  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

I can only hope that I correct people kindly... that is the intent but often times seeing the same questions several times gets under my skin. It shouldn't. There are way too many threads to read to get everything. We are all customers here. Some are here every day and some casually visit. We need to remember that before harshly posting on someone. I'd prefer everyone has a good experience here and doesn't get chased off because they asked a question that many of us assume they should have seen.

You might need to start a thread for the corrections to people  , it seems the only way to fix the FUD...

We have 6 people on skype talking Scarlet 2/3rd right now... Whats her dynamic range? how much do we lose in DR at the 2/3rd sensor?

There are no stupid questions. The protocol is to search first, then ask. Some people may not know that. Most noobs will apologize in advance for asking questions that have been asked before. That's cool. Covering content that has already been covered does help for cross referencing purposes. That's how these forums work. There will always be noobs and there will always be flame throwers.

Back on topic, can we hope to see R3D footages from the Scarlet 8X before preorders start ?

I second that question and will add : how does the bayer patern affects the Scarlet's resolution ?

If you accept the rule of thumb 70% of pixel resolution from a high quality demosaic Scarlet should still comfortably resolve about 33% higher than the best 1080p cameras. From what has been said here before, I think Red is doing a bit better than 70%.

We are showing 78-80% with Graeme's creative approach.

Thanks Jim.
Sounds really cool.
Scarlet looks really promising !
I can't wait to see some footage.

(hidden question of the day : any chance to see a Red Booth at the Cannes Film Festival ?)

It's in the forum somewhere. I believe they said that an R3D can debayer to about ~80% of the sensor resolution as optically resolvable detail.

So 5K EPIC gets you to about 4K optically, and 3K Scarlet gets you about 2.5K.
In comparison - your average 2K'ish / 1080p camera could get you no more than about 1.5K.

edit... too slow, nevermind.

The fun thing - for us dinosaurs doing a lot of 1080 delivery for 720 screening in a dying broadcast world - will be to compare the 1080 from Scarlet 2/3, Epic 5k and R1MX 4Khd.

For us doing a bit of delivery to cinemas, the same experiment will be relevant for 2k and 4k delivery.

No presumptions here, just looking foreward to see the results as to resolution and DR with the differnt cameras.

Taking off my geeky coat, I just basically look foreward to shoot with each of these cams, for different purposes.

Seems like Graeme posted comparison 4k and 3k zone charts some time back though I don't remember where to find them.
Mark Pederson posted some 720p vimeos of low light shots at 4k and 2k from R1MX last winter. There was a bit of difference in noise/grain, similar to but not as bad as the difference between 35mm and 16mm film. It was slightly coarser, but very similar otherwise at the same exposure settings.

I've shot zonecharts at 4k, 4khd, 3k & 2k as well. Of course not as good as Graemes, but they have been giving mean idea of what to expect... From the R1.

Might sound silly, but for many reasons I expect... different... results from Epic and Scarlet, both as to what they resolve and as to DR.

I might be way off, of course, but that's part of the geeky-fun.

For all the other stuff, Ijust look foreward to using them.

I'd think it's a safe bet to assume the bayer probably affects it the same way it affects R1 and Epic, where ~80% of native resolution = measured resolution.
So if an Epic at 5120 is 4k measured and R1 at 4096 is 3.2k measured, then Scarlet at 3072 *.8 = 2458 or 2.4k measured.
So basically, even after debayer, it kicks the snot out of anything Sony has on offer costing ten times as much.

Edit: should have refreshed before sitting down and responding, lol

I'd really want to see some comparison with some 2/3" HDCAM footage (F23 and the others).
The Scarlet could be a dream camera for students and for personnal projects, even the fixed which would give a great focal lenght package with nice optical qualities and a nice F stops (f/2.8 for a zoom seems awesome when I see that Zeiss Compact Primes are barely f/2). I know that primes have better resolutions, but I trust Red on the fact that the Fixed won't have a cheap lens !

I don't think thats the case, people want the complete R3D files not a file posted of down rezed footage, but proper footage too look at and test with. There are very few who donate footage as such so why will that change. As a EX1R user as present, l will be buying an Epic S and Fixed Scarlet, it would be great to have a few files to play with.

Surely Red can shoot a few street or countryside scenes for us, so we can download them to play around with.

Would you buy a brand new car without a test drive!!!!!

Andrew, truly, with respect,

I have owned 23 Sony cameras since 1990. I was in the first batch of 1000 worldwide orders for the VX-1000, the F-900 and the EX-1. I was the first one to shoot underwater footage with the TRV-900, or so I was told by Sony, and in general, I was well known by a lot of their decision makers and enjoyed what you could call a close relationship with them.

Yet, I was never once provided original footage by Sony for me to ascertain whether I wanted to buy their cameras or not. They released their camera specs, announced a delivery date and, if you were lucky, you could catch some sample footage at NAB or other shows. That was the way it was and still is. If you want to see what a Scarlet looks like, then wait for it to get released and rent one, which is the answer I got from Sony when I told them I was considering buying an F-23, checkbook in my pocket, when they were taking pre-orders.

I think is fair to assume that Scarlet will have enough of the RED DNA in it to look just as good as the RED ONE, and that look and quality, you should be familiar with enough by now. If that's not enough, then your option is not to be a trailblazer and wait for others to shoot and post video samples, which is a safe approach. To me, however, RED does not need to prove itself at all, I'm sure Scarlet will deliver in spades. I extended Sony the courtesy of ordering new cameras, all of which were pioneering new formats, sensors and features, based on their track record with pre-existing products. And given the quality of the RED ONE, which is without a doubt the best digital camera out there nowadays, I am far more willing to extend Scarlet that same courtesy. Far more willing indeed.

I'll be glad to show up anywhere in so cal when someone gets a scarlet. I'll bring my 2/3" camera (viper), and we'll run whatever tests. I've got no problem posting viper frames or footage. As you all know though, 4:4:4 RGB uncompressed files are HUGE. 5 seconds = 1GB. The dpx files are also very large.

I totally agree but I have to point out how spoilt we've become over the past 3 years here. Scarlet as a 3K 150FPS HDR Raw camera has been relegated to students and "personal projects" in quite a few discussions before over here.

I know it can be humbling or intimidating to post in the same discussions as ASC members and people like Bryan Singer but lets not belittle this camera.

It's professional. The only times I can't imagine this camera being ideal is when im shooting in a small space and want background seperation or when I need an effect lens (lensbaby/tilt shift/extreme wide angle [yes, i know wide angle lenses arent effect lenses, just go with it...you know what I'm talking about])

If you can't shoot a great looking movie with a Scarlet an Epic won't help :ihih:

Btw this isn't a reaction to any single person's post, it just seemed like the appropriate place for a reality check/rant :)
