Is anyone else curious why Red doesn't want to provide even rough estimates on when our Scarlet's and Accessories will be ready? It's a little unnerving to have put down the deposit within 14 hours of it going on sale, and not knowing if I will be receiving it in December, January, or even Q1 of 2012. There is no time-frame at all. They must know how many are ordered, and what their production capacity is right? What are the variables preventing them from giving even broad estimates?

Maybe I'm just not used to how companies in the film industry operate - is this typical?

Nope! It's not typical, it is quite RED. If you have not been with us from the beginning then it may be hard to understand.

In the beginning........... RED did give out dates and when there were unexpected delays, some folks raked them over the coals and called them liars. What you are experiencing is Jim and Jarred avoiding having to deal with every little complaint from every little person who doesn't quite understand how this all works.

So, the best we veterans of the REDvolution can tell you is that some patience will be rewarded with incredibly delightful toys. Hopefully for Christmas, but if not, still well worth the wait.

Hang on and try to enjoy the ride that is "RED"!.

EDIT: Heh, Heh, Martin beat me to it while I was typing!

Well, knowing that you will be receiving something in 4-6 weeks pending no supply disruptions would even be great. I just can't imagine Red not telling their more major customers when they can expect their Epics.

Both James Cameron and Peter Jackson ordered multiple EPIC-M's, not X's... the custom handcrafting is more much more expensive, but also apparently easier for RED to schedule for production (due to less extreme demand??)

If you truly want your EPIC right away, order an EPIC-M today-only $58,000-and it's in stock!

;)

Maybe we can just call Peter Jackson directly and ask him to drop by and pick up our reds for us. lol

It would be nice for a timeline but with a hand built camera like red it is understandable that things happen and delays arise. Red seams to have a high quality of control so when they outsource materials if they are not happy with them then a delay is there, but knowing that we are getting the best that red has to offer a wait is well worth it.

No one on the planet can supply a better camera, welcome to family Red, Your buying in to the future. Have faith and patience, you will be very pleased with the camera when you have it.

Im with you and it sucks. I've turned down/lost 3 jobs now, they wanted RED and I only have a 7D right now. Renting is hard to come by when there is only one RED in my area. And its booked all the time. Sucks. Im sure RED knows that we can loose out on work, and I HOPE they know thats less RED accessories that I can buy. :ihih:

Curious what the client ended up doing if there is only one Red in town?

Bob

I don't think you should ever plan, tentatively plan, or think about planning for work with a pre-ordered anything prior to it's arrival.

If you look at the spreadsheet, there is still quite a few "300" event Canon mount cams that need to be allocated. I won't be actually bummed unless it is late March before mine is shipped (SO 1121)

It's difficult, but we have to be patient. Red's doing their best and Scarlet X is a brand new product that they manufacture and sell themselves. This isn't exactly like picking up a video camera at B&H from a more consumer-minded company.

I am in the same boat though. I have a shoot on Sunday, but we're renting. I have a few other shoots prior to the holiday and we'll see what happens. I secured the rental Epic on Monday of this week to "play it safe". My kit rental for my own gear is going towards the actual rental gear in this case.

Reputation and quality of my work are worth a bunch to my clients. They shouldn't have to worry about what goes on behind the green curtain. Just that the imagery will happen no matter what.

If you placed your order in fairly early, Red themselves have make a goal of February of taking care of most "backorders". They are continuously ramping up in scale and staffing. Again, they are doing their best.

Patience. (I'm reminding myself of that idea every 15 minutes)

See, and I would have thought their increased production on December 1st which they said would let them get out of back-order would mean that a 2012 date for those who ordered November 3rd and 4th would be unthinkable.

Yeah... and they are doing a great job in terms of development and production imo. My only issue is their lack of transparency. I know they may loose some orders if they revealed that many Scarlet-X's wouldn't make it out until Q2 2012, but still..

Oh well, they have the best and brightest people at work, and i still can have absolutely no idea when to get my package because people bitched when planned delivery dates slipped..
Now people try to get themselfs lists and tables to find out where they stand on pure speculation.. how is that any better?

I dropped hoping for mine in this year because i dont live near red and happend to be able to be a part of the '300'.. so no business opportunities because it could be janurary, march, june, whatever.. nothing to base any plans, because there is just 0 infos to get

Talking about transparency with RED ?
They are the most transparent company I have ever seen !
And they already got trouble for that. Just a little patience my friend.
And never, never ever take a job counting on something it's not there yet.
