  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPAs...

....and the super shallow focus at wide apertures, then I guess they'll be even happier on the Monstro, though the 1st AC might not be so happy...
Thank god sensitivity increases over time too. Because all this will ask for stopping down to go for a more desirable d.o.f.
Without increased sensitivity our gaffers are the once that won't be happy;) We will all be challenged more....more options that justify having professional crew.

So stoked on the near future RPA's. Not everyone believed they where really comming. Though for me it was a valid reason to wait with buying RPP's. I've every 'half pound' of faith in RED R&D regarding this subject.

David it is so nice to read some of your experience and scientific views again about something important like this.

Kind of a noob question, but I don't want to research this for a long time (because there are lots of smart people here who already know!):

Does Anamorphic require a FF sensor? Seems like it has been on plenty of NON full frame sensor cameras before, so maybe they just have a different "stretch" ratio in the algorithm?

I guess what I am getting at is why would we wan't the development of a 1.33:1 sensor? Or even Full Frame which is 1.5:1 when every concievable project will be 1.85:1 or wider?

Now I know ideas and options are boundless, don't say "we need every possible sensor size and shape imaginable... bring on the triangle!" because we all know unusual ratios will have to be grabbed from the most prominent ones.

So maybe someone knows why we would want a less wide format sensor?

The thing would be that if they made them, the current RPPs won't capture on a Fullframe from what I heard, given maybe what I heard was wrong, developed RPA for a FF means that if you bought them say now, they translate all the way till RED get to a FF sensor...

I don't think anyone is saying that it requires a FF sensor, I could be wrong,

Anyone else want to pitch in on that?

Shame if they killed the development but there are 2 surprises on that timetable but it looks like it comes after Monstro...wish there were some between REDRay and Dragon...I always loved REDs goodie announcements

If the RPAs are indeed one of the 2 surprises on the roadmap list, I'd say they're still about 2-4 years away considering how "long" that roadmap list is. Think of the time that passed just in between Epic-M and Epic-X... 4-5 months?

It seems silly to even speculate if they're that far out.

:zombie_smiley: zooombiieee threaaaaaad...

Tonight we are announcing the development of the RPAs (RED Pro Anamorphics). They will match color, optical quality and mechanical performance characteristics with their little brothers... the RPPs. The weight of the RPAs is expected to be within 1/2 pound of the RPPs.

Initial set will consist of:

35mm T2.4
50mm T2.4
85mm T2.4
100mm T2.4

A 25mm T2.4 is also being studied.

Delivery of the 4 lens set is expected by year's end... although you know the schedule drill.

Prices will be slightly higher than RPPs.

Jim

WOW! didnt see that coming...

Are you thinking about making some F1.2 or F1.3 super-speeds... within small light weight housings.
If so. I would buy a couple of sets up front. :) site unseen..
I trust and believe your glass quality standards are as hi as mine... as I have seen with the RPPs.

Last thread activity (before today) 12-08-2010

All has been quiet on the RPA front (LOL) since then...

Jim's a glass man...I'm sure there are protos out there in his own kit. Though I bet specs have changed as they decide on what the Monstro sensor will be.

I would guess the RPA's are what the Epic is to the R1 -they learned a lot in making those and will be undoubtedly better than the RPP's (which are still fine pieces of glass in themselves).

No point in making something that will have a limited life, right JJ?

I think you'll like what is going to come out of the oven given the chefs involved in making the cake.

oh my....

I thought this was a newby.

Lets consider this a long forgotten urban Myth... :))

I got excited too - then realised it was the old thread 'reborn' LOL.

Guess Ill be sticking with my Ana Lomos... for now :)

Yes...old Lomo looks good on Epic (small and lightweight). Good start point for RPA design...

These announcements are amazing ... It's like a marathon, like that time I got a noise complaint because my the ........... I was having with my ......... was too loud. So, I .... And then they moved out 5days later. I hope Mr. Land and Mr. Jannard don't stop creating.

How did this thread come back to life, was there some new info I missed. I am still very curious about this glass but I imagine RED has their hands full with Scarlet/EPIC...would be great if they were designed to be compact but when you go Anamorphic you kind of need the "Go big or go home" attitude.... specially when combined with an EPIC. Never seen the lomo epic combo but we have HAWK anamorphic glass available here in the city and the results are stunning!

Clayton, you didn't miss a thing. There's been nothing new announced on the RPA front. Someone discovered this old thread and simply didn't notice the dates. It's a common problem on Internet forums. Many of us would still love for RED to develop these, but I think everyone has learned that holding one's breath waiting for any particular category of announcement is hazardous to one's health!

Yeah we are sure looking forward to the upcoming RPA's but the Hawk's are fantastic glass, and seriously considering the redesigned, sharper,
lighter, and better marked Hawk V-Plus Series, for our Film, if we don't go 3D... ;)

Hi Brandon
Sure...I will post some jpg's here and drop some r3d for any interested (I must find good place in the net).
I saw (and work with) some footage from Hawk (commercial on 35mm...not on RED) and these lenses are flare proof and almost no breathe, so I can feel anamorphic only in shape of bokeh and anamorphic specific deep of field.
For my taste Hawk make too perfect lenses. I love anamorphic for anamorphic looks like lens flare, breathe, strange out of focus area (top and bottom) like in first Alien or in Bladerunner or old Solaris (Tarkovski Jusov and Lomo :))
