  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

I have been pretty closely following this forum for well over a year and I would have to disagree with a couple of the conclusions here.

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm not so sure it's about complete control, at least to the extent of Apple hardware.

From my understanding, RED is open to third-party developers for software and hardware. Jim posted not too long ago that a third-party module is already in development.

I don't interpret the openness of third party solutions to exactly include "modules." I think RED was pretty specific in discussing 3D rigs and underwater housings, which have been available for RED ONE, but I don't recall any discussion about anything that might be called a "module" in the way RED has discussed that term (I/O. media recording, control, power, etc). IMO "modules" are likely to stay RED for awhile.

I recall reading someone from RED team mention that they are not opposed to third-party media solutions. They would, of course, need to be RED approved and so on. It's just that right now, it isn't a practical reality. Heck, SSDs aren't even fast enough to allow the 2.5:1 5K recording, yet. I assume in a year or two we'll have more options.

I think the media thing is similar. From everything that has been discussed, at considerable length, the problem with third party media remains the inability to constantly test and certify it. The logistics of a program to do that would be quite daunting. From hard drives to CF cards, there has never been a third party "RED-approved" media for the RED ONE. You are right in that RED has said that they, philisophically, would like to be open to third party media solutions but just don't see it happening in the foreseeable future because they see data integrity as crucial, and something for which they will consistently be held responsible.

On the fixed, the widest the lens can be is 7.5mm, which has a FF equivalent of 28mm. Because of the 2/3 sensor, even with the interchangeable, I don't think you're going to find a lens wider than 7.5mm except...

One Red Mini Prime goes wider:
6.5mm T1.9 (24mm FF equivalent)
8mm T1.5
16mm T1.5
25 T1.8
50 T2.9
75 T4

So besides not having as shallow of DOF as S35 or FF35, the bigger issue with 2/3 sensor is the lack of getting ultrawide. But still, a great tool for the majority of scenarios.
There was some chatter over a year ago about a wide-angle adapter???

Thanks, this was very thorough!

I have a 2/3" camera and I've used the Zeiss digiprime 5mm. It's very wide.

Not so much...

We have sent out EPIC data and dummy models to several companies making 3D rigs and UW housings. One company has begun development on a new module. I expect more to follow.

You may have noticed that ET has released a 3D rig made exclusively for EPIC... called ATOM.

Sanjin,

Here is a HUGE PROBLEM with that lens, and I hope this gets read... as far as I can tell it is for a 3-chip sensor, not a single chip like the scarlet. It would also require an expensive prism type adapter.

Be careful.

Gotta run, maybe someone else can fill in details.

glass looks cool otherwise!

"Canon introduces an important innovation in HD production portable lens,
the HJ15ex8.5B KRSE-V. This is specifically intended to extend production
flexibilities in mobile HD shooting of many forms. The lens embodies a
built-in optical image stabilization system based upon Canon’s patented
Vari-Angle Prism Image Stabilizer (VAP-IS) technology. Canon’s IS
technology has been significantly improved over an earlier system deployed
a decade ago in a standard definition lens. Rock solid imagery is ensured
when the lens-camera system is subjected to a wide range of perturbation
frequencies encountered by a camera operator who is shooting handheld
while walking, running, or operating from a motorcycle pillion, within a
moving vehicle, boat, or helicopter."

Jeffrey,

I can't find any spec that zoom lens is build for HD 2/3" 3CCD camcorders only but of course that I could be wrong.

@Joseph - I missed Jim's specific use of the word "module" so I might be misinterpreting completely what seemed to be going on previously. I have always thought of modules for Epic and Scarlet as those electronically integrated units "hanging off" the sides or back of the brain (or each other, when "chained"). The obvious ones are REDmotes, media modules, I/O modules, power modules and the announced h.264 module discussed a long time ago.

Of course, that begs the question of whether an LCD is a "module" or just an "accessory" as there are external monitors that can be attached to a RED ONE, albeit, I believe, only through HDMI or HD-SDI connectors. And are rigs and hardware accessories such as handles and base plates "modules" or not? In the end, perhaps it is all just semantics.

If Jim specifically was referring to electronic modules of this type being develop by third parties - beyond the specific underwater housings and 3D rigs already discussed - the RED world will get very interesting, indeed.

As for media, I think that issue has been pretty thoroughly discussed and, to me, there doesn't seem to be much chance that there will be "approved" third party media choices in the near future.

Terry, I think at one point Jim et al did say that they were going to release specifications that would allow third parties to create modules per your definition - the things you snap together to make a full DSMC system.

I'm sure they will, eventually, although it's obviously going to be done on their time, probably after we have some idea of how their modules work in the field. Just like iPhone didn't come with an app store for the first year, it's plausible and reasonable that RED won't open up their system to module development for about the same amount of time, as they fully refine and develop the system.

So don't expect third party module development immediately, but expect it eventually.

Yup...these would be considered modules...not anything like a monitor...

Though it has been thoroughly discussed, I don't think it's a matter of it falling on RED's shoulders to open up 3rd party media. It's just up to the other manufacturers to "up their game". For the majority of CF card use, people need not rely on much else than the current ones available. So, why would they care to make one fast enough for a RED camera? That's why they force RED's hand to bring in media that will hold up in the long run.

So, if a CF card maker wanted to make an acceptable card, RED wouldn't have any problem accepting.

Yeah, absolutely one of the best questions and worries!!!
I agree with Dalton at all and the answers who you give it to him are absolutely NOT accepted by me,they are NOT solution!!!
My opinion is that battery life it is too short.I would like to be mobile and if I must carry 10kg cases with lenses, the Epic body,I must not carry and batteries and 2 generators...I`ll need to pay a man to carry for me all those things and be my slave...
Not just extremely short battery life is a MINUS.For me,MINUS are all those things:
2.There is no USB 3.0,which is the fastest way to transfer data from body to computer.
3.From power up to record -8 seconds(too, too slow)!
4.Only black color?!Common guys,I am not going to take pictures or video on funeral!!!
In some posts some of you were making a jokes with pink color! And I am asking you-why not?!
I am not gay or bisexual, but honestly,I prefer pink, instead of black.
If the name of company is RED,let`s make it RED,all product red,not just the logo sign!
Also you can make orange one or violet,blue...
Why all companies make only BLACK.Is your life so black or gray?!
I have many other questions, but I`m gonna write new post.

Okay, this went from valid to not so important to not an issue to WTF in record pace.

Theres a switch on the camera for stills and one for video right? So third party isn't fast enough for video what about stills?

Unless thats changed cause obviously RED video is good enough for stills (tons of evidence on this) pulling so probably not need for stills mode. If its still there though, people can have tons of their normal cards used on that and the video part being for special needs.

I'm sure that fits some individuals right?

...

So, if a CF card maker wanted to make an acceptable card, RED wouldn't have any problem accepting.

Sorry to disagree with a RED celeb such as yourself, :001_smile:

but - what I took away from the very, very (VERY!) extensive and thorough discussion of third party media was that the program of testing and certifying third party solutions, and then maintaining and monitoring those certifications, and the consistency of the media products, would be extremely onerous and that it would likely add so much cost to the RED media program itself, that it would be self-defeating. Of course, I could be wrong! And even more obvious, everything is subject to change!

But the question still hangs there - how would RED effectively maintain control over the integrity of third party media when 1) these cameras rely on sustained write speeds that are nearly bleeding edge, and 2) the integrity of the media is so very crucial to the perceived reliability of the RED cameras. Just askin' :001_cool:

Just double checking, the scarlet is the same chassis as the epic correct?

This picture reminds me something... What is the latest price announced for the rear SSD module and the Redvolt module ? (can't find it, I know it's somewhere burried under a lot of threads, I know thaaat)

(I tried to reduced the picture size with the forum's tool but seems I can't so sorry for that)

I could be very wrong. I would LOVE to be able to throw a decent ENG style lens on scarlet! because you are right, it would be AWESOME!

months ago, when first thinking scarlet would be out a year ago, I researched this and generally found that if it didn't say it was a film lens or for red one or single sensor, then it would be for a more mainstream 3-chip ccd camera.

BUT, i could be wrong, because I WANT to be wrong, haha.

Cheers!

Jeff
