S and renamed it to Scarlet X.

Byebye also to 120 fps at 3K : only 48 fps at 3K.

Oh that cam is definitely a game changer, but only for professionals now. I was expecting a starting kit at 10K$ but now it costs 14K$. I'll keep my money for now.

Heh heh... Scarlet Extreme Testing... From +50C to below -20C and then back again... without skipping a beat.

Does that VLC file on the screen say scarlet would like to see :)

I think I saw you there at the event Phil. I was there in attendance too, and I had a blast. I was standing right behind you in line. Only asian guy there until Tonaci showed up. :)

I too am will be a proud RED owner. Never thought this day would ever happen. When my order went through, I had a huge smile on my face and still can't wipe it off! Jim and TEAM did a GREAT job.

I know tonight is about what is...but is there any chance someone can give us a sense as to whether or not the 8x Fixed is still a possibility? The 120fps test footage from earlier this year is one of the sweetest things I've seen in recent memory, and I would love to be able to own the camera that produced that footage.

Congrats on Scarlet X...it really is a game changer : ).

No 8X Fixed. We had terminal issues with the lens. If you are sad, just think about us. All those development dollars down the drain.

Jim

I hate to say it, but after hanging in there since 2009 waiting feverishly for the Scarlet and buying a 7D to hold me over until Red Claus finally came, like I think a huge swath of other potential buyers, you guys lost me. $12k+ for a usable Scarlet is a different market altogether than the original Scarlet market promised to be. It was the future-forward demo that bought DVX-100s so quickly Panasonic couldn't make them fast enough that Red promised to emancipate into their gorgeous image sandbox. Just as the DVX brought 24p unto the world for indy filmmakers, Red promised to bring uncompressed unto the world for that same ultra-low budget crowd. I respect that technology is a fickle maiden, promising the moon and just as quickly stealing it away. I also understand that basic economics dictate a reasonable margin otherwise you're a public service and not a business. Both of those are very real rubber-on-the-road map re-drawers. If those ultimately informed Red's decision to up-market the Scarlet, I understand completely. If it was an art-elite decision (i.e. "the definition of a professional is someone who can afford to buy our camera"), that'd be a total bummer. I hope it's not that. There's tons of scrappers who could make papa proud with a $3k-ish camera that will now just pick up a GH2, a firmware hack and call it a day. Not a bright day. But a day. The Scarlet technology is amazing. The vision is amazing. The hype? Not-so-much. I know the tag line well, "everything is subject to change". But to court the peasant but marry the princess sucks. C'mon, kids!!! Bring back the love for crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify and vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as crazy, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. ...And they're usually broke.

As with the crowd for sure CONGRATULATIONS -Jim, Jarred and the entire Red team. I will be buying two for a Pilot episode. Way cool.... it's been quite a ride since the beginning dvxuser announcements. Our company will be looking at two scarlets and two Epics. It's going to be a cool shooting experience for a few years for sure. Guess I will be talking to accounting. Love you guys! Goodnight!

Hey Jim, I ordered the Scarlet X Al Canon Mount Package today. I really want the PL mount as my main mount, but I would like to keep the Canon Al mount also.

If we tell the Bomb Squad rep that we would like to buy the Ti PL mount and have it shipped with that instead of the Canon mount, would it start shipping in November?

And since we would also want to keep the Al Canon mount, would we get that shipped to us at a different time?

Thanks!

All those development dollars down the drain.
Yeah, that was my immediate thought. That's a damn shame...would've been an awesome little camera.

What you guys pulled off, though, is incredible. Maybe things happen for a reason...or something.

Congrats to people who can afford 14K plus Scarlet-X

I feel bad that last price i know around 6K was good i was hoping for maximum 8K .. which i can afford ...

... I was following RED after 3k for 3k$ ...

Dissapointed

Now Bye bye Scarlet & bye bye Honda CBR 1000rr [ which was sold to buy scarlet :( ]

Jim

There are only two things I'm sad about...3k 120fps because it looked GORGEOUS...and that I wasn't able to officially join the Red family due to my financial limitations at the moment (10k is my ceiling at this juncture).

So if those are the two reasons I'm sad, you've done well tonight : ). Looking forward to becoming a member of the Red army whenever I'm able...congrats once again : ).

And Every Scarlet is proudly made at RED headquarters in Irvine, California.

Ahh they are so cute before they realize they are going to become the new camera overlords! ;)
