  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8X fixed with Ted at Sundance!

I hope so too. I record most of my audio off camera, but having such an elegant solution to a scratch track would be wonderful.

Im french , even for me it sounds strange :)

Talking about the Scarlet, i know the 8X fixed lens i supposely to be out after NAB, let's say May right? What is the latest rumours about the non lens fixed Scarlet?

thanks for posting. i know some french, but i'd say it's easy enough to get the gist of anyways. interesting dialect... sounds like an american-speaking french. :) sounds kind of like me...

Around the same time supposedly. Nothing official on any of this yet.

Something of an extreme example:

The idea is that you really can put anything anywhere. So, it's impact on balance would be entirely up to how the end user decides to arrange their gear on the camera.

Hahaha, he's got balanced his camera alright. Probably not such a good idea to show up on a wedding with that. Thank you Michael!

Wow, I can't watch this video enough. I'm absolutely blown away.

Was it just me or was the question about the depth channel mapping skipped over a little bit? Is that still a plan for the Scarlet, I hadn't heard about it before this video (because I'm new and all) and thought that feature sounded fantastic just based on the brief description I heard. Either way I'm still obsessed with this camera, but that peaked my curiosity!

Yep, American that lived in France 8 years who never tried to get the accent down.

I cringe everytime I see that... but then remember, these are engineering builds. Everything should look nice an dandy for the final product

Yeah, don't take these pictures as being exactly what the release build will look like! Early RED ONE firmware actually had the rear LCD set in Comic Sans, just because they didn't have enough time to get a better font... Too bad hardly any of the pictures in that thread work - it was pretty funny.

Has this thread really gone 85+ posts without my involvement? :eek6:

Great interview Chris, in spite of the focus issues I still enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing. Ted is an awesome dude...

Thanx ... but this is just another interview where nonstop huntig for focus ruined whole video. It makes me mad. If I can't see important informations at the moment I need them, that's probably the reason to use another camera which can easily keep everything in focus. I think that every single cheap camcorder can do this. It always suprised me that so many people which are interested in cameras and filmaking or even work in this area can produce so many bad pictures and videos.

Sorry I made you mad.

I'm an audio guy. I have a DP friend that is shooting my movie. Not everyone that is interested in cameras actually shoot them in production.

I'm sure you can post a link to an interview you have done with 30 minutes notice, in a place you've never been, in ultra low lights, with a camera you've never used to shoot video before (7D in this case), coming out of -10° weather, holding the camera, focusing the camera, asking questions and listening for the answers, getting to hold and play with an unreleased product that you're dying to get your hands on -unscripted- all the while feeling that you are imposing on your subject seeing that he left his nice hot meal to talk with you.

I'd love to see how the pros do it!

I was just happy to be able to talk with Ted and play with the Scarlet a bit.

Sometimes I think story does trump technique. In this case, it was just nice to get some interesting information about the camera. IMO, the lack of production expertise can be forgiven.

using an APS-C sized 7D sensor is hard for novices i dont blame you at all for having focus issues. the obsession with shallow DOF has resulted in cameras being harder to use without extensive practice and skill. (though hopefully that will keep the industry pros getting ca$h and prevent iphones from replacing us)

that and most of the shotty videos of scarlet demos were shot on iphones without tripods so overall i think thats why we don't have quality shots of it...but can you blame them, they are too excited to drop sticks...? i mean when you have a limited amount of time with the thing i think your focus (no pun intended) can drift:001_rolleyes:

Red and we will know prices when they get a true unit production cost for the assembly line. Until then it is just a ball park estimate and could go a bit either way from $6k ish for a basic shooting kit, probably with the 5" monitor, CF module, side handle, and battery/charger. The $6k figure Ted has estimated is for a basic kit though and not just the brain.
$8-10k for a practical basic field kit seems more reasonable. That is where my own budget planning has been aiming from day one.

Do we know how now RED brand CF cards will work? Hoodman RAW cards are up to 675x and go up to 32GB. I doubt RED's are faster.

as discussed many times on the forum actual usage compared to spec sheets on CF cards can widely vary...and sadly as stated before Red is not willing to share what the test results were on whos cards float vs flop when it comes to actual consistant read write speeds vs made up specs....:attention9ha:
