SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

-Sweeeet..!

What an announcement. I can't imagine what Canon are thinking right now. What a night - it was thrilling and appalling, waiting for the page to refresh and then everything stopped.

Anyway, I'm in and ordered!

I forgot to say - Congratulations and Thank-you to Red for the amazing camera, specs and price!

I'm in! I spent a frantic hour and a half on RED.com trying to order to get a low enough place hopefully to get it before Christmas. I really really really did not think I was buying a scarlet today. I had a dream last night that I bought one but in my dream it was pretty much exactly the same as Scarlet-X but one 'step' up (I dreamt they offered a 5k motion, 6k stills FF35 scarlet). But when I got to thinking about it with the discounts now before Dec 31st and the promise of a "Dragon" upgrade and Jim's insistence that I should invest in a camera company that let's you keep upgrading the decision became a no-brainer.

4k for <$10k is a steal. I'm really really hoping the Dragon upgrade will offer higher 5k framerates and a sensor that lets you shoot 4:3 anamorphic 35mm in addition to 6k stills. Fingers crossed. If not, I'm getting such a discount on accessories by buying now and using it over the next 6-8 months that by the time a FF35 option comes along I'll have more than paid off the depreciation on resale. No matter what I have confidence that what RED offers down the road will be fair--especially after today's Scarlet-X announcement. It's not every day you make a $15k impulse purchase, but I'm not nervous and I don't think I'm going to regret it.

Now the waiting game to hope that I navigated the RED.com burning server labyrinth before they were sold out all of the Scarlet-Xs between now and mid December. When will we know when our Scarlet-X is scheduled to ship? If my scarlet doesn't ship before Christmas I would be tempted to buy a TI-PL lens mount now to buy my way up in line. Or I'll just bat my eyes and ask really nicely. :D

What a great night.

Jarred,
Agreed! Was so glad to be there with you guys. This is amazing. Ordered from Red studior. Cant wait to get my Scarlet! :)

Absolutely stunning achievement. Epic 5k image quality with no compromises for stills and 4k for motion for less than $10k to start is incredible.
120fps at 3k, or even 2k, is the only real disappointment. But the tradeoff in image quality is worth it. Scarlet X makes sense in so many ways for the current market and I am sure greatly simplifies life for Red moving into volume production with two cameras that share all major components from sensor to modules.

I will really miss the 2/3" though. That was an ideal camera for me. But it all boils down to image quality and high resolution raw shooting for me, and this camera can replace any still camera I would buy as well. One camera for everything. No compromises, except for frame rates.
Will have to wait until the end of the year to see if I can swing one. It is a significant change in price as I was hoping to keep an entry level shooting package at no more than $10k. But I can't see buying any other alternative either. I'm in if personal finances work out. May have to buy it on the layaway plan.

Congratulations to all of you involved in this, Jim, Jarred, and the rest of Red Team. Absolutely brilliant all around.

For those of us following developments since 2008 I doubt the announcement was much of a surprise. Differentiation by frame and data rates was a key factor of the early product line charts.

But now that it is finally happening I can't help but feel like Jim is the neighbourhood crack dealer trying to get me hooked by giving me a little taste.

And having every accessory, media, you name it, work between both Epic and Scarlet only fuels my fears. I can see many of us getting hooked on Scarlet but later finding the higher frame rates of Epic -- especially HDRx -- too alluring to resist. So are we going to be looking to unload our Scarlet brains to make an easy move to Epic in a year or two?

Jim, any hope of a future internals upgrade to get just a little higher frame/data rate without having to dump the Scarlet brain to buy a whole-hog Epic we may not be able to afford?

And for what it's worth, I would have picked the larger sensor for more DOF control rather than higher frame rates so I'm very, very, happy the 2/3 sensor did not happen. Edit: Just learned it crops at lower rez -- darn!

RED vs CANON: Firs round knock-out in the first second. RED WINS!!

Sheisse, best day of the year, and i'v already had some pretty good day this year.
Just scraping my money together and hope to see my baby fast.

So, Jarred - what's happening with those Scarlet 2/3" fixed protos that are now redundant... Hollidaycams for the family?

If you have a spare... :)

Congrats with Scarlet-X!

I´ve been here sincle like 2007(8?), and registered 2009, waiting for this night and... you lost me guys. No fixed, three times the price... Bye! :-(

this wil be the perfect second unit

Perfect if you don't need higher frame rates, (which are more likely to be used on a 2nd unit)

2/3 inch isn't on the way out as sensitivity is increasing and there will be a mass of 4k 2/3 inch TV broadcast kit eventually when UHDTV rolls out.

The Canon 10x lens could be appealing if the price is right, wil be interesting to compare angles of view (at the wide end) to the 24-290 to see exactly what the difference is.

Red's pricing has left a serious wake!

I'm hoping that the Red team, following their history of always delivering more to the costumer, will enable higher FPS either at 720p (1280x720), 1080p or 2K (maybe that would be asking too much :) !20fps at these resolutions would not "touch" the Epic with its 5K 120fps and 3K 300 FPS in any way. And it would be a Godsend for motor sports or sport and wildlife shooters , and even for narrative filmmakers that like to use dramatic slow motion... BUT, this will be for another day. Today is about ordering the Scarlet, the true digital cinema revolution for independent filmmakers. The rest I leave it to the Red team. They always took their costumers to the heart. I'm here for the long run. :)
