  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What were your NAB discoveries? (Please, no Red comments here.)

I'm already back from NAB. I was going to be there two days and cut it to one very long day. Here are my thoughts/discoveries.

Angenieux did in fact come out with a new lens--a 45-120 Optima standard (non-digital) @ $45,000mol. My source confirmed that this was not the lens he told me about. Angenieux, too, is having Japan sourcing problems. Look for a larger lens hopefully by Cinegear.

Fuginon. Busy booth. I can't understand why send a staff to the US who doesn't speak English. I was trying to get confirmation as to whether or not lens covered only 35, S35, 5K or what. Concept went way over their heads. Finally found a manager who confirmed that it is listed as S35. MY NYC contact says sales have been terrible. I was trying to get an idea as to why. (Other than price.)

Kessler Crane. Looks OK for budget oriented folks. Payload is only 20 lbs, so maybe an Epic set up and lens. As to the motor, a bit too much play for me. The lag time is a hair too soft to my liking. But price is right.

Dana Dolly. Couple of you guys wanted to see this booth. You've go to be kidding! If you want to impress your high school honey, this rig is for you. Big. Bold, no breaking and cheap. I'd be embarrased to be seen even close to this thing.

On a more positive note, consider: DC Slider. This rig was recommended by a Reduser several months ago. It's a combo slider/jib. Nice You Tube video. Impressed me. This unit is made in Poland of all places. Now exclusively distributed by Matthews. Price: $7,500. SHOW SPECIAL: $6,000. This unit has a payload of 25lbs, but Matthews says this is conservative. They've put a 50 lb unit on it with no problems. Unit is very smooth, very stable, has a motor accessory. Price includes several accessories plus case. NO. YOU CAN'T GET IT CHEAPER AT B&H, or so Matthews told me.

Zaxcom's new Nomad looks interesting. Comes in 4 to 12 lines, $3,500 to $6,500 with more bells and whistles than you may ever need (or figure out). They're following in the steps of Fuginon. Why have sales people who's idea of informtion is to listen to a pre-recored tape. Apparently only one sales person on site who takes real questions. Delivery in 2-4 months.

I like Cartoni. Their new Maxima head is my kind of product. It works well, goes from a payload of 0 to 86 pounds all in one unit, looks great. So this will take your Canon up to your RedOne decked out with an Angenieux 24-290, batteries, monitor and sound attachments with room for more.

Cartoni has finally come up with track wheels for their dollies. I have their two dolly systems and like both. This will give those who like the control of track a higher comfort zone.

Cmotion has a new product; Camin line. Instead of one or three lines, it now goes two and four (or 8 for 3D use). They now have a partnership with ARRI. No more Hardin motors. ARRI is now their motor of choice.

I'm not a big post guy, so I didn't spend much time in the South Building. Must say that the AJA, Blackmagic and other booths were very impressive. That's what happens when you have wide profit margins.

So let's hear from you. What info do you have to share? PLEASE. No Red comments in this thread

Adobe announced CS5.5. For Prem users they have incorporated Epic support and 2 system sound functionality. They were showing a MBP using the Thunderbolt connection for playback. Pretty cool.

arri/fujion 18-80 is perfect for epic, we tested in my lens test back in february...look at the lens chart we made...thanks for the update, holed up in NYC, cant get to NAB.

DeVinci continues to impress. New version upcoming.
Reasonably priced moco from Cineslider.
Their may be plenty of news tomorrow night with the FCPUG meeting. New FCP anticipated.

I got to play with Arri's L series LED fresnel's today, and was very impressed, not shipping yet but are absolutely on the "will buy" list for next year, also have been impressed with BMD's progress on Resolve since it shipped, and the 8.0 upgrade is free to current owners.

Will be adding the new TV logic 7" monitor for our AC, and am pretty frustrated with Avid's attitude. So why no output from media composer from either AJA, or BMD's high end cards, "Avid is important enough that you need to dedicate a machine", uhm, no.

I got access to some pre-production thunderbolt arrays, and was a little underwhelmed by the throughput, best I saw was under 600 MBs.

Promise will be the first to ship a TB solution.

Finally got to meet with Jeff Kilgroe‎ F2F, no surprise, smart guy, nice guy.

more later,

Steve

Steve, I forgot about ARRI's new LED lights. $2,700 each mol. They didn't have specs on candle power when I asked to see the charts: lights still in development I was told.

There are multiple Arri L's. Passive and active versions. Active is ~14lb and passive ~24lb. Then they have daylight, tungsten, and adjustable. The adjustable color temp version has 10-20% lower light output. Est price is $2700-$3000 depending on fixed or adjustable color temp. Set release is around October. Here is the website http://www.arri.de/l-series/ CRI is above 90.

I really liked the new Kessler moco system. It's like a mini CAMBlock. Est release is summer.

Here's an interesting addition to my list: Zeiss: working on a collaboration with ARRI on a new anamorphic lens that will be for rental only.

MYT Works slider. Nicely designed and built.
blackmagic hyperdeck shuttle uncompressed recorder. - unreal price. ( around $350 i think) although I'll probably buy a kipro mini or a sound devices.
so many led lights it's hard to pick a favorite. High end I would say Creamsourse sold by abel and lower end fotodiox had some interesting led lights. Not on their website yet but they had a led lamp that looked about the size of a 2x4 kino and was really high output and also a nice led ringlight.
I was also looking for a new battery system for the red and am gravitating towards the bebobs.
although I didn't see the new small hd viewfinder, I'm sure it kicks ass just like the dp6 monitor.
In software I liked gamma and density's "image control" for the ipad.

Dana Dolly

Tim, I found your comments on the Dana Dolly trite, self aggrandizing, and pompous. I am sorry you did not like the Dana Dolly, however I would urge people to actually try the dolly before making any dolly choice. We have tried hard to make an affordable, workable solution that will pay for itself rather than become a constant drain on the user's budget. We have many, many happy customers who use the dolly with their Red cameras. I understand it is not for everyone.

Sincerely,

Mike Hall

I discovered (though it's been out for awhile apparently) the Phantom 65. Medium-format sized sensor, 4K resolution, uncompressed 14-bit, 150fps burst to a 32GB RAM buffer, up to 100fps continuous to a 512GB solid state magazine (that's 29 *minutes* of continuous recording at 24fps). Where have you been hiding?!?

The only thing the Phantom 65 doesn't have is (a) more latitude and (b) higher resolution. I've been waiting for the RED Monstro 645 (and indeed, that's why I'm hopping on the Epic train so I can get early access to the Mostro 645 when it does ship), but it looks like the Phantom 65 will more than meet my needs until then. Not cheap at $140K (or $9K/week rental), but the image quality just blew me away, and I've been waiting for the MF sensor size for my motion fashion photography work. For that, the Phantom 65 delivers and more. I do studio work almost exclusively, so the 11 stops the Phantom 65 has now is perfectly reasonable.

Oh, and Leica S2 glass should cover* the Phantom 65. Need I say more? :-)

*In 2.4:1 ratio, the image diagonal on the Phantom 65 is 55.49mm and the S2 image sensor diagonal is 54.08mm. There may be some blurriness/falloff in that last 0.7mm (unlikely though); I'm testing soon to find out and will report back.

I have yet to actually test them. But I was impressed that GoPro had apparently created a synced stereo camera side by side rig. If they have truly managed to snyc them, it would be a great option for some tight stereo work where bigger rigs won't fit.

The Sony OLED monitors were very impressive, I may have to get the 17" pvm version. and the go pro 3d setup was really fun, I had to walk away before I bought one. and blackmagic releasing a free version of resolve in July is pretty big news. MX color panel integration in resolve was a big announcement for me too.

Kessler motors have zero lag unless you chose damping to be non-zero in the Oracle (controller) settings. We use our Red One with all their kit with no negative issues. 20lbs is very, very conservative. I find 'looks Ok for budget oriented folks" to be mindless snobbery. Just because it doesn't cost much doesn't mean it doesn't work, and we have used their cranes on $100 000 30 second spots with our Red MX.

My new EPIC RC Ferrari style Chopper, really super Bad A^#@ specs on this thing, Epic M8 did not want to come out of there... ;)

Ketch, who makes the chopper? You've upstaged the name on the side.

I found Angenieux V3D system to be extremely interesting and though I am no stereographer, I thought that the 3D footage coming from that was a superb experience as a viewer as there was hardly any strain on the eyes and yet the image had a lot of depth to it and the background wasn't flat like I've seen every now and then. It took me awhile to understand what it is that the V3D system does and how it works, but I think I've got it down.

Anyone else check that out?

Who cares what a dolly looks like, as long as it works. Function is all that matters.
