  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8X fixed with Ted at Sundance!

As always, excited to see the cam and redmote in action. Also if RED paid Ted his weight in gold they'd still come off cheap. Such a genius seller :)

Oh, and will people start to bring decent cameras to actually film interviews with again, ever? Like you go meet the hottest cameramaker in town and leave the car keys cam or whatever at home and bring something with an autofocus that is not pathetic? Much appreciated.

I would love to see some RED interviews shot on RED! Haha

Thanks for the video, It's nice to see a newer incarnation of the Scarlet. I see some progress on the GUI, which seemed a little fiddly to operate last time Ted was holding one. Now I see bigger sliders and more advanced interaction, although not final for sure. I hope Jannard has hired some top UX/UI design expert to refine the touch panel experience for professional use.

Also please don't take it the wrong way if we give some constructive criticism while being perfectly conscious of the fact that those are work-in-progress prototypes. I wanted to comment on the monitor connector and how it seems like it might pose some clearance issues with left-handed focus on the camera while holding the camera with the right hand on the integrated handle. It seems like it protudes too much. Also it might interfere with some follow focus units. But I understand this is not a major problem and a simple resizing o reorienting the connector might not be a problem, just like you've changed the side of the other end of the monitor cable from right to left.

I don't remember now... was Scarlet's redcode 12bpc like the Red One or 16bpc like the Epic?

I noticed that it's on the left side with Ted's Scarlet, but on Epic-M 007 Bond it's on the right side. Are there two plugs? and if so is this standard? or is RED still deciding which side to put the plug on? or ...

Just looked again. The plug is left or right depending on how the base is mounted to the brain. Nevermind...

Originally they were all 12 bit. But Epic has the option of either 12 bit or 16 bit capture according to the specs at Red.com. Hopefully Scarlet will follow suit.

OK im sold... I was going for the R1 for the interchangeable, but I dont feel like starting a new lens collection... I LOVE THIS CAMERA cant wait to put my money down...

Did anyone else get a little worried that when asked about a price Ted didn't say his usual "around $6k give or take" like he has said in other interviews.

It seems that every day its slowly inching its way out of my price range.

How fast does the zoom move from minimum to max zoom? Is it fast?

EPIC's mysterium x sensor is specced at 66db S/N ratio. Does the Scarlet 8x have the same specs?
What's the base ISO and is the S/N ratio measured at 18% gray?

Yes, it jumped out at you. Around 6k is in my budget. "We'll just have to wait and see" is probably not.

He mentions $6K again.

That still seems to be the ballpark.

6K is the starting kit but I guess I'll have at least to put 4000 $ or 5 000 $ with accessories (medias, battery, travel & home HDDs, laptop, shoulder & static rig, sound, etc.) So the ticket to use Scarlet is more closer to 10 K$.

This is what pushes it out of my price range. I'm hoping there'll be a kit that includes SSD, power, ect. that reduces the price a little.

Yep - the price of the brain alone will only get you a brain, which won't do a whole lot but look pretty on it's own.

RED previously announced a package for the Fixed that included the bare necessities. It was never flushed out, though, or finalized, and the price was never firmly set.

Red and we will know prices when they get a true unit production cost for the assembly line. Until then it is just a ball park estimate and could go a bit either way from $6k ish for a basic shooting kit, probably with the 5" monitor, CF module, side handle, and battery/charger. The $6k figure Ted has estimated is for a basic kit though and not just the brain.
$8-10k for a practical basic field kit seems more reasonable. That is where my own budget planning has been aiming from day one.

Well, the ~$4750 previous price tag (before the addition of HDRx™) was for the KIT. That was fixed brain/lens, media, power, Redmote, and a 2.8" LCD.

It was everything needed to shoot out of the box. We didn't know some details, such as exactly what the power was (handle? Some other batter module?)

Since then, the price has gone up by $1000 to add HDRx™. And we know the 2.8 LCD s no longer being made. So, does the $1250 increase to ~$6K account for the HDRx™ and bigger 5.0" LCD combo? Seems perhaps reasonable.

And in the CES video, Ted had referred to what he was holding in his hand as "about $6,000". That had the Side grip w/ battery, and 5.0 LCD with Redmote.

So,it doesn't seem UNRESAONABLE to assume that's close to what will come in the $6K kit, but of course that's not confirmed.... but I believe we will be getting more than just a brain.
