  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SALT III- High Speed Lens Shootout "WFO" Results

I asked at RACON on Double Dragon thread 2 Times.
Just simple answer "we can not disclose" would do...
So unless if you are "Raving Fan-Boy" , your tech questions are Ignored ;-(

After a post like this.. I wouldn't expect your questions to ever be answered again.

Thanks guys. Really one of the most useful and thoughtful tests that I have seen in a long time.
Shame about the Cooke's. They should have sent their lenses themselves, the test was that good.

There aren't any around. I have a great relationship with cooke. They cant find me a set to look at. They are so deep in back order, they cant hang onto anything.

I'll see if I can get some 5K .R3D grabs from the Cooke 5/i's. It won't be the same as this test material, but you'll be able to see what they can do.

They don't have a demo set?

Great Job! thanks for taking the time to take on this very informative test. It has helped me move forward with my lens selection and it went the way I was leaning. Thanks to all!!!!!!!

I ordered a zeiss cp.2 super speed 50 mm and waited a month to be told by B and H video that they still had no idea when the lens would be available. Then I read this shoot out. Wow. My lens scored terrible. Canceled order and now at square one. Tempted to just rent. Or play the lotto and buy a zeiss master prime set. Good luck.

There is a new set of lenses coming from Zeiss which are designed for higher pixel counts. Thus much greater resolving power and sharp across the whole field. The first one is a 50/1.4. So save your pennies for the third quarter of 2013.

This was a really enlightening test! (Pardon the pun). If I could make one suggestion though, I wanted to go back in the video and cross reference lenses in the different focal lengths, but it was really hard to figure out what I was looking at. If its not a huge ordeal, maybe you guys could ad on the bottom right of the frame what we are looking at. Example: 35mm wide open, 75/85 at 2.8 and so on, so you know exactly what you are looking at in a glance.
but besides that I really liked to watch the video and see the different characters on the different lenses. I wouldn't say one is better that the other, but they are different tools for different shoots.
For example: master primes are super clean, making beautiful pictures, but if I'm looking for a look with flares, they would be the wrong choice.
but honestly if you purchase any of the sets, you can't really go wrong. You need to know the strengths and weaknesses and you'll know exactly how to work with them.

Great test thanks, especially your observations. As has been said - this is some well needed I for for those looking at lenses. The Leica set were my faves, but will have to look through again for the lenses somewhat closer to any budget I might have in the near future. Thanks again.

How will these compare to Master Primes?

Can't say except to tell you that they will be for the photography and video market rather than the Cinema one. Which means that focus throw and external form may vary from lens to lens. I don't know how many aperture blades they will have. They shouldn't breathe too much as they are also being oriented towards video. The other thing is that beyond the 55mm (my bad to Daniel, it is not a 50mm, but rather a 55mm) we don't know what the lens lineup will be or how long it will take to roll out.

In my opinion they will be on par with the new Leica C lenses in terms of optical quality and even field illumination/sharpness. They will definitely be sharper than most of the lenses we see out there, certainly more so than the majority of lenses shown here wide open.

Hi Phil,

great test. Thank you and the team for the hard work you´ve put into this. Finally people start to notice how beautiful the Illuminas perform. I own a set based in LA and love their look. Feel free to contact me if you want to shoot with them.

Best,
Kay

What a great test Phil...
The Ziess MKII's did not fare as well as I thought they would.. I wonder how they are against the mkIII's....
The Russians lens.. i was keen to look at once more... but those lens flares would become a major problem for most of my effects shoots.
THe Lieca C's were incredible...

Great test !

Really happy that proper information is getting out there about these Illuminas. They performed way better than I was led to believe. In my mind, a very sound value for the quality and build. I'm getting some monies together at the moment for a large gear purchase (hopefully before April). The glass expense is going to be an interesting decision.

This was definitely Will and Matt's baby. They invited me along to break some flashlights and make some observations. The MKII's are bit of a mixed bag in my experience when it comes to flare. You can certainly get that classic flare though with a stronger source. This was a great set though.

Those flares on the Illumina glass cleans up around T1.8/2-ish for most of them.

I'll be doing what I can to secure a set of Summilux-Cs if possible. Between this test and the first footage I shot with the 40mm and 75mm they have left a lasting impression on me. Been sniffing around seeing where they could be had. Working on it. The deep ebbs and flows of the last few weeks has been madness both on a professional and personal level.

Thanks for finding the time and resources to do this guys! Nice music selection as well, made the 45 minutes enjoyable.
