Hi Guys,

my Rokinon Cine Primes arrived today and I thought I ll post a quick first impression of those lenses.

I got:

14mm T3.1
24mm T1.5
35mm T1.5
85mm T1.5

not exactly my ideal choice, instead of the 35mm I rather would have had a 50mm but ok.

After having a first play with them this afternoon I have to say these lenses are really well built. The aperture and focus rings move very smooth and with a nice resistance. The markings are very bright and clear to read, even though a little small. The lenses have more weight to them than what appears on first sight, especially because they are quite small compared to other lenses.

Unfortunately the weather has been horrible today so I only had a couple of minutes between thunderstorms and torrential rain to run across the road and set up this unfortunately, not very impressive shot, but I hope it is enough to get a first idea. Better footage will follow on the weekend (yes that means Bikini Girls & Skintones ^^).

Everything was shot in 5K - 4:1 at 1/50 shutter, the images are straight out of the camera and completely unaltered apart from RedcinX Tiff -> JPeg conversion, there are R3D downloads for each shot as well:

My cat Anakin shot on the 35mm indoors at around T5.6

Here is a comparison of what the biggest lens in the kit (35mm) looks like next to the 24-70mm F2.8 Canon:

The only real negative thing I can mention so far are the friggin lens hoods, they are extremely fiddly and dont fit very nice.

When it comes to value for money, I dont think one can go wrong with these lenses. They seem soft on the wide end but considering a whole kit of those is less than a single Cp2, once stopped to around 2.5 they give very nice results.

How is the breathing for you? What about distortion on the 14mm?

My favorite is the 85mm, that's really impressive for portrait, even WO.

hey Uli, exil deutscher hier :p

the breathing is noticeable when you pull focus but its not something that really bothers me to be honest. from what I've noticed so far the 14mm has a few distortion issues around the edges.

Thanks for your test Dominik!

Is it so that the 24 has a little pink shift? Or is it a flair that makes it pink?

Do you remember what filtration did you use? NDs?
What T stop?

It looks soft to me but it's like what I'm used to with the Rokinons. (I have 3 of them)

Photoshop composite with the same RCX settings applied with the 14/24/35/85mm. Color saturation exagerated to see the diffenrence. (hope the filtration was the same)

Patrick: I was wondering about that pink blotch too, i think in this case it might have been the light, but i ll keep an eye on that on the weekend when I do more shooting. There were no filters used at all and F stop was around f16.

wow thanks for that, yes the same throughout on all lenses.

Thanks Dominic - Like your quick test - Love the shot of the cat - dont think its soft at all. Would have fooled me if you told me you shot that on a cp.2

I have the 24, 35 and 85mm (you have 95 in your list, got me excited but I figured it was a typo).

Great to see working with these Dominic.

Big fan of your work :)

Im on the fence with the 14mm and there is the new 16mm coming soon.

Yes a 50mm would top it off or maybe that and above and beyond 150mm :)

Looking forward to your future frames.

Very inspiring.

:cheers2:

I'll offer a beer to the one who finds the spot where the serial number of the Rokinon cine lens is written...

The biggest problem with those "cinevised" lenses is still their extremely short focus rotation... rokinon would have a big winner if they would just give them a bigger focus throw so we can pull focus more precisely.

the new 16 is for MFT, not FF

i just got the 85 and 35 and am very pleasantly surprised...i did not expect them to be THAT good.....especially the 85 blows my mind....and it is the cheapest of the bunch....
might have to get the 24 now as well....

i am leaning towards the nikon 50 1.2...i think the character would work with the rokinons....

and yes, the lens caps and hoods are really cheap, but i am glad they saved costs where it really does not matter that much.....

Oh thanks. Oh well I honestly need something in the lines of 50 and 150/200 plus anyway :)

When I first tested my 85mm I was spoiled by the 35mm.

However after a few months, I cant put the 85mm down :)

I love the feel of it.

Strange that it was 72mm and not 77mm (in size).

btw...amazon has a 24, 35, 85 package deal for 1500....that is another 150 off...too bad i already bought the 35 and 85....

Has anyone used these lenses with an FF?

I havent had a chance (since I dont own one yet) to try one.
